Actress Demi Moore Hospitalized after possible Nitrous use

What are nitrous oxide ‘whip-its?’ Demi Moore hospitalization raises awareness of dangerous gas canister inhalant
Users risk permanent injury or even death by depriving the brain of oxygen

Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/health/nitrous-oxide-whip-its-demi-moore-hospitalization-raises-awareness-dangerous-gas-canister-inhalant-article-1.1012287#ixzz1kaXQa500

Whip-its: The high you can buy at Wal-Mart.

While most people use nitrous oxide canisters to make whipped cream, partyers inhale them for a brief, euphoric high.

Reports that actress Demi Moore, hospitalized earlier this week for a “seizure” and shaking, had inhaled the gas may spur more people to try the cheap buzz.

Nitrous oxide is characterized as an inhalant, used by those who like to “huff” chemicals.

People can buy canisters online or in the kitchen supply aisle of stores. Sales of balloons filled with the gas are often sold in the parking lots of concerts. Some just extract the gas out of cans of Reddi-Wip.

A quick flash is often accompanied by dizziness, lack of coordination and slurred speech. Since the effect is so brief, users tend to inhale again and again, increasing their feelings of giddiness.

“Essentially, you’re depriving the brain of oxygen,” said Bobby Alexander, a social worker at Realization Center, a drug and alcohol rehab center in New York City. “It’s an immediate, short-term high. Long-term use can definitely lead to brain damage.”

Deprivation of oxygen to the brain, called hypoxia, can cause many long-term problems, including memory loss.

In the short term, inhalants can cause users to have seizures or even sudden death.

People who inhale large amounts of nitrous oxide from a balloon can die of suffocation.

“You get nitrous oxide at the dentist, but it’s regulated,” explained Christine Fitzgerald, also on the staff of the Realization Center. “You’re not meant to inhale large amounts of nitrous oxide in one dose.”

Mixing the gas with other drugs or alcohol increases the risk of serious injury or death.

The gas itself is not illegal. In many states, however, it is illegal to sell or distribute nitrous oxide to a minor or abuse it for recreational purposes.

Some states, including New York, make possession of nitrous oxide with the intent to inhale or sell the chemical a crime.

Demi Moore Was Inhaling Nitrous Oxide
January 25, 2012 by: KRISTIN WONG
http://www.hollyscoop.com/demi-moore/demi-moore-was-inhaling-nitrous-oxide.html
As it turns out, “exhaustion” means “side effects of inhaling a dangerous amount of nitrous oxide.”

Demi Moore, who was hospitalized after a friend called paramedics on Monday, was reportedly inhaling nitrous oxide. AKA that stuff at the dentist that makes you not give a sh-t that you’re getting a root canal.

According to TMZ, a friend of Demi’s who was at her home told emergency workers she was doing whippets. Whippets are a street name for some specific type of nitrous oxide inhalant; my coworker just informed me “the Beastie Boys were big into them.”

TMZ says it’s “not a common drug amoung people of Demi’s age and social status.”

Mike D on the other hand…

“It’s typically used by younger people who are looking for a cheap thrill,” the site continues.

The friend apparently became upset when Demi had a reaction to inhaling and lapsed into semi-consciousness.

Another source told PEOPLE that Demi has been on a downward spiral for a while now.

“Really, it was over the last year her friends saw a change,” the source said. “She wasn’t sleeping as well, didn’t seem to be eating and looked really gaunt.”

Another source summed it up: “Demi is a mess.”

Sources close to both Demi and Ashton said that Moore had a prescription drug problem and it was a contributing factor to her breakup with Ashton.

“It was a sticking point for Ashton. He wanted her to take care of herself and get a hold of things, and she wouldn’t.”

Jesus fucking Christ, I hate people. Fuck Demi Moore, fuck her dumb friend, and fuck this journalist for making a big deal out of n2o. This whole world is so bored and gossip-infested that we're expected to actually care if some actress called an ambulance.

What about Gurtrude, the 90 year old lady who fell down stairs and died yesterday. We need to outlaw stairs.

Great, I bet they will now try to ban N2O canisters.  And one balloon with N2O is not going to kill anyone.

This isn't news worthy. Now if she had done PCP and went on a rage fest, I'd be interested.

No, essentially you're blocking glutamate from binding to NMDA receptors, as well as affecting numerous other receptors and ion channels (to a lesser degree).

Bobby is a social worker... not exactly qualified to make an informed statement on nitrous oxidde.

I've never seen wippets at any wal-mart I've been to, then again I've never looked or really buy things from the type of isle you'd find that at. Cooking supplies I assume? I wonder if every wal-mart sells them? It'd be a funny to ask an employee to let you know where you can find the nitrous or wippets or whipped cream chargers.

