Central Market

Got one in your area? It's owned by HEB. High end super market. Unless you're raking in leaf piles of cash you probably don't want to make a habit of going there -- but damn, it's pretty mind blowing.

They have rare and exotic mushrooms (some of which go for $35 a pound), Kobe beef (no bullshit; $45 a pound), and loads of other stuff you wouldn't normally see at your average, local grocery store. Prime beef, smoked scallops, stuffed quails, whole dungeness crabs (the whole crab, not just the legs)...you name it.

Check it out. It blows Whole Foods out of the water IMO.

Oh and it's also the first place that I've seen sell ghost chili's (supposedly the hottest pepper on Earth).

You must be in one of 4 major cities in Texas. Central Market is one of the best and it's much better than Whole Foods. I've found its often cheaper than a regular HEB grocery store except for meat and seafood. The quality of the produce is extremely high and some of the higher end restaurants here buy almost all of their produce from CM. My only major complaint is quality and prices of some of the mushrooms they try to sell.

Did you pick up any white or black truffles at ~$250/lb?

Yep, I'm in Houston. I saw some small boxes of truffles that were going for like $40, and there was (IIRC) just 2-3 small truffles within the container.

So what the hell is a "chicken mushroom"? They were going for 39.99 a pound.

Very important that you list the whole name. I think you mean "fried-chicken mushroom" which is Lyophyllum decastes. I haven't ever seen chicken of the woods Laetiporus sulphureus there.

The Houston store is one of the best ones. The flagship store in Austin on N. Lamar is a huge let down comparatively, but they do have a few things Houston doesn't get.

All I recall seeing was a small sign that said "chicken mushrooms". I almost got some -- because I was like fuck man, at that price these fuckers must be among the best mushrooms on earth (outside of cubes of course  ).

Couldn't do it, though. I mean ounce for ounce they were almost the same price as freaking Wagyu beef.

sounds like Mitsuwa market in NJ. It's a japanese supermarket that sells kobe beef, live fish and fresh matsutake mushrooms.

I also buy a case of toothbrushes there, the japanese make the best toothbrushes.

Whole foods is a national chain owned by a multinational conglomerate, don't be fooled by there wholesome image, many of there produce isn't local and you can buy much of what they sell in the international isles in other markets for much cheaper.

Hey, I went to the Rogue session hosted by Jose Andres last week.  Pretty fun overall, I never knew that restaurant even existed until I randomly took a strange path to Sundevich.  Also the cocktails by the guy from Passenger / Columbia Room were amazing

Yeah, very true.

But the one thing they do well is Beer selection.  In Cali, you can go to Whole Foods and find GREAT obscure beers for very reasonable prices.

At the Whole Foods I go to you can find fucking Pliney the Elder for $4 a bottle.  They also occasionally have Russian River Supplication, another rediculously hard beer to find.

Maybe Central Market is just a popular name for bitchin grocery stores.  There are a few with that name in Seattle that I went to fairly often.

Im sure it was nothing new. Rehashed El Bulli.

though Rogue is a place I've been meaning to check out, doesn't seem to be getting a lot of press in the DC area, RJ cooper is a good chef, but food and layout of menu are not realistic for DC I don't see it staying open for long.

DC is not a food city, despite what others may tell you.

Probably correct but the closest Ill ever come to El Bulli is jose andres, also Ive never had his food before.  It was 12 of his and 12 of Coopers dishes.  Honestly I thought the food was better overall than eleven madison park though what do I know.  Maybe not as good as Brooklyn Fare though, once again Im no expert however

How was it? Their meat/seafood deli is off the hook. I love all of the different marinades and shit. I got a friend coming to town tomorrow for the weekend, and we're hitting CM as soon as he rolls in. Gonna get the fridge stocked and then party all fucking weekend. Dosing shrooms tomorrow, baby.

Awesome.  I made this http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2009/10/bronzed-sea-bass-with-lemon-shallot-butter/.  Just substituted the sea bass with halibut.
