N2O makes me feel like I'm on the edge of truth, and then ejected from the pilot's seat. "Do not pass go, do not collect $200."
I hope William's lips were blue and his eyes were glazed over, with just the tiniest bit of white spittle forming at the edge of his mouth.

I actually met this saddhu. He was in Pushkar, Rajasthan. I found him meditating in the market, sitting atop some concrete platform with a little roof on it. Incense was burning and he was covered in ash. I walked up close just to observe him. Within a minute, he opened his eyes and stared at me. I expected some interesting encounter, but all he did was ask me for a cigarette in perfect English.

I read this book, titled "Chaos and Fractals: New Frontiers of Science" but it contained more mathematics than theoretical discussion. As I'm more verbally inclined (i.e. dependent) towards linguistic abstracts, I wasn't able to connect with the math. It's funny you mention Mandelbrots though, because I read that book whenever I was in Rajasthan.
I really liked McKenna's socio-cultural interpretation of fractals. He extrapolated fractals in nature, such as the pattern of leaf growth, the structure of a snail, etc. and applied it to human development; arguing that individual peak experiences such as orgasms and altered states were indication that a greater denouement, or crescendo of sorts, was awaiting us on a larger scale.
Whether or not his analysis is accurate, the perception of "self-similarity across scale" is true not just of witnessing the human mind in mathematics (itself being both an invention of the mind and the mechanism of nature - testimony to the 'as above so below' spiel), but also witnessing ourselves in the water, in the ground, in the face of someone else. Outside and inside, it's all part of the same ride.
Hofmann's Potion, the documentary about the modern psychedelic founders, focused heavily on the ability that LSD has to make external events seem internally oriented. It's this effect among others that makes it so frightening for some people.

Yeah, It's very interesting. I mention it because it's recursive. The result gets fed back into the formula and you get most complex patterns that seem to have endless amount of varieties, but the characteristics repeat again and again on different scales. This is closest thing to the world we see around us and it's just as simple as e = mc2
you're invited to watch 'The colours of infinity' docu on this topic.