Same here...I have seen a handful of people pass out and collapse to the ground, as well as a few people go into minor convulsions/seizures  (including my self). The convulsions and what not (along with the blue lips) tend to occur when people just sit there and huff away on a balloon never breathing in fresh air, this is when oxygen is deprived.

Nitrous is actually rather safe, but you need oxygen! I tell people this all the time, breathe in a little bit of fresh air in between "huffs", otherwise all you're doing is suffocating your self. And you don't even need to huff it in and out, you can simply inhale some in, take a little bit of fresh air to pull it down into your lungs, then hold it...People never listen though and have their minds set on huffing a balloon until they're blue in the face   :nonono:.

PsilocybinMike, if you've never been to the point of being dissociated from "reality" you're doing it wrong :smirk:. Almost every time I take nitrous I am fully dissociated for a brief moment, then as I come back to every sound I hear loops and echoes over and over again.

I couldnt help but notice this being aired on tv... First it was a big stink that Demi Moore was hospitalized. I'm thinking big Damn deal. Just cause you are a "celebrity" makes you extra special. People are hospitalized every day... Over serious matters and it doesn't make the "news" or capture attention because they aren't celebrities. I guess I sound heartless but Damn... Shit happens. Celebrities are human too... Why do people seem to be so interested in their lives? Because they are "famous" and are worth millions? Big deal. They shit and die like the rest of us....

The next day I was flipping through channels (i don't even have cable... I have basic tv through a converter box as of now due to being poor) and TMZ came on... Talking about nitrous. I was shocked like... Nitrous? Really? Actually it *is* news! That just doesn't seem to fit the picture but if that's what she's into then ok... It's a shame she's hurting herself but whatever.... People sometimes do dumb stuff... Just wondering if this is going to cause some kind of impact on anything in an aerosol can... i mean... She's a celebrity after all.... Hah.

It I am talking out of my ass then whatever... I'm drinking and felt like spouting off....

It's normal to go into seizures when huffing gas all night, her friend shouldn't of called the paramedics because of that. Major party foul.

I hope they do ban them. You should see how fucking wreckless kids are with this shit in my area. These people literally suck on 50 balloons at least in a night at a rave. Last september I seen a girl perfectly healthy sucking on a balloon, next thing you know she starts fishing, drops on the ground, hit her head on a rock and was uncouncious for an hour. Now imagine seeing all that for the first time ever while on LSD. Its fucked dude.

It might not have even been nitrous.

Apparently she 'smoked something' and started having convulsions.

Sounds like spice to me.

Friend says on 911 call Demi Moore was convulsing
http://news.yahoo.com/friend-says-911-call-demi-moore-convulsing-174130877.html

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Demi Moore smoked something before she was rushed to the hospital on Monday night and was convulsing and "semi-conscious, barely," according to a caller on a frantic 911 recording released Friday by Los Angeles fire officials.

The woman tells emergency operators that Moore, 49, had been "having issues lately."
"Is she breathing normal?" the operator asks.
"No, not so normal. More kind of shaking, convulsing, burning up," the friend says as she hurries to Moore's side, on the edge of panic.
The recording captures the 10 minutes it took paramedics to arrive as friends gather around the collapsed star and try to comfort her as she trembles and shakes.

Another woman is next to Moore as the dispatcher asks if she's responsive.
"Demi, can you hear me?" she asks. "Yes, she's squeezing hands. ... She can't speak."
When the operator asks what Moore ingested or smoked, the friend replies, but the answer was redacted.

"Some form of ... and then she smoked something. I didn't really see. She's been having some issues lately with some other stuff. So I don't know what she's been taking or not," the friend says.

The city attorney's office advised the fire department to redact details about medical conditions and substances to comply with federal medical privacy rules.

Asked if Moore took the substance intentionally or not, the woman says Moore ingested it on purpose but the reaction was accidental.
"Whatever she took, make sure you have it out for the paramedics," the operator says.

The operator asks the friend if this has happened before.
"I don't know," she says. "There's been some stuff recently that we're all just finding out."

Moore's publicist, Carrie Gordon, said previously that the actress sought professional help to treat her exhaustion and improve her health. She would not comment further on the emergency call or provide details about the nature or location of Moore's treatment.
The past few months have been rocky for Moore.

She released a statement in November announcing she had decided to end her marriage to fellow actor Ashton Kutcher, 33, following news of alleged infidelity. The two were known to publicly share their affection for one another via Twitter.

Moore still has a Twitter account under the name mrskutcher but has not posted any messages since Jan. 7.
During the call, the woman caller says the group of friends had turned Moore's head to the side and were holding her down. The dispatcher tells her not to hold her down but to wipe her mouth and nose and watch her closely until paramedics arrive.

