First growlog and some appreciation

Hey everyone!
Been a member here for years but never really posted too much, which was mostly due to the fact that my first few attempts at grows failed for various reasons. Recently though I got that spark to try again, but was adamant that I wouldn't have another failure on my hands. I dug farther than I had in the past and found a lot of new information and clarifications that I hadn't before. Primarily in Shea25's idiot proof version of the PF tek and the thread of questions that go with it, and RR's videos.
Well good news, I inoculated my jars on the 13th of January, and am happy to report that I finally got it right! I'm planning on following Shea25's and the mushroom growing videos' suggestion on the simple terrarium tek and got all my supplies ready for it, so just waiting for these jars to finish up. Just gotta remember to be patient, always patient. =)
Here's some pics with dates throughout, and I'll edit this post as it goes on with updated photos.
13 January, day of inoculation (I know, boring, but I enjoy documenting everything)

21 January

Closeup of Myc on 21 January

23 January

Closeup of Myc on 23 January

Made my SGFC the other day, too.

Contams noticed in one of the jars on 25 January

Down to 5 jars on 25 January, but 4 are 100% on the surface, and the other one probably will be by Friday. Thinking I'll pop 'em and dunk 'em on the 2nd of February.

All 5 jars have been 100% for about a week now, and did a 24 hour dunk followed by vermiculite roll on the 2nd of February. Birthed them into my SGFC on the 3rd. Also finished collecting supplies for the drying process. (Sorry for the large images, using photobucket for these ones and forgot to shrink 'em down.)

Finally noticed some pins today on February 11th! Taking a little bit longer than I was thinking (seem like a long time to anyone else?) But I'm hoping they'll take off, as last night there was nothing and this morning there were several pins on a few of the cakes.

Annnnnnnnnnd some pin porn. The little guys are growing up fast, and it's only February 13th. Get home from work every day and my wife can't wait to show me how much they've grown. Proud of these guys, someday they're gonna be all grown up and have to leave the nest.

February 14th and they're looking awesome. The bigger ones are around 2-3" long now. Wasn't really planning on posting any images for a couple of days, but wanted to bring something up that I thought was a little strange. I was peaking at them and it looked like some of them had torn veils already, obviously something of concern to me since they're so small, but I took a peak underneath the would-be veil, and it looks like the actual veil is still intact. Is this just from mycelium stretching along the stem and ripping when the mushroom starts taking off, 'cause I got a lot of myc buildup on the bottom of the stems. If so, then I figure this is a good time to raise some awareness to anyone starting a grow. Had me worried, haha.

Well, came home to something a little disappointing yesterday on February 15th. All of the little shrooms on one of my cakes had torn veils AND sporulated already, and a few on the other cakes look like they could any minute. I wasn't sure if I should just let them keep going or not, so I went ahead and harvested the whole cake just to see how much it would come out to. Only about 22g wet from them all. Any idea what that could be caused by? I have a feeling it might be humidity because my house is rather dry, but I've been keeping the SGFC pretty wet (always have moisture on the walls.) I still had good fanning going when I was around, but I work and my wife can only really fan them maybe once or twice while I'm gone during the day. And the temp stays around 75F all day So I dunno. Any help would be nice. Change humidity, FAE, temp, just let them keep growing?

This may be a bit preemptive for my grow, but a BIG thanks to the late PF, Shea25, RR, and everyone who has posted about successful runs using the teks and all the others who have commented, clarified, informed, educated, and bettered the techniques we all use. Thank you all so much for pointing out the why's and why not's and really helping the knowledge base grow.

OP updated with progress and some new photos. Unfortunately one of my jars got some contaminants, if anyone has any tips or advice about that there that'd be great. I have a feeling it was from being sloppy with the inoculation , didn't use a airtight container to do it in or anything. Also, any advice on using one jar to inoculate others? What's a good way to go about that? I'm thinking of doing that with one of them but am not sure if how easily attainable it is. Am I better off just getting a spore print at the end and running with that? Yeah, I guess that makes more sense. Any opinions or advice is welcome!
Oh, also, my SGFC look alright to everyone? It's about 4' off the ground and I'm using some solder wire spools to hold it up about 2" above the bins it's on top of, with holes like you can see in the picture on all sides. Room gets good sunlight during the day and stays at around 76F all day.

I have only use mono tubs and a martha closet but I am almost sure you are supposed to have holes on the bottom of that SGFC. Thats what I read yesterday anyway. Just look into it to be sure.

It's not necessary, I keep a lot of my holes taped up to keep a perfect humidity and environment for my cakes, I just make sure I air out the terrarium multiple times a day.

Yeah I have holes on the top and bottom as well, but thanks for the reminder Shroomsisay! And that's a good point to mindful of dj, I'll have to be sure to do some checks to make sure I don't have too much air allowance. Keepin' my fingers crossed!

Great job so far! Im about to start my first grow next week! Im using the B+ Strain so im hoping it works out well. Quick question for DJ:
Are you saying that you dont need to put holes in the bottom? And also when you say air out your FC a few times a day do you mean like just taking off the lid and faning it real quick... Just to prevent stagnent air?

Yes that's what im saying Different growers have different opinions obviously, and its best to learn from experience. But I think since your using per lite in you FC i assume, that its gonna hold all the water and save any water from running out of the FC. And I'd say fan it about 4-5 times a day. I've had good success fruiting this way
And Teliis keep us/me updated on your grow, I currently have a grow of Golden Teachers myself, check my threads if you wanna keep up with my grow

Birthed my cakes yesterday! Updated the OP with some photos of them in the SGFC. Hopefully I got this right and I'll have some good little pins going in a couple of days. And just a quick clarify, with the SGFC I pretty much just have to fan a couple times a day and don't really need to worry about misting at all, right? Obviously need to keep tabs on everything, but that's the primary gist of it? Unfortunately I don't have a hygrometer so I'm just going by feel. Here goes!

Yes you need to mist. The evaporation from the cakes is a big pinning factor. Fresh air exchange, is priority number 1 and humidity is secondary. With a properly built shot gun fruiting chamber, you don't need a hygrometer, as the humidity is always right on, if agin, it's built properly and you have at least 4-6 inches of perlite. If your cakes are dry, mist and then fan and when you go to fan again if they are wet, just fan. You will find that happy medium in no time.

Okay cool, so a good misting if there's no moisture on the cakes when I fan them, too easy. Got some little bumps along some of the cakes, almost looks like there's a ball bearing underneath the surface of the myc, hoping those are pins about to pop in a day or two! This has definitely been the hardest point to be patient with, haha.

Good luck to you sir! Those balls are most definitely pre-pins

Updated OP with new photo, finally got some little pins going! My initial reaction is that this stage took a long time (about 8 days) but does that seem normal to anyone else? Any chance it could be my FAE, humidity, water content of the cakes? Or am I just getting impatient and this is perfectly normal? Thanks for all your help so far! Really looking forward to harvest time.

You know in my opinion you're probably right on track. With cakes you can never be 100% sure when they will take off, but yours are showing all the right signs so I think you're doing just fine my man.

Threw in a little bit of pin porn for those of you who are of that persuasion. Hoping they'll be good to go by the weekend, but I think more realistically it'll be another week.
