Happiness is not that great
    #15760230 - 02/04/12 12:22 PM (3 months, 23 days ago)

Happiness can seem like a good thing, even an ideal. Why is this? What's so great about feeling happy? What is feeling happy, exactly? Is it having your needs met? Is it being safe? Is it doing what you want to? In all of these cases, it seems selfish to be happy. Happiness instills blindness to that which does not fit into the picture that the happiness requires. Failure, loss of personal safety, hunger, starvation, and death and the suffering of others.

So what's so great about being "happy"?

Having the correct amount of chemicals in your brain creates happiness.

"It is the "Devil" who caused women to show their legs, to titillate men - the same kind of legs,
now socially acceptable to gaze upon, which are revealed by young nuns as they walk about
in their shortened habits. What a delightful step in the right (or left) direction! Is it possible
we will soon see "topless" nuns sensually throwing their bodies about to the "Missa Solemnis
Rock"? Satan smiles and says he would like that fine - many nuns are very pretty girls with nice legs." -La Vey- Aka The Black Pope

Reductionism is not the answer to the human condition.

What puts those chemicals there? And further, which combination are you referring to as happiness? It the same as Paul and Joe's?

What is happiness?

It feels good, and feeling good is my biggest priority in life. Why does being happy mean you can't be aware of unhappiness in the world?

Happiness is mission complete; all accomplishments met and being met simultaneously. It is not just a little stirring of emotions. It is a state of mind.

--------------------
Find me in the backyard, sailing my kettle. Playing poker with insects, wearing a cup of tea. A hat of brimstone, yellow-crimson, looking like a giant flea. Forever my friend: so my energy this day I lend, I practice faking it to pretend, and become the actor in the end. My folly hangs on the trees like leaves and drips in the falling breeze, the tock of a minute here shakes me to my knees.

"It feels good, and feeling good is my biggest priority in life."

Why? Is a life that is spent feeling good a life well-lived? How have you determined this to be the case?

"Why does being happy mean you can't be aware of unhappiness in the world?"

This is a stretch from what I said. Are you happy that there is unhappiness in the world?

I'm in college to be an automotive technician. In layman's terms...a mechanic.

It's "well-lived" by my standards. View it from whichever arbitrary angle you choose. What do you mean how have I determined this to be? It seems like you're trying to imply the existence of some objective standard or criteria for a life being well-lived. We are just a bunch of apes that find ourselves having an experience called life as we try to keep ourselves emotionally satisfied until we die.

This is such a ridiculous statement.  Yes, authentic happiness IS that great, relative to all other possible emotions. It's the greatest feeling a human can have in the narrow spectrum of human emotions.  It's why smoking weed is so great.  Do you have an alternative that is greater??

---In all of these cases, it seems selfish to be happy.

I think it'd be quite a bit more selfish to disturb others with your unhappiness, don't you?
