Where can I find a used autoclave/retort? I've been looking around on the internet with limited success. I've emailed fungi equipment and a few places but haven't heard back from anyone yet. We've been thinking about retrofitting a large propane tank but I think it would be quite the task.

Just got an autoclave at an auction for 300$ Works great, Had a piece of dirt in the solinoid, and thats all that was wrong with it. Lol stupid doctors couldnt fix their pen if they broke it...

Its listed for 6700$ new, And about 2500 used.
It does both liquid (grain) and solid (wont be used..) I am going to be running some tests with it to see if it will fuck up my SFD's with high sterilization temps/pressures.
Rogger, I know I asked you about SFD's in an autoclave, But what about PF, How long would I have to sterilize say 20 1//2 pints at 25 psi? Is there a claculation for this? I cant find it anywhere.

Doctors don't get paid to fix things, so the hospital will go buy a new autoclave for them. Whats more, I would like to see you try to get a medical education, and THEN call a doctor stupid. Don't go calling doctors stupid because it wasn't worth their time to dig dirt out of machinery.

No, No I didnt mean it like that, Sorry if I offended anyone. I was just saying they could have fixed it cheaper then getting a new one. It took me 5 min to clean out the fitting. (I know absolutely nothing about autoclaves) When I got it the whole thing was ripped apart electical wise, as they where trying to fix it. But it was working just fine... Just a little plugged up with 1 piece of dirt behind 1 bolt. Besides Now that I think of it, Its a little beat up. One from a doctor wouldnt be in such condition, Probably a tattoo artist, Or nail salon.

But, if your time is worth $$$$$ per minute, why waste time tinkering when you can replace easily and deduct on taxes?

I posted something similiar earlier. RR's designs are fascinating! I may try to design my own boiler/sterilizer. The only set back being having to babysit for so many hours at a time.

But it was already fucked with. Meaning someone was trying to fix it. But they were fucking ith the electrical when the problem was mechanical. If time was really $$ they wouldnt have tried to fix it in the first place. They payed 6700$ for this unit new, Or someone did. You dont just throw out your car when you get a flat tire, You fix it.

We're looking to find a unit that runs at 15 psi, so that we can do quicker runs during the day. I'd like to be able to process approximately a hundred bags a day. We may not be able to do that much at first but it would be nice to have the ability to expand. Honestly I don't have the schedule/plan fully worked out yet as far as the day to day processing schedule. Kind of on a rant here.
We're looking at a unit from a used food service equipment place. it's quite a drive to get the unit and we aren't sure yet how much it will actually weigh. We're specifically looking at a 4' diameter by 8 ft long vertical retort. We'd be looking to modify it and run it horizontal. We're still waiting to hear how much the thing ways though to see if it'll fit on one of the trailers.
I've seen your setup RR, and it looks awesome. We're just hoping to run under higher pressure to process a little quicker and hopefully help break down the pine a little bit more.

I know I have said this before but usually the constraint is fruiting space. Once you know that you can work backwards and calculate everything else. For example to use a 100 substrate bag a day autoclave 6 days a week assuming a 3 month fruiting cycle, you will need fruiting space for 7,200 bags - and a market for the product of course.
If you only have space for half of that you can only use your clave half the time - more to the point even a 'clave three times the size, automated packing, robotic stacking and a seperate spawn plant makes no difference to your production ability.

We'll be setting up a 30'x140' greenhouse sometime in the near future; it's sitting here in pieces, we just need the time and weather to clear a spot for it. The space will be dedicated to both incubation and fruiting of the blocks. We put up a steel building over the summer that's 60'x 120' which there's some space to work in, but the majority of it's for machines. Once everything's up and running we can definitely expand but that's what we're looking at for now.

Actually, the constraint in this example is dry room space for colonization. Assuming shiitake with a three month cropping cycle, 2 1/2 months of that is in colonization/browning, and just two weeks in fruiting. This means you want roughly 5 parts colonization room real estate for each 1 part fruiting room real estate.
I'd use separate enclosures for each. The dry room can have a high CO2 level, but the fruiting room needs to stay below 1000 ppm.

Check with john at alohamedicinals.com I know he has a few used retorts and boilers. Bear in mind, with a large autoclave/retort, you'll really only be able to run one load per day, so running at 15 psi isn't going to speed things up much. You may or may not save energy by running at a higher pressure, since it will take more energy to build the pressure, and longer to heat up and cool down. RR

I purchased these and each can run a total of 800lbs of bagged substrate in the 13 x 22 SacO2 bags. They are 4x4x8 and we will be running a 289,000btu "output" steam boiler. I am told they take 45min to get to temperature @ 15psi w/ 5HP boiler.
1HP = 33,475 Btu/h output
Be weary of anything that will require more than a 10 hp boiler. You would have to get inspected w/permits and must have a boiler engineer on duty.

They were built by American Sterilizer company a long time ago. They are in very good shape though and the gaskets are easy to change out and available for replacement.
