some martial arts are pretty stupid. i studied kung fu for 6 years and when i started getting in fights i got my ass kicked. the club i trained at is actually very good as far as traditional martial arts go. the problem is that most of the stuff traditional martial artists practice is bogus and the rest is only useful in particular situations. if you wanna learn to fight practice one of the many types of boxing or MMA. if your dead set on an asian style then find a club that does real sparring... none of that point scoring bullshit the taekwondo guys do.

it doesn't matter what your expectations are when you first walk through the door. after a few years your gonna think you can fight even if that's not the case. that's why traditional martial arts are largely a scam.

I know a few people who have been involved in traditional martial arts for many years and they have no delusions about being a bad ass fighter because of it.
