Wow, i didn't know they had all ready announced that they are going to do electric forest festival again in 2012. My next question is if they are going to make it a string cheese headlined festival again or if they are going to just have them play a smaller part and turn it into more of a madison house fest..
Thoughts from people who were there last year?
I went to rothbury 08 and it was amazing but the location is a long ass drive from me.. almost a full 24 hour drive

Yeah rothbury 08 (as i'm sure 09 was too) was definitely worth the drive! Inaugural year of a fresh festival with a great lineup? Couldn't be better..
but damn it's 2012 all ready so that was a little while ago. I need to start getting with the now

Out of those 3? Electric Forest for sure, awesome fest! Ultra if you have the extra money and have never been.
I vend so the spring/summer run will probably be at Wannee, Hangout, Summer Camp, Waka, Roo, All Good, Electric Forest, Bisco & Vibes.

How's the vending thing work out for you? Do you find you have enough freetime to check out the shit you want?
Do you tough it out during the day and then close shop at night and enjoy the festival? or do you work some kind of swing shift thing where at least someone is slangin night and day to optimize business?

water, earlier today they had the lineup so now im like wtf >.< i had seen that they had shpongle and a bunch of others on there.
yeah moneys gonna be tight as i'll be paying for some other people also.
I've heard ultra was sick, a friend went to it. He got robbed. his friend got the shit kicked out of them. and they got lost for hours. Said it was best time of their lives.
As i said im considering elictric as my number one choice so far but keep em coming

It's actually a really sweet deal. We're not official though. There's a few collectives that are trying to get booth's at certain festies so a bunch of artists/vendors can hustle their shit in the same tent but normally I'm one of the guys walking around the campsites with stuff or inside the festival.
I peddle my warez all day when the people I usually want to see aren't on. I usually have it all in my backpack anyway (pins, posters, t-shirts) so it's no biggie if I want to dance a little. I put everything in the tent in the evening and head out to party. It depends on the festy and the lineup...but I'd say average quitting time is 6pm and I'll be up at 12pm to hustle some custies.

I went to ultra in 06 and 09. 06 was fun but 09 blew. Rampant cops worse than suwannee and pretty terrible crowd. Music ends at midnight every night and no one gets more than an hour except Carl cox. A Di need more than an hour to develop his set imo. Plus no camping blows hard. That's half the fun!!!! Miami is insanely expensive too. With the explosion of edm its gonna be frat central. Mehhh.

unfortunately
here in miami the scene is overrun by hard-ass wannabe jits.. the scene went from a type of modern day hippy to something more along the lines of modern day gangster/tough guys... its tragic and perhaps i will never truly appreciate the incessant need for people to be the toughest, coolest guy on the block

I wish I could make it to bisco again. That's where it's at. That whole weekend was fucking insane. If they dispensed with the garbage brostep and their respective fans, that would be the best east coast fest for sure. I'm interested to see how all good will be this year with the new location.

i REALLY wanna go to electric forest this year
the lineup for ultra might be a little better, but the fest is hella expensive including a hotel room and u get kicked out of the festival at like 11 or 12 until the next day and have to fend for yourself for 12 hours
FUCK non-campout festivals, im fucking done with them...id rather stay oin one spot the whole weekend and not have to worry about driving home or to a hotel or sumthing...not only are campout festivals less expensive, but they are more fun and typically have better drugs
this summer i wanna go to EFF, Bisco, and the Big Up, and maybe another smaller festival in upstate NY if they have it again...i def pkan on traveling to colorado to meet a friend who is moving there soon and idk what ill be going there for, but im DEF gonna set it up with some sort of show/festival, def wanna go to Red Rocks

yeah but most people who like dubstep also like house
almost nobody who likes house likes jam bands, and i guess some people who listen to dubstep like some jam bands
but that festival NEVER would have sold out in one day if it wasnt for the house and dubstep...tDB still invites that kinda music bc they want a big crowd and know they cant do it themselves LOL
house is alright, i need mine to be electro house tho...regular house is way too tame for me...its gotta have that dirty grimy bisco feel to it ya know? for example, I think Jack Beats would be a perfect house set for camp bisco

I said brostep like skrillex. Bring in some GOOD dubstep and some GOOD electronica in general and that shit would be on point. I'm soooooooooooooooo tired of people sucking the dicks of these garbage top 20 DJs. How about bring some real fuckin talent? How about don't pay PL and Skrillex and Bassnectar (all suuuuper overrated) a trillion dollars and bring Shpongle back, Ott, Phutureprimitive, Bird of Prey, Freddy Todd, Carl Cox, Sebastien Leger, Mimosa, Pantyraid, Com Truise, Bluetech, Bonobo, Tipper, Tycho and other DJs that are 10000000000000x better than the aforementioned shit triad who get worse every time I see them? Bring back fucking Sound Tribe? Lotus? You're saying people won't pay for that?

