Best 2012 Summer Music Festivals?
    #15741843 - 01/31/12 08:36 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Hey there!
Looking to get my summer together, trying to see what people are thinking of as the best of this year's Summer Festivals. I am trying to find cool places to vend and at the same time see some the country (and world!) while I am doing shows.

We're looking at 2 very West Coast shows for late spring (Symbiosis in NV and Lightning in a Bottle in CA) - these are like a 7,000 mile round trip from here - so East Coast events would be a great place to start - early June - August

Thanks!!!

hard to tell until the lineups are announced

as of now, the only one i'm definitely hitting up so far is Wanee which is in April.. and on my birthday woooo 2 nights of furthur and allman brothers :dancingbear:

i usually don't enjoy festivals. i much rather save my money to see my favorite bands as many times in a row as possible. furthur and phish tour all summa bay bay

I'll be going to Aura in Florida, Wanee in Florida, and Wakarusa in Arkansas. Waka starts at the beginning of June.

I never really see people selling stuff at Wanee except for posters. Blackwater is at the same place as Wanee and I think that is in August. Aura is kind of small. Like 2000 people but I'm sure you could sell some stuff there. I haven't been to Waka yet so I'm not sure how vending would be.

Oh yeah I meant buy a vending spot, that is definitely the way to go.

I vended the first Aura, wanted to do the second, but my home burned down, then somehow missed the info on this years...

Wanee wants $1K to get a vending spot there, so that is pretty much out of my price range.

Waka I've done the past 2 years, but this year's line-up was so-so, so I wasn't sold...

Thanks very much everyone!!!

I really want to go to Symbiosis, Burning Man, and maybe Electric Forest. Those are the three on my radar. Bella's lineup isn't looking too good this year so I'm going to skip that one, even though it's local.

the double jj ranch is such a beautiful place for a festival.

EFF is no rothbury though

the lineup is all right for me -- bought my ticket but nothing too outstanding IMO.
i'm hoping for at least 1 more jammy headliner to give more of a rothbury feel and maybe shpongle (no, sts9 is not a jam band)

with ~1.5hr drive i can't not go.

Back on track
All Good would be a nice east coast festival for ya.  it'll be large enough that it should be worth your while to vend there. and the lineup is great
Further
DSO
Yonder
UM
Keller
just to name a few

FUCK i wanna go to all good now!

Thank you all this is REALLY helping me out.

The Rootwire one looks really cool!!!!!

Starscape is in such a neat location, I would be down to check that out, also have family in MD, so that's close...I love the fact that it is a decommissioned fort - It was like being in an event at Mayan Ruins with all the foresty trees taking over the concrete remains of the fortress. Bad Ass.

Haven't heard of some of these will look into them;
Big Up
governers ball
Electric Zoo

All Good might be a great one!

Does Movement in Detroit have vending? I have some friends that are linked into that pretty well...

Again my humblest thanks to everyone!

I dunno, you could look in to the harvest fest on harry brown's farm up in Starks, Maine. It's a music festival, and it's pretty large, and there are little to none sober people that go there.

i dunno it was just so fucking hot the whole time, police (undecover and uniform) were everywhere and hassling people and i didn't really think many of the bands played that well. that was the first time ive seen furthur and it was a total letdown, they didn't even finish out there time slot and played like they were the 70 year olds that they are. just not worth the price of the ticket in my opinion, although i will say i did have fun.

Allgood sent me a message that said the big announcement is coming soon. I think they like to save the best for last. They always have the best lineup out of all the festivals. I can't go to it this year because I have a family thing to do. I really don't want to go to ohio either. I hope next year they move it back to the mountains.

WOW! wannee wants $1K to vend? I would think theirs would be less than Waka or EFF, but I guess wannee looks like its grown a little bit this year..more and more folks head down to live oak...

Ya, I wasn't too sold on this year's waka lineup but its mulberry so it'll be great regardless I expect..plus the Waka team always does a great job at eclecticism and getting small bands that I won't even know- but know I'll love many of em. I actually ran into ya dw, at waka '10- bought one of those killer DMT mandalas you made- need to PM ya bout getting another of those- anyway I think I'm going to hit lightning in a bottle for sure- heard so many great things- also gonna try to do burning man- never made it before- and if cheese announces a horning's hideout fest (I've heard they are) I will be there hopefully.

