A pentagon with five limbs is considered life.

..and if wikipedia is to be believed, there are over 1800 variations of this pentagon with 5 limbs crawling around out there somewhere.  Possibly many more than that at pressures so deep we can't easily explore them fully yet.

What is the basis for the idea that a pentagon represents life?  What represents death?

i think life can be described as anything that experiences life.
UIf you watch some of the vids on the TED website you'll see theyve even designed single cell organisms that seem to have social lives, its very interesting in fact, they eat oil... it was weird though I watched it when drunk the microscopic video was highly entertaining along with the dialogue.

I know for you it might not be life, but inside there is something that experiences and processes responses, so ya...

don't u think its alive? lol... I mean it might not be very interesting life but if its all you got then maybe rock surfaces may be very interesting in way of sensory experience...

With all due respect, I think we already have a definition for life. These creatures fit that definition BTW.

PS, the concept of 'interesting' wouldn't arise without a thinking brain. Its hard to imagine a subjective experience on that level, not that it is unlikely, but I think when we think subjectively, we throw in a whole bunch of concepts, imagery, emotions, etc which just would not exist without the brain.

I consider what I put in the OP as life too.  It must have been the wording that made some of you think otherwise.  I just found that particular pic a fun one to add to the thread for the sake of discussion or flaming or otherwise.

I think it was your choice of wording combined with choice of forum. It was as if you were inviting debate over whether this is life or something.

WHO KNOWS!!... In this day and age

my bad must have misinterpreted it...

so even if it does a brain then I'm talking about that part that responds to stimuli... it must experience in some way the stimuli in order to respond.
