san pedro questions
    #15746032 - 02/01/12 04:15 AM (3 months, 26 days ago)

So basically I wanna grow San Pedro. But I'm as good as clueless when it comes to cacti and I can't seem to find the answers I need.

What is the growth rate?

How much does age effect the mescaline? can I impatiently wait till it grows 12 inches and rip it up and start making tea?

in your opinion is cacti worth investing time in if it is purely for recreation and you have no general interest in cacti

Cactus are pretty easy to grow as long as you water and light them adequately they are pretty set and forget for the most part going from seed to saplings is the hardest part but you can buy 1+ year old sproutlings. If your intention is just to grow till its old enough to eat why don't you just save yourself the trouble and buy 1 foot long cuttings? Then you won't even have to fuss with growing. Ps the average growth rate is around a foot a year.....so yah. Also have you ever eaten cactus?

First question... It depends. But on average 6 to 12 inches per year in a pot. At the extreme end.. I have one that hasn't grown at all for the past two years since I got it. Stunted at about 2 foot. But this is very strange.

You can have your cactus and eat it too. You wouldn't tear up the cactus if you wished to make some medicine. Just cut the top off and leave a base of at least 3 inches, then a new cactus (a pup) will sprout from the base and you can keep on growing. The mesc content can depend on many factors, not just age. Older is better so I've heard, but I don't know if it has been scientifically determined, and IME all the cacti I've come across have been of similar ages, although not as young as you're talking about. Genetics is a big influence. But you'll hear lots of theories about what else affects the mesc and how to possibly increase the concentration. My attitude towards having some idea of the mesc content is a bit of a "suck it and see" approach. You might want to get a different species of trich, like a peruvian torch or a bolivian torch, IME they tend to pack more punch.

Yes cacti are worth investing in. If ya haven't gotten into growing them before, then ya never know... ya just might like it so much you'll get another one, and another, and another.. It can be hard to cut them down after you've been looking after them for a long time. I tend to get cuttings from other sources and mostly leave the plants in my collection alone.

All the best with it.

Try repotting. The soil can get depleted or more likely - compacted and your plants can't breath. I made up my own mix and they have been doing great. My sick ones recovered and my healthy ones are getting very plump. I may post some pictures later. When transplanting knock off all the old soil and if any roots look sick, just cut them off.

1. I replaced ALL my pots with clay; not plastic nor glazed ceramic as they don't breathe.

2. I put one to two inches of gravel/pebbles in the bottom for better drainage.

3. Soil mix was potting soil(4) + sand (4) + perlite(2) + peat moss(1) + bone meal for phosphorous (mfg. recommendation).

Good tips. Yeah I re-potted at about the time that I got it 2 years (or more I can't remember exactly) just with a bit of cacti mix. I was curious about 3 months ago and took it out of it's pot, to check for signs of rot, root boundedness, mealy bugs or some such and was quite underwhelmed that there was no rot, no mealies, and it wasn't too root bound. So I popped it back in it's pot. It's quite an anomaly in contrast to the every other plant I have. The other plants I got from the same guy are all thriving. But TBH I don't care really that much about it and wouldn't be upset if it suddenly died. I've been tempted to chop it down and dissect it. But if I get the urge though to try and fix it, I might just do as you said, cheers.

Here in utah I get full sun. Approx 8 months of growing done in a year. I average about 8-12 inches on most of my cacti.

Grow from cuttings. Cuttings and seeds are both a huge commitment time wise.

IMO, the best thing you could do is to spend A LOT of money on a shit load of cuttings. Cut off somewhere around 5-6 inches of each cutting and let them root and begin to grow them and obviously you will consume the rest of the cactus that you don't plan on growing.

If you just start growing them to consume asap then it's going to be at least 3 years before you are really satisfied with what you have. As far as your tripping goes.

I had begun by purchasing quite a few cuttings and off different types. Every season I have pretty much chopping them all to keep them all pupping. Trying to double my plants as much as I can. Then once I have as many as I can I will just let them all grow, giving me loads and loads of good healthy and big cacti. Propagating them is just to much fun !