Here's what I'ma try to hit on the east coast: - Aura is going to be great I expect http://www.auramusicfestival.com/
EFF (YES!)
Waka
Wannee
SummerDance (lotus fest)

Yeah wanee is pretty expensive, but it is nothing like the mother-of-all-ridiculously-expensive-vending-spots-at-festivals - ULTRA

They want $8K

Since I hand make all my stuff, there is no way I could ever clear the money back to make it worthwhile. I wish there was some way to get them to do like a crafter's artisans market...make the prices reasonable for people not buying glowsticks by the boatload from China and reselling...

And thanks for the support! Yeah I actually love Waka and that whole area...beautiful spot!

Miami is the only place they get away with this type of shit. Ultra tix (entrance) had an 'early bird sale' that i got online for 15 min ahead of time. While trying to buy my shit the site crashed and i couldn't check out. I tried for the next hour to get tix and finally got in, but the price went from like $150 to $250because they sold out of the 'early bird' shit (impossible to get.) Then when i tried to buy they declined my card for no reason. (had plenty of $$)

My girl (who had already bought her ticket) went back on and tried to buy me one and her shit got declined because you are/were only allowed one transaction per card.

Finally I had a third person successfully buy my ticket. The catch: each ticket had an additional ~$45 'service fee'

So I started out thinking I would get my ticket for $150 and ended up paying $300 (DOUBLE!) :crankey:

yeah ultra sells out fast, which is pretty crazy when u think about it, how many festivals sell out months before it happens? just shows how popular EDM is now, its ridiculous compared to like even 4 years ago when i got into it

300 is a lot for a fest where u dont camp out at, plus u gotta get a hotel and shit and pay for afterparties and shit...so basically you need to have a LOT of disposable cash to go to ultra

at camp out festivals, they dont have afterparties, they just have latenight sets and even silent disco's, its free and better...u dont have to leave the festival at 12 like ultra and have to figure shit out when ur spun either, ur just at the campgrounds the whole time

EFF is like 250, bisco will be like 180 probly again...and id much rather rage a festival like those than ultra anyways

Ultra is actually outside my front door, I can see it from my window. I sat out front and vended on the sidewalk last year, the cops even had a spot where they wouldn't bother you, THAT was actually pretty cool.

But yeah a festival where you can't camp? WTF? A good friend of mine works hospitality and can get me in free every year, so I usually go to check out the madness, but he can't get my whole vending booth in...

BUT I did talk to some guys at Wakarusa who guerrilla set up their vending booth at ULTRA a few years back. They said they were merchandising for some performer and made a big deal, so security just left them alone - I was impressed!

The fucker almost sold out before they released even a partial line up, I guess their reputation is that good.

I know its supposed to be the premiere event, but I am seriously skeptical about the crowd being cool at an event that will cost anyone coming from out of town a minimum of $1500; And that's just to attend the actual event (+ hotel, travel -n- food and or pills).

Miami is everything that's wrong with the scene right now. The premiere artists that play Miami go to clubs that have swapped the dance floors with extra rows of booths. If you're male and willing to dress a certain way you can get in and see ur favorite DJ, only if you're willing to spend $500+ dollars. Buying a bottle to get in somewhere is  laughable if im going to a techno show- usually you end up making one drink out of the whole thing before you start rolling. Its fucking frustrating.

Ultra is one of the few events in Miami where you can see good acts and not have to dress in some bull shit, non-rave attire, but again, it will cost you.

By the time I add up everything I spend on this 3 day event, I could probably do Wanee + another fest like Bonaroo for the same $$$.

I probably will not do this again next year...  Its also fucked up that Ultra doesn't coincide with WMC anymore. From what I can tell doing both the same week was like electronic heaven, but again enjoying the combo would cost you at least $2500 for the week of partying. Comparatively, You could probably do EDC, burning man, and wanee for the same amount.