Uh... I have to COMPLETELY disagree with everything you said.
I fucking HATE dubstep, with a burning passion. It is the biggest piece of shit I have literally ever heard try to pass itself as genre of music. I would rather listen to top 40s pop.
I also absolutely love house, blues, and jam bands. So no, I don't think that was even remotely an appropriate analysis. Some massive assumptions you're making on nothing.

For real. Btw...they're talking about getting either Daft Punk or Justice to headline with Bisco this year. They'd both be dope but I've heard nothing but rumors about Daft Punk playing a festie for the past two years so I'm not counting on that.
Ultra is almost sold out...if anyone plans on going you better get your tix soon.

Daft Punk seems like it would be hard to pull off logistically, and if any of Deadmau5's drunken ramblings are true, they refuse to do fests because the production they require would not be possible. That would be dope though. I wouldn't mind Justice either. It is shocking how much "popular" edm has taken a nose dive. What the fuck is that Avicii shit (see garbage) I keep hearing? The Americans always ruin everything good.
edit: I blame avicii because he plays in the united states like every fucking month. Therefore, the europeans must hate his presence (understandably).

Avicii productions are amazing dude. I have no idea what you're talking about. He's not a great live DJ though, as I found on NYE, but his productions are top notch.

Stop by Philadelphia and pick me up or we will figure something out, I don't mind driving. I am planning on going this year, but don't know anyone going. It's a 13 hour drive from here.
I might just do that, It would be on my way to MI.

I'm not going to say that sounds "bad" per se; it just sounds bland and cheap.

Then you've never heard it dropped in a club. It's a sick remix, and everyone knows the original song. It's pretty fucking grimy, and everyone gets into it and LOVES it. Always a smash hit IME - all 3 DJs I saw on NYE dropped it, and so did Alesso when I saw him...

I'm sure it works well in the club. However, I still stand by my point. Cheap "happy" music works well when everyone is rolling face. That doesn't make that music good. Alesso is pretty good. From the limited amount I've heard, his production is pretty on point.

Electric forest was fucking amazing last year, definitely going this year. Probably gonna try for summercamp again this year, but not sure, it's growing a little too big for its britches, last year was sooo crowded.....

I wanna try and make it back to Wakarusa this year. All depends on the lineup. I was there last year and had a blast.

Id also like to make it to suwannee for another fest. Maybe Wannee.
This is Bear Creek

If they dispensed with the garbage brostep and their respective fans, that would be the best east coast fest for sure. I'm interested to see how all good will be this year with the new location.
it would also be one of the smallest
take away dubstep and electro house and only a quarter of the people show up
NOBODY goes to bisco for tDB anymore LOL
He didn't say anything about taking away house, just dubstep - house is the shit.
yeah but most people who like dubstep also like house
almost nobody who likes house likes jam bands, and i guess some people who listen to dubstep like some jam bands
but that festival NEVER would have sold out in one day if it wasnt for the house and dubstep...tDB still invites that kinda music bc they want a big crowd and know they cant do it themselves LOL
house is alright, i need mine to be electro house tho...regular house is way too tame for me...its gotta have that dirty grimy bisco feel to it ya know? for example, I think Jack Beats would be a perfect house set for camp bisco
Dude, Camp Bisco did not sell out in one day. Where on earth did you get that idea?

Don't have to be rolling to enjoy it. I've gone to house shows sober and had an amazing time. It's all about the vibe. When you're on the d-floor the energy is incredible, and you feel like a single organism with everyone there.
BTW that mix of sweet dreams is pretty dark, I wouldn't call that "cheap happy music" at all...

he is either talking about "beyond wonderland" or "nocturnal wonderland".
both are presented by insomniac. i love/hate them. Nocturnal last year was so amazing, but $3 for a bottle of water. come on. at ACL they gave out free water. thats how it should be.

wow that is just crazy. with any festival, especially with an electronic festival, water should be cheap, for the sake of safety. I saw far too many people being hauled away for medical attention.

