My fathers second wife, a smoker, has taken to cultivating her own tobacco, she'd been on about if for years soI pulled the trigger and gave her some quality seeds.
How do you cure it? Curing it is the big thing. I think you dont use a flu, so how do you do it? Please be as detailed as possible so I can give her good advice for her first crop.

how are you curing it, the cure makes a huge difference in the flavor

I have seeds for a couple of different tobacco strains, I havent planted any yet though. unfortunately one is rustica and the other is a hopi variety. the rustica I'd had was badly cured so if anyone has had these they should fill us in on their experiences or share with us their favorite varieties

I'm planning on growing rustica and a cuban strain. I hear tobacco is a sensitive plant. Your thoughts?

i air {colour cure} it first by hanging the green leaves up, till they turn brown,,,
then { this is optional } i have a kiln i made,,,,out of wood, a wood box,, about 5 ft tall,,,a little wide,
and i have a crock-pot with water in the bottom for humidity,,and run a 120 watt heat lamp,,,
i try to keep the temp at 100-125...and the humidity around 60%
one day in the kiln is like 1 week to air curing,
you can just hang the baccy up, and let it dry,,,and it will be smokable,
a good place for free seeds, and info is FAIR TRADE TOBACCOO.COM
tell them i ''chicken'' referred you there,

This is badass man thanks for the link. What about rustica makes it unsmokable? That's one of the strains I've been thinking about growing ever since I read Jeremy Narby's The Cosmic Serpent, where he talks about Amazonian shamans using that strain (I think) in ceremonies. Apparently it has the potential to be highly psychoactive depending on how much you ingest and the manner in which you ingest it. I believe he says the tribes he was with down there puff on huge cigars of it all throughout the day during the preparation for ayahuasca ceremonies, something like that. I thought it would be cool to grow it and try it out. Is it just the nicotine content is so high that it nauseates you when you smoke it, or is it the taste, or does it burn poorly? I'm a total novice when it comes to growing anything, don't know much about tobacco in particular. I'll check out that link but I was just wondering if you could give me a quick answer as to why rustica isn't a good strain to grow. Thanks

well the main reason is it has such a high nicotine level, it will choke a horse,