Basically, I predict the festival ending by ripping everyone off and canceling half the line up (within ten years.)

So now that the Allgood lineup was released yesterday, does anybody think they'll be attending in 2012?  I've been to the last 3, but now due to the location change, it's going to be quite a bit further from me and I will possibly be relocating for work this year, making it even further.  I'm not as excited about the headliners this year as I was for previous years.  I'm dissapointed they never had Buckethead back again since 2009.  I was also hoping to see STS9 and Bassnectar again.  Maybe they'll be added later on.  I've always been interested in checking out Gathering of the Vibes, which happens to be the same weekend as Allgood this year, I believe, but they don't have a lineup posted yet (but they're selling tickets... what gives with that?).  Bonaroo looks like it has a pretty sick lineup, though.  I'm just not sure I'll be able to make the long trip.  Plus, me and the wife will be on vacation the week before that, so it might not be feasible even if we can make the trip.  I might just need to pick one and go, regardless, because I can't imagine summer without hitting up a music festival.  There's always Moedown in September.

Yeah Bonnaroo looks like a nice line-up, will check GOTV for sure too, thanks for reminding me!!!

Im going to All Good. So far it looks like the best festival this year. GOTV doesn't usually release their lineup until march. Ive heard some bad things about Vibes though so i dont think ill be going. I might be doing Delfest on Memorial Day weekend. That lineup looks stellar!

What's going on in cali or relatively close to cali this year?
I've never really been into the whole fest scene, but I would love to finally get out to one this summer.

What is your definition of 'jam band'? A band that improvises on stage? Do you find jazz boring? What do you find entertaining? Please provide sources

Since you were unable to address the question or come up with some kind of defense of your argument beyond throwing in the name justin bieber, i'm afraid that i'm going to have to award the point to CheesePlease.

I checked out Delfest.  Looks like it's mostly bluegrass music.  I'd consider it, but it's the same week I'll be on vacation, so that's out.  I'll be watching for Starscape to release a lineup, but a single day/night is quite short for a festival.  I guess for now I'll just be watching who gets added to the allgood lineup and when the gotv lineup is announced.

Got so much love for those guys..they really killed it at electric forest last year..also got to catch one of their individual shows in my hometown and it was great energy, great music, great peoples...I want to make rootwire really bad..so happy dosio is doing their own fest- the location and festivities look amazing--http://rootwirefestival.com/  Looks like it has a bit of the spiritual/knowledge/awareness workshops along with a bigger focus on art installations and such- kinda like lightning in a bottle

im talking about the camp grounds located in the park, if you only had a 1 day ticked you didn't have access to these areas, and everyone knows the campgrounds are where all the drugs are at. to be fair i did get some pretty decent WoW there but once i dosed i started feelng uncomfortable about "spreading the love" because of all the po po everywhere. uniformed cops snuck up on our campsite at like 2 am while my buddy was sellin bars to fuck with us. my friend got punched and had his tent and campsite completely tossed by undercover cops because he called out this UC who was sticking out like a sore thumb while walking around the campgrounds trying to bust people. all n all not very good vibes.

Bisco is on private grounds and cops arent allowed inside without a ticket like everyone else

the bikers done give a fuck as long as you listen to them

but if i was at a fest and saw a UC, id probly run around and let a bunch of people know

Symbiosis Gathering continues to look better and better.  It now looks like a good number of my favorite producers will be there.

I caught Papadosio twice at Bear Creek last year. They have been putting on really good shows lately.

Bear Creek... ohh how i miss it. saw zach deputy followed by trey followed by big gigantic... EPIC. to me Bear Creek draws in the classiest of festival goers, something about all that funk that just draws in the right acts and crowds.

as for fest im hitting up this year... Ultra (only on sunday to see bassnectar) as well as Wanee fest which is a must.

Bear creek was a great time! I stood on the gate/center for 6 straight hours. Caught MMW with Scofield and Trey and his band. Was a face melting night!

Also, I really with i could make Wanee.
Im thinking about making the trek again to go to either Magfest or Bearcreek. Depends on the lineups.

Some pics of Bearcreek
