I doubt it will happen, but cross-platform play would be the best thing for the next Gen.
doubt it will happen with MS and Sony fighting so hard for market share. It would take a third party broker to make it happen (genius million dollar idea) and enforce performance requirements as well as platform and online protocols, while still allowing each to focus on certain aspects that make them think their console is better than the other.

Hardest thing to do would be to get ps3 to speak the same language. But then if that became the trend then why even have choices in a console.

As far as physical copies of games the only thing I would look forward to is cartridges rather than CDs.
Eventually, gaming might end up like this.