"Make sure that we keep an airway open," the dispatcher says. "Even if she passes out completely, that's OK. Stay right with her."
The phone is passed around by four people, including a woman who gives directions to the gate and another who recounts details about what Moore smoked or ingested. Finally, the phone is given to a man named James, so one of the women can hold Moore's head.

There was some confusion at the beginning of the call. The emergency response was delayed by nearly two minutes as Los Angeles and Beverly Hills dispatchers sorted out which city had jurisdiction over the street where Moore lives.

As the call is transferred to Beverly Hills, the frantic woman at Moore's house raises her voice and said, "Why is an ambulance not on its way right now?"
"Ma'am, instead of arguing with me why an ambulance is not on the way, can you spell (the street name) for me?" the Beverly Hills dispatcher says.
Although the estate is located in the 90210 ZIP code above Benedict Canyon, the response was eventually handled by the Los Angeles Fire Department.

By the end of the call, Moore has improved.
"She seems to have calmed down now. She's speaking," the male caller told the operator.
Moore and Kutcher were wed in September 2005.

Kutcher became a stepfather to Moore's three daughters — Rumer, Scout and Tallulah Belle — from her 13-year marriage to actor Bruce Willis. Moore and Willis divorced in 2000 but remained friendly.

Moore and Kutcher created the DNA Foundation, also known as the Demi and Ashton Foundation, in 2010 to combat the organized sexual exploitation of girls around the globe. They later lent their support to the United Nations' efforts to fight human trafficking, a scourge the international organization estimates affects about 2.5 million people worldwide.

Moore can be seen on screen in the recent films "Margin Call" and "Another Happy Day." Kutcher replaced Charlie Sheen on TV's "Two and a Half Men" and is part of the ensemble film "New Year's Eve."

Great, I bet they will now try to ban N2O canisters.  And one balloon with N2O is not going to kill anyone.

Just because some kids don't know how to control their nitrous intake, it should be banned? Great logic ya have there...They should ban ignorance, not the drug.

Nitrous is actually rather harmless when used properly and in moderation.

I'm just saying because it sounds like everyone here is saying that it does no damage wutsoever. Almost like they are encouraging it's use. I tried a few balloons at some rave once, the high was ok, but very short and pretty much pointless, it also gave me headaches.

Yea I would imagine so. Psychedelics are powerful enough on their own, I probably wouldn't want to alter my trip with that stuff.

I trip to heal not to get higher. :snub:

This sounds like it's more effective, for better or worse, when your physical tolerances are diminished.

Honestly, I used to do loads of it and first of all although it can be and sometimes is used as such, I never would use nitrous as an on its own drug. Nitrous, especially if you're doing in wippets, if that's all you're on you get head in a gong wah wah wah effect, which if you try and do a bunch loses "the magic" pretty quick and yea might leave you feeling like shit with a headache.

Simply put, nitrous is the ultimate enhancer. Using it by itself is doing yourself a true injustice as to depriving yourself of the AMAZING headspaces you can literally blast in to when you combine it with drugs like LSD, MDMA, 2C-E, Ketamine, and plenty of others.

When I'm on some legit LSD and it's of good quality and it has that totally smooth feeling that anyone who has had clean acid knows what I mean, where the trip comes on so naturally and calmly and visuals your brain generates in front of are really "peaceful" and mellow, once I add the nitrous the visual effects are nothing like they are like with nitrous alone and it's like injection steroid into the acid or whatever it is you've taken. The visuals can get up close to DMTesque intensity but I don't think I've ever been overwhelemed and remain just below the point of utter disassociation like a k-hole or a full blown anesthetic dose of nitrous, but am treading right on the line.

I don't know if it's just me but as long as I'm tripping, rollin, even just smokin weed occasionally, maybe with benzos and opiates or just benzos, I don't get the headaches, the hangovers, none of the negative side effects, it seems to neutralize it. I guess you could sort of compare to how if you wanna drink a bunch and then start doing lines of coke or do them through out miraculously you don't turn in to a drunken douche-bag who people are carrying that shits themselves at the end of the night in the car coming home on the highway. Everyone knows coke evens you out when you're drinking, and therefor people when people do coke they can drink sooo much booze. What I'm saying is when I trip or roll on one or more of a few different substances I like to mix nitrous with, it's kind of like how coke is with beer, and I can fearlessly eat high doses of a psychedelic while putting away multiple boxes of wippets to the dome over the course of 8-16+ hr trips and rolls. The psychedelics protect my brain from the shitty brain damage "my head is in a gong" feeling you get doing wippets by themselves that will leave you with a headache and you'll walk away with a pretty hollow experience.

