Wow yeah, thanks for sharing! On MO one guys states that those spikes are there for defence against predators.
Thats cool as I have not seen any other mushrooms that openly display a 'shroom armour' like this species exhibits!

Try the link again, always seems to fix that issue. Or you could try typing the observation number 87262 into the search field.

What a mystical looking fungi! Amazing how large the spines are, especially compared to the size of the pins coming up. Amazing Thanks for posting the photo Lanlord.
Also, thanks for posting that link Alan. It encourages me to improve my photographing skills, and maybe one day, be on the same level as those photos. Simply stunning galleries.

I dont get how those hairs act as a means of defense? To me and I'm not expert, but it seems as tho it would be more of a means of reproduction.

Not sure what you mean? I'm talking out the spines (like they could be a Spinellus sp, they tend to like to attack Mycenas) but I guess it would be very easy to see under a microscope whether the spines were an infection or whether they were actually from the mycena itself...

Wow! So I read the paper that was linked on MO and those little spines are called "pileosetae" and are definately not the spinellus fungus that coincidently likes to grow on the caps of Mycenas! And there are actually a few other Mycenas under the section "longisetae" that have evolved this adaptation. The diversity of fungi is just baffling, with all our creative and imaginative efforts, we couldn't think this stuff up yet nature brings into being these most astounding designs!
