Deep Web - Tor alternatives
#15715627 - 01/25/12 09:43 AM (4 months, 2 days ago) |

I was wondering if there are any good ways to explore the 'deep web', other than Tor. I've heard about Freenet and i2p, but I've did some research on them and they seem kind of lame.
So my question is: how to explore the 'deep web' effectively without Tor?
Also, I've added a poll just to see how other people explore the 'deep web' (or not).

I just started using tor. It's pretty cool but I ahven't tried any other deep web stuff besides browsing some sites from directories. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but the networks are independent, right? Like you couldn't access a .onion site through i2P? I'm not too familiar with i2P

It's the world of technology: nearly everything is possible. I've visited a site on Tor a few days ago that allows you to acces i2P with Tor, so I would say: yes, it's possible.
If you have any interesting .onion links, feel free to share them with me. I can give you my .onion links (it are literally hundreds, if not thousands) in return. If you are interested, send me a PM (and give me five shrooms for the effort).
I've been using Tor for a long time now, so I'm very much interested in other networks other than the Tor network to explore the deep web. The deeper, the better.

Really?
Is the Tor network (and the other fore-mentioned networks as well, off course) the only deep web network that's known on The Shroomery?
To be honest, I'm a bit disappointed.

No. I was just wondering what other ways there are to explore the Deep Web, and how 'deep' one can go.
I'm almost certain that there is much more grey information that you can explore, and I'm wondering how to do this. That's the main reason for starting this thread.
If anyone could help me out on this one, it would be very much appreciated. I've been reading about this subject for a long time and Tor is about the 'deepest' that I've been on the internet.

So you're looking for "deeper" than Tor? Just sign up for a good (paid) UseNet server. The Feds don't do anything about any of the binaries on there... get a binary usenet reader and find a free server to test it out with, to see what I mean...
That being said, I try to just get my downloads from http links. It's a little harder to find a good link these days since they shut down megaupload - I just spent an hour looking for the new Sherlock Holmes avi over http... but hey, they won't care about me, they'll just tell the web server to remove the file.

What sort of stuff would I find on those UseNet servers? Is it comparable to Tor? Because I always thought that UseNet was more of a board-style thing to exchange information... Also, is there illegal content on it? And can you download software/movies/music on UseNet? Just asking, since I want to know what I'm paying for in the end. Is it a one-time payment only thing or do you have to pay a monthly fee?
Anyone that has more information about exploring the deeper parts of the internet?

I'm pretty sure Tor goes REALLY fucking deep. It's just a matter of finding them... That's the thing, hardly anything is linked or archived or whatever, so some of the more obscure stuff it may take a lot of digging to find, or linked by someone else. Unfortunately I haven't been using TOR for all that long, so I probably have most of the same links you do This is just what I've heard from coworkers who have been on TOR for a while

So what do you suggest if one would like to find out HOW to explore the Deep Web further - by going deeper (with Tor or without)?
I've literally spend hundreds, if not thousands of hours on reading about the Deep Web,Tor, etc.

Like Shroomism has already stated, if you want to go deep into the internet then TOR is the only technology that comes highly recommended. With enough time and effort, you'll certainly find whatever it is that you're looking for.

I am not really 'looking for something', I am just curious by nature. I am honestly very interested in this whole "under layer of the worldwide web.
Tor keeps intriguing me, but I have a feeling that there is much, MUCH more out there, hidden in the dark layers of the internet. It are those layers that I wish to explore.

ok, so i'm sold and just downloaded the Tor Browser Pack. I'm excited but have not clue where to look haha. Do I just search for .onion sites on google? ( i feel like such a nub for never knowing about Tor, none the less where to start).
Someone point me in any direction. Or is it just meant to be used as a Proxy so to speak

Here's a webpage about links to sites in the underbelly. You gotta be careful down there. If you're not careful, you could end up clicking a link that is fucked up. Its pretty scary shit.

Just reset it if you have a bad node somewhere. It won't be that fast given the number of nodes you bounce off, and the fact that they're often hosted by people with shitty internet connections(not necessarily shitty but my Wideband has amazing download but only 5 Mb/s upload which wouldn't be too great for running a node). Depending on what you're trying to do though, it usually works well enough for simple browsing, especially when you disable scripts and all that. Doing shit like downloading video is going to be like you're in 1995 again.

Well, when you get constant timeouts you can fix that pretty quickly. Works for me anyways, but I guess YMV's.

If you want to find something on tor, you'll find it. There are lists of sites for all sorts of things on tor. I mean, there is a anonymous drug marketplace termed "The Silk Road", on there. The entire system has it's own currency...it's like a black market on the internet. Of course there's more than that...
To me...Tor is what the internet would be like if "Freedom of Speech" existed.

Has anyone actually bought anything from the deep web? I know there are sites on the normal web where you can purchase pharmaceuticals without a prescription. Also there are other sites where users can review other users experiences with the companies to make sure they weren't given bunk meds or had their funds outright stolen. Its not like you could contact the BBB and tell them you never received your illegal prescription meds.

It is said that you can find anything on the internet if you know how to look. Fravia teaches that but for me it was TL;DR. I'd recommend starting with methods that make gathering information much more efficient.
