Painting seems clumsy.

I tried to paint a little bit but it just didn't feel right. I always feel like I'm globbing it too much, like I never have a small enough amount of paint on the brush or something. I like to be able to cram a lot of detail into a small space so I tend to make art with pencils/colored pencils. I like the control I have with a fine point on a pencil. I feel that to get the level of detail I would want with paint I would need to make HUGE paintings, whereas with pencils I can get that detail on a much smaller scale.
Can anybody else relate to this? Are there any colored pencils artists?

I'm not the best at drawing. I recently started trying my hand at oil paints, but I can totally see what you mean.
What type of paints were you using? I don't know much about acrylic paint but with an oil-based painting a lot of detail can be achieved by layering the oils. The level of detail is limitless in the sense that it only stops when you get tired of the painting, ha ha.
Maybe you have to start thinking in a different way, to achieve the level of detail you want, similar to your pencil drawings?

Sounds like you're not using the proper brush for the detailed parts of your painting. Use one like this and you will get lines as fine or finer than pencil.

Adapt! It' not hard. Creativity can be applied to any medium. Besides, all things in moderation as it does not hurt to jump around from time to time. Especially with art I feel like each method takes practice but you won't know which one is fitting to you till you have been on both sides of each process.
Throughout my last few years I have exclusively been a detail person myself and love pencil work but I'm having a blast learning more crude watercolor work. It's a challenge and opportunity.
