How do they know its not a parasitic zygomycete like Spinellus fusiger?

Not sure what you mean? I'm talking out the spines (like they could be a Spinellus sp, they tend to like to attack Mycenas) but I guess it would be very easy to see under a microscope whether the spines were an infection or whether they were actually from the mycena itself...

Wow! So I read the paper that was linked on MO and those little spines are called "pileosetae" and are definately not the spinellus fungus that coincidently likes to grow on the caps of Mycenas! And there are actually a few other Mycenas under the section "longisetae" that have evolved this adaptation.  The diversity of fungi is just baffling, with all our creative and imaginative efforts, we couldn't think this stuff up yet nature brings into being these most astounding designs!