When you use nitrous right, with the right drug or drugs, I swear in all my use of drugs ranging half my entire life, those were the experiences that were the most intriguing. I've sat with a box or two of wippets while already on benzos and with some weed I was able to hallucinate easily. I was doing this a few times a week for a nice little run, usually with LSD at least once or twice a week, and I'd see things even hear things I can't translate with anything in the dictionary. I'd see hieroglyphic writing appear on walls, symbols from an Asian language appeared on my T.V, right where subtitles would go if they were turned on, (looked like Chinese, Japanese but can't say for sure), both from nitrous + LSD experiences. I'll always fucking wonder what it meant, or for all I know it meant nothing, it could have been an ancient joke, could have been anything!

I live at home and got busted with wayyy too many empty carts and that wasn't received well at all. I was thrown out over it but did end up smoothing it over but agreed not to do nitrous again and I haven't since. I told them flat out I don't plan to never do them again and obviously being low income on unemployment or when I do work making like $300-400/wk tops I can't just move out, and if I did it's not like I could afford nitrous anyway.

In a nutshell though my insane experiences from combining nitrous with different drugs namely MDMA, LSD, 2C-E, Ketamine, I feel like it's almost a waste for me not to be pushing the envelope with these drugs and exploring these mostly uncharted head spaces which is one o the main things that makes me so interested in drugs. Having these unique experiences that may have never been done before. I used to read erowid in High School at the back of the class in keyboarding or whatever bullshit computer lab classes could do in my sleep at 15-16 and I remember wanting to be like some of these guys on erowid who were doing tings that blew my mind and at the time doing insane combination's that would have made me freak out and I looked up to these strangers almost like godlike figures, people who accurately described of +++++'s, DMT breakthroughs, high dose LSD, high dose mushrooms, and lots of crazy (sometimes reckless) combos. which I admit I got more courage to do not because I  was more then certain I'd be fine but in some darker times I didn't really give a fuck, and some of the best things to come from that bad situation was many drug experiments where I really pushed the envelope, and I'd have to say the craziest of them all were nitrous related.

People who haven't done it think it's like a dizzy feeling you get when you're deprived of oxygen.

It's a drug, not just an inhalant.

I'd do it once in a long while if I had access to clean nitrous.

It's people who go sit around sucking down 50 whip its in a sitting who fuck up thier brain.

Once or twice should be no problem.

Watching someone try N2O for their first time is almost always funny, especially those that are naive to things other than drinking and occasional pot smoking, and those trying it for their first time while on a psychedelic or MDMA....the reactions are priceless.

I have been around a LOT of nitrous, and I never really partook in the ceremony...

I had to get a cavity filled a couple years ago though, and I got to use n20 during the procedure. My god it was fucking awesome :lmafo:. Never thought it would make getting a drill shoved into your mouth easier, tripping your fucking balls off!

Haha yea I've seen people really be blown away by the intensity of nitrous on other drugs, namely psychedelics/mdma. I don't really like to turn people on to nitrous though, just because when I got really into it I obviously had to share this new discovery with the people who I would usually trip with and try all sorts of shit with. Eventually I did and it was met with sort of a mixed reaction. I definitely made a bad impression by doing a SHITLOAD of wippets (we were tripping and when I have wippets I usually do them til they are gone), to the point where I was called out on it and then it dawned on me how this must look to a group of people who have no prior experience with this drug. The particular night I'm thinking of at the beginning of the night I said "by 2-3 a.m and these run out we are all going to wish we bought more", and suggested maybe we go to a smokeshop somewhat close that sold them and get more. I ended up getting right into them shortly after we dropped the tabs and was going relentlessly, my friend actually hid 1 box on me which I later thanked him for to save for the peak. Everyone there liked it but they don't trip nearly as often as me anyway, so they weren't buying nitrous and tripping on their own because they weren't tripping on their own to begin with.

I gave some to people another time and felt bad vibes like I was being looked at like a bad influence. I just felt strongly compelled to share this experience because of how amazing I found it, I tried relating it by comparing a normal trip to a regular season game, and tripping with nitrous like the super bowl of tripping.

I guess they call it hippie crack for a reason, although I've never done crack, when I start doing wippets I am SO compelled to keep doing them and doing them (especially if they are right there), and before I know it multiple boxes are gone and I run out, and every time I'm never satisfied, no matter how much I did I ALWAYS feel like I could've kept going. Whenever I would trip and doing wippets I'd eventually run out and much of the time I was still very much tripping and couldn't just go to sleep, so I'd usually move locations and lay down and trip out, but honestly I'd much rather be doing more nitrous because the way it brings out the visuals is fucking awe inspiring, it's the type of shit I would have never thought possible until I experienced it myself.

I have no discipline with nitrous. I haven't done it in awhile but when I did I would do it excessively and fairly often for a bit, and whenever I'd trip I could never fucking wait til the peak, and I'd waste them by doing them earlier in the trip. I still love the stuff though, maybe I will revisit it sometime and exercise some discipline.
