Newbie and Gumby Cook a Squirrel * 3
    #15674598 - 01/16/12 04:14 PM (4 months, 10 days ago)

This occured a while ago, but I'm surprised to find that I haven't posted it yet.  We set out to kill this groundhog that's been plaguing my Dad's plants for a while and turn it into stew, but we didn't have a trap and a 22 would've been too loud for my suburban setting, so we opted for the pellet gun.  Not more than five minutes later, Gumby's walking up the yard with a dead squirrel by the tail, screaming, "Got one!!".    We looked up how to properly clean it, and of course we failed horribly but eventually managed to get the meat out.  It came out pretty damn good!  I made a nice crispy, spicy batter, and deep fried it into squirrel wings.  The pics are kind of out of order, but you get the picture.

Isn't squirrel supposed to be very high in cholesterol?  Or did I get that from watching christmas vacation?

Looks pretty tasty.

But this pic just looks wrong for some reason.

It said to make a small incision near the "butthole"  (butt-howwwwle)  then grab the tail and peel up.  Well when we grabbed the tail and peeled up, we just ripped the tail clean off.

As shown here:

That's when it was time to improvise.

Eating anything high in cholesterol doesn't necessarily mean that your cholesterol levels will skyrocket.  Your body produces cholesterol by itself, and the shit you consume doesn't just automatically add to your bad cholesterol.  Look up HDL vs LDL.

I'm not too concerened about cholesterol.  I just always hear people say squirrel high in it.

You're talking to a guy who won't use liquid vegetabe oil for deep frying .

peanut oil all the way.  half iquid, half hydrogenated.

What's the texture of that squirrel like?  how's it compare to more common meats

I hate to compare it to chicken, but it's like a lot chewier than chicken, with a bit heavier flavor.  Not a whole lot of flavor alone, but with the right spices, squirrel wings can knock chicken wings out of the water.

LOL.

dude,  you cut inbetween the butthole(around the butthole) and the tail, then gently separate the butt&guts out.

of course you probably realize that now.  you learned the hard way.  it's a good thing you did that on a squirrel and not a large animal for your (first)? time gutting an animal.

Well it said to make an incision then just rip it up and peel the rest apart.  Apparently our incision wasn't wide enough and the tail came clean off.

always more than an incision, basically just cut the butthole out.  goes for most all game.
I can see how that might be a bit easier said that done on a squirrel compared to larger game where there is more room to work with.

great thread title BTW.:yesnod::lol:

seriously. i think other then music... food, is my favorite... thing to construct. i mean, food is like music... only it's practical, plus, you fucking eat it. (and you can scale mountains and levels of awesomeness; different texture and flavor)

it's what living is all about. :yesnod:

i love when people embrace their... taste for food. i never seen a Squirrel cooked but... you fry it in some season flour... it's perfect... like fish and ships or friend chicken... only with Squirrel. awesomeness.

hehe 'looking up how to clean it' that just sounds doomed to fail. haha. Gutting an animal can be tricky if you dont watch someone do it first. But yeah like oregon said, better to fail on a small animal, and not on a deer or something bigger.

I read on how-to.com that if you use a melon baller, or ice cream scoop they work perfectly to scoop out guts without a knife. :seeya:

Tried it once, totally grossed me out. From the way all those little hairs that cling to the meat to the subconscious gag reflex from putting a rodent in my mouth, no matter how tender it was or how it tasted..

that would be some pretty serious skills if someone squirrel hunts with a pistol.

By nature its out of range at all times unless you run around in the city killing the pretty much domestic squirrels.
