Wild oyster clone. The makings of a good culture.

So here is the story with this one, because I have been reluctant to release any information, but feel the time is right. Last year while out hiking, I stumbled across a beautiful oyster cluster growing off of half decomposed red alder. With the thought of a delicious dinner in mind, I cast away my hunger and decided on saving this one for some clones. Many agar plates in the future, a few came out on top, with amazing growth.
Using the agar plates, a clean LC was made, and then grain jars were made three days before thanksgiving (US calendar). There they sat, at around 60°F-70°F. Less than a week went by with explosive growth, and then they were ready to spawn.
The tub consisted of 20lbs (dry weight) of chipped big leaf maple, 10 lbs of chipped red alder, 5 lbs of chipped black walnut, and the rest of the tub packed full of straw (maybe 5-10 lbs at the most) everything was pasteurized normally, and there were some minerals and such added (won't talk about that one). Once cooled, it was added in layers with the roughly 3-4 cups of spawn into a "rubber made" tub (not sure on the size). The final weight of the block was roughly 62lbs before any colonization occurred. The block was made on 12-10-11, so today is roughly one month from creation. Here are some pics from 1-1-12 (I got stupid and took a look) I had the tub covered with a blanket to keep it warm and protected, and placed it about 6 feet away from the wood stove in the house. Temps stay nice, and rarely get over 70°F on the blanket surface. It's been one month, and today seemed like a good time to check on it. To my surprise, this is what I found. The block now weight almost 100 lbs. I am not sure what to do, but I think fruiting is in order. (sorry for the blurry pics, I was all excited) and updates will come in time. And yes, the hair was taken off.

"So here is the story ... I stumbled across a beautiful oyster cluster ..." You're a lucky man. This year i have barely found two tiny oysters. (that i'm cloning)
"With the thought of a delicious dinner in mind, I cast away my hunger and decided on saving this one for some clones" A difficult, hard choice. I know.
It seems that you're doing a great work. An impressive growth. Well done. How many jars of spawn have you used?

This was on the 14th. Due to the cold weather, and me being a bit unprepared, Things aren't going as good as they should be. My FC is not quite finished, so that's hindering things a bit.
a bit more fresh air, and higher temps, but it's becoming a challenge with my night temps dropping to 24°F last night. Took them inside for the pics. Still, the results are pretty good for my first attempt at fruiting a wild clone. The smallest cluster is about the size of a large grapefruit.

Thank you everyone for the kind words. The pictures don't do it justice, and I'm not even sure if it's pinning inside the tub. Can't take off the lid without destroying the clusters, so I just gotta let it ride. It's an amazing sight with literally thousands of pins, and more are starting to grow from under the lid. If the results are good, I might clone again and make up lots of LC for anyone wanting the genetics. I'll try to update when I get chances.

Wow., that is awesome!! All of that just forced it's way through the seal of the lid?! Are you going to take the lid off once this first flush matures?

Yes, that's exactly what happened. When I took the blanket off to check it's progress on the 11th, the clusters were already poking out from the lid. The piece of wood pictured was used to compress the block while colonizing, and to use as a stand (my original plan was to fruit as an entire block outdoors). By the looks of the tub now, the block of wood (which is a 12X4 that's about 14" long) is fully colonized on the outside. I might sneak a peak to see if there are pins under the lid.

Well, sadly this grow attempt does not have a happy ending. Over the last few days in my area, there has been lots of snow, ice and wind causing many problems. Power was lost about 4 days ago, so temps in my FC plummeted down to the mid 20's. Not being able to keep up temps or RH, the grow was lost. All the pins started to abort, and the ones that were growing were deformed and stressed.
In the end, about 2 lbs of fresh, slightly mature oysters were harvested, leaving the giant mass of pins behind. All in all, the clusters of pins weighed in at just over 5 lbs. I'm quite disappointed with how things turned out, but there was little that I could do. Removing the clusters was actually very easy. Since they grew out from under the lid, I just grabbed them and broke em off clean. The tub was put outside to go dormant until the weather outside is a bit warmer (maybe a few months). I'll fruit the block again outdoors once spring arrives.
Anyway, here is the last round of pictures until it begins to fruit again. Thanks for all the kinds words everyone, and I will update the thread once things start again. Pardon the dark pictures, they were taken last night while our power was still out.

I did learn a few things. This entire experience was unexpected, as I thought it would take much longer for it to fully colonize, let alone fruit how it wanted to. It will be interesting to see how well it will fruit the next time around. I'm much more of an outdoor cultivator, and still being fairly new with oysters, I will be learning new things for a long time. But the clusters of pins were quite impressive in person. Hard to imagine how it would have looked if things would have gone better.
I was able to use most of the ones that did get decent sized. A few were used for prints (still making a few actually) and the rest went into a venison sausage pasta.
First I cut the oysters into little strips about 1/2" wide. Fried them in some butter, onions and a bit of garlic. Cooked the sausage in a separate pan with some olive oil,(It's very lean) fresh basil and half of a granny smith apple cut into about 1/8th" cubes. Took the sausage out and used what was left in the pan as a base for the sauce, which was a 4 cheese alfredo. Made up some fresh fettuccine noodles, boiled, strained, tossed with some butter and Parmesan, added the now sliced sausage and topped with the sauce. It was one of the better dinners I have made in a long time. Maybe i'll actually write down the recipe and post it if I get the chance.

Actually, I still have all the original plates, minus the one that had the tissue on it. Also still have about a half gallon of the LC I used for this project. I'm gonna try to make it available sometime soon for anyone interested.

I didn't save the metabolites, but rather wanted to save the pin clusters getting totally submerged in them. If I had a way to get the metabolites analyzed and see what they are made of, then I might have saved them. But I sadly don't have the ability to conduct chemical analysis anymore

Some pictures from today. They are starting to move along a bit faster now. We will see what happens. There seems to be some clusters that have a light tan color, and some that have a very deep blue

This little cluster kept getting smashed by one of the handles. They were still pretty small, but decided to cut them off so the don't get destroyed. I might get a few prints from them
