River of drugs and booze in Laos

Travellers relax and enjoy a drink before inner-tubing down a Laos river
IT'S a laidback lifestyle attracting adventurous Aussies, but it can be lethal.
The Department of Foreign Affairs estimates about 30,000 Australians visit Laos each year and the death of three in a month has put the South-East Asian nation in the headlines.
One recently returned Melburnian, who didn't want to be named, said Aussies loved Laos because drugs were plentiful and cheap, and booze came in buckets at tubing town Vang Vieng.
Tubing, in the Laotian sense, means floating down a river in a tyre tube, going from bar to bar.
Public servant Debbie Young said she and her husband weren't out to party when they went to Laos as part of their recent honeymoon, but plenty of others were.
"Vang Vieng is like Thailand is, just pretty much bars, places you can get food and Aussies," said Mrs Young, 34.
"There were groups of people there at two or three in the afternoon who were absolutely slaughtered. (Others) said they were on acid and smoking opium."
Monash University student Ben Pollard, who returned from a five-week trip to Laos, Thailand and Cambodia last Saturday, said the death of Sydney man Lee Hudswell a few days beforehand didn't put him and girlfriend Holly off tubing.
"People we'd spoken to in guesthouses were saying if you're sensible and you don't get s...-faced you're going to be fine," said Mr Pollard, 24.
"A lot of menu signboards in the street had happy this and happy that, meaning the food had marijuana in it."
Intrepid Travel managing director Geoff Manchester said 200-300 travellers went to Laos in 1993 when the company started tours there.
They took 1500 Australians last year.
"I think most younger people who have got friends who are backpackers would know someone who has been," Mr Manchester said.
"It is a pretty amazing country to see because it's very different from the rest of Asia in that it's only got a small population, nearly the whole country is mountainous and it's much less developed than the other ones."
Travel to Laos has the lowest DFAT travel warning, encouraging Aussies to exercise normal safety precautions.

I got to see how much a plane ticket costs. This looks like Thailand used to be...a real shithole with tons of drugs legal and cheap, and hot asian bitches ready to fuck at the drop of a hat for a few bucks...
By the way, they have a LOT of cheap heroin there, for the junkies.

Travelocity found this flight on Cathay Pacific Airways that departs at 12:05 AM from San Francisco, CA (SFO), arrives at: 9:05 PM in Vientiane, Laos (VTE), and stops in Hong Kong and Bangkok.
There is also a flight on US Airways which leaves at 1:50 PM from San Francisco, CA (SFO)
and arrives at 2:00 PM Vientiane, Laos (VTE), with stops in Beijing and Kunming, for $9551.80.
There is also a flight from SF to Bangkok for $1152.80, then you could take a bus for 350 miles to Laos.
Perhaps other people can find better prices. Travelocity and the other major airline search engines do not index the airlines with the best fares.

the lowest i found was a 2 stop china airlines, 1482. fuck.
la to guangzhou china, 753.... and i know a lot of girls in china i can fuck and stay with. hmmm....hard choice. And if i stay in a hotel in china, its gonna be more expensive, probably food too....

Drugs are a large problem in Laos and should be avoided at all costs. Lao law makes little distinction between personal use and trafficking and any conviction will result in heavy fines and expulsion at best and imprisonment or even execution at worst. Methamphetamine is widespread and often offered in "special" or "happy" shakes along the backpacker trail.

That sounds shitty to me. I would like to go to Laos, don't get me wrong, but Im sure I can get better quality drugs here. I could also get a wider variety of drugs than I could there. Who would want to hang out and get stoned with a bunch of high people from their own country when they are visiting a foreign country? Probably rich annoying people. The blonde bitches in the pic are hot but probably annoying, and I would rather be fucking some way out of my league asian girls if I were there.

That is a sign she took a pic of, she said its like a music festival without the music and there is tons of drugs there. She said it was more insane that the article described it as and lots of fun.
