Ovoid season in ohio

with one of, if not the warmest winter in ohio history, we may have any early onslaught of ovoids, which may lead to a longer and more prolifiration of fruitings and flushes. ultimately idk, but i am anticipating a good spring.

well, as you guys may or may not know, I found the first ovoids the last few years in a row. I am also the furthest west, and probably the furthest south to have found them definatively(someone in Missouri found something real close to ovoids last fall, but there were few pics and no prints made) so watch me! last year was a terrible year for me due to a flood right at the worst time, so I'm hopeful for this year as well. 2 years ago we had a real mild winter, and my ovoid picks have a date of March 3(first find) to april 20(last find) so lets hope for those March Ovoids

I think I got something in the mail from him.
I am kind of slow with my mail though. And its not all in one place.
8 people who sent me samples last year can look forward to ITS1 sequences of their finds. Results will be back in 4 days.

awesome! I'm actually really interested because I never find anything in the fall(ovoids wise) and was interested in finding out whether they were fall ovoids, or P. subaeruginescens(which I can't tell apart, other than the season) or something totally new that grows in a bleak(in terms of active mushrooms) area

last year, i found my first ovoids in May and didnt find any more after. June became hot very quickly and the patches dried up. But I did read stories about others in the same area that found them into the latter half of June. Its all about the rains, floods, and humidity!

I sequenced 3 collections of "subaeruginascens from San Francisco and one collection from Ohio, and the ITS1 region is identical. I am coauthoring a paper that will be submitted in a couple weeks that will officially expand the known range of ovoidecystidiata to the states that it is now known to exist.
The relevant paragraph is:
Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata was recently described from the Eastern USA (Guzmán et al. 2007). Despite being uncommon, it is widespread on the west coast of the USA; for many years, these collections were incorrectly going under the name P. subaeruginascens or P. stuntzii. Finds from Washington (Seattle), Oregon (Portland) and California (San Francisco and Redwood City) have been noted by the authors. The known range in the east has also expanded: this species has also been found in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Rhode Island, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Virginia. On the West Coast, this species may grow in the same habitats as P. cyanofriscosa and allies but can be easily distinguished by the occurrence of a membraneous annulus and microscopically by its subrhomboid spores.
Did I miss any locations that ovoids have been found?

Yes, they have been found in Europe recently.

I bet they can be found everywhere in the damp valleys of the Appalachian Mountains from Maine down to northern Georgia.

The fall oviod season in the O valley was very generous. Had finds clear up to December. Had to pull the reigns back to ensure there well being...

nice! i live on the very fringe of the ovoid northern zones/areas, so the season here is shorter, thus lower quantities for the year. though, when its good, its very good.

The easter lilies are flowering, and people in Alabama are finding morels. I find ovoids and morels at the same time, and best I can tell, 2-3 weeks for me

It is supposed to be 65 tomorrow, I just began mushroom hunting may of last year and so far I found every species of gymnopilus that was listed in Ohio and some that weren’t listed so my goal this year is to find some ovoids,

How do you know which species of Gymnopilus are known from Ohio? And how did you ID the ones you found?

Get a big bag of fresh wood chips in May and dump it on your best ovoid spot and mix it in with the soil and stuff the ovoids are fruiting in and there's a good chance you'll get fall ovoids.
