I believe I may have found one source of the contamination problem. I was trying to incubate in my closet using a space heater with a digital temp. control. For some reason the temperature would always get so high that it would shut down and I'd turn it back on. I started leaving the door of my closet open and regulating it with a combo of my heater and a/c until it said about 78 degrees. It seemed like while I was using this, every day I'd wake up the next morning to find another contamination in one of my jars. Since, I have stopped using the heater and just leaving the door closed. It seems that the jars have started colonizing a lot faster even though it isnt at optimal temperature and I haven't had anymore contaminations thus far (fingers crossed ). I think the heater may have been allowing for contamination. I don't think it's the only answer, but it seems to be a big part of it from my observations.

yeah seems like the warmer the temp the more contamination you get.

break your verm up next time and i dont think you will have any issues, also you should flame sterilize your needle between each jar to avoid cross contamination.

Yea I thing the coarse verm was a factor too. I did sterilize the needle with a flame until red hot each time and used alcohol, although I didn't use a glove box. I will be more careful next time with a glove box, finer verm and lysol
