Wow yeah, thanks for sharing!
On MO one guys states that those spikes are there for defence against predators.

Thats cool as I have not seen any other mushrooms that openly display a 'shroom armour' like this species exhibits! :psychsplit:

But wouldn't the predators just eat the spikes?

Try the link again, always seems to fix that issue.  Or you could try typing the observation number 87262 into the search field.

Also check out his time-lapse of these growing (he posted a link on the MO page). It's amazing!

im no expert but i would assume those things sticking out aren't for protection but more like dandelions. to help spread the species...hopefully one blows down to Texas

just a guess

What a mystical looking fungi! Amazing how large the spines are, especially compared to the size of the pins coming up. Amazing:sunny: Thanks for posting the photo Lanlord.

Also, thanks for posting that link Alan. It encourages me to improve my photographing skills, and maybe one day, be on the same level as those photos. Simply stunning galleries.

I dont get how those hairs act as a means of defense? To me and I'm not expert, but it seems as tho it would be more of a means of reproduction.
