Currently there are two bills in front of the U.S. Congress and Senate, called SOPA and PIPA. They aim to curb online piracy, which is a noble goal. However, as written, the bills will give the government and corporations unprecedented power over the Internet. If these bills pass, it is likely that we will have to permanently disable file attachments and image uploads to comply with the law. Many sites across the internet have set aside January 18th to call attention to this important issue. We have disabled hosted images for today to show what the site might be like under SOPA and PIPA.
Want to do something about it? Most politicians don't know a lot about the Internet and their main source of information is paid industry lobbyists. They need to hear from everyday constituents like us so they realize that SOPA and PIPA are not the right solutions to online piracy. Please take some time to read about the bills, and then contact your representatives today!

wait so does everyone have their own congressmen and senators show up according to the location of their IP address?
Wikipedia is going to be blacked out tomorrow.. let's hope to raise some sort of awareness

Yep it uses geolocation based on your IP, it's the same way we show the flag icon by your location if you have that feature enabled. Don't worry, it can't pinpoint your address or anything like that, it's usually only accurate to around 50 miles. But yeah anyone can do that if they get your IP address so use a proxy if it bothers you.

Already called em a couple hours ago.
If you guys go online and search for your congressional reps and the word sopa, you can find out about campaign contributions from pro and anti Sopa groups to each of them. Interesting for perspective.

Uh, well this sucks ass, but luckily though the internet will die if they try it and thus this bill will probably be shortlived if it even passes.
In honor of this protest though I got a gif to edit into this post as soon as the blackouts done. It's from some strange country hoe-down porno, and is hilarious.

Let them know that "I am a constituent of their representation and I personally demand that you vote no on SOPA and PIPA." Let them know that their future support from you depends on their actions taken in response to this bill

Don't just protest against SOPA and PIPA, but DRM as well.
DRM has been a bad idea from the get-go.

I like how everyone's calling the act of copying "piracy." You know, where captains of a country would change their flag to the skull and bones, then go and raid other ships, pilliaging their cabin boy and making off with other booty. Yes, because when you or I copy and paste a file, that's exactly the same.