In Canada you absolutely have to provide water to people who need it, although not in a bottle, and most people are not aware of this.

UNLESS daft punk does a festival tour, you will never see Daft Punk at camp bisco, are you kidding me? daft punk is sick but def not Bisco's style
and justice isnt gonna headline bisco either...bisco has been headlined by the same band for the last 10 years lol

In other festie news...Waka Phase I line-up is out. Looks like Weir, Robinson & Greene are taking their acoustic show on a nice little festival tour.

I just hope it's not as hot as last year. It was my first time going but from what I gathered it was unusually hot on Mulberry Mountain last June.

Hahahaha, that's one way to do it! I always wondered how non-rich people did EDC without coming back shit broke. Right on!

To get the full experience of tripping in the woods, you have to be alone with no distractions. But that's my own personal opinion. I like the drug to take it's full effect, but everyone has their own priorities.
I fell like external stimuli can distract or detract from the experience, though it can certainly also add to it. All I can say is go in with a positive mindset. I still look forward to the day I get to trip in the Sherwood forest

EFF is promoted by insomniac and those guys are like the best in the US...so much stage production, just imagine those woods...and the lineup last year was pretty much perfect for my EDM taste...cant wait to see that lineup, think it came out in Feb last year
i saw the waka lineup like last week, i think thats the weakest they have had in a few years imo
camp bisco is always an option just cuz its so close to me

Trust me my friend, I am not forsaking any other festies. At the moment I am supporting family members who are about to enter college and other things. I just have time for one festie and the money for one at the moment. Understand i plan on spending a grand worth for this festie however. Also, i may go burning man later in the year

I've spent a grand at a festival, but I probably made like 5 times that. I'm missing waka this year to unexpectedly start my family. Rage it for me.

Family is the most important thing in my life. Wakarusa happens every year and this wedding is only going to happen once. No dice, but its all right because there are many other festivals all through out the summer. Waka does look really really tasty so far, and I guarantee they are going to add sts9 to the list later today

Meh, I plan on having the experience with me for the rest of my life as it will be my first time there. In my opinion it is worth it. What else will we have at the end of our lives if not our own minds to indulge in.

they added a second lineup announcement today
added diplo, borgore, some jam bands
idk man, that lineup is looking pretty fucking awesome
for me i got Kaskade, Slightly stoopid, Borgore, Diplo, Gramatik, Ott, Minnesota, datsik, porter robinson, savoy, le castle vania, and nervo...idk thats pretty legit
tix mite be a lil overpriced tho, but its worth it

Snowball has a garbage lineup. It's a bunch of subpar edm+mimosa and snoop dogg. Bassnectar and Rusko are way over the hill. Fuckin retire them and split them fundage to better, more deserving people. And please refrain from the same "but bassnectar changed mah lifffeeeee" trite garbage. If you think that, your aesthetic taste is questionable.

Getting a little worked up on other peoples music choice, are we? hehe just playing. im a fan of bassnectar, but i probably wont go see him next time he comes around. seen him a few times and im happy with it, dont want to ruin that with subpar shows.
I checked snowball the other day. They have one of my favorite bands there, deer tick. pretty high up on the list too, those guys are getting there! But they are a folk group in the middle of an edm fest lol

First of all, the fox theatre is not in denver. It's in boulder, co. and that video is too funny!
Check out the lizard derp at 1:08 taunted by travis, and then the underage derpie girls at 2:20.

Does anyone know of any smaller more intimate festivals or gatherings that would be worth attending ?
Damn so many great lineups hard to plan and choose which to attend and skip over.
Anyone have positive experience volunteering for these larger festivals at all ? Please share if you do.

What type of music are you into? Re:generation fest (STS9's fest) is set to announce their lineup soon. Holds about 8-10,000 people. Nedfest in Nederland, CO is my favorite fest every year! Super chill bluegrass festival held in a tiny weed growing town of 500 people. Festival attracts around 2,000. What part of the country are you in?
Also... Jambase is a good place to find music going on in your area.

Sonic Bloom! In Georgetown, CO...
http://www.sonicbloomfestival.com/
Small, perfect temperature, great people and even better scenery; absolutely beautiful place for a festival...it's a great little festie if you're into the elctronic stuff. Workshops, performances, tons of art and dope glitchy beats. Line-up isn't out yet but last years was pretty good (EOTO, Tipper, Vibesquad, Random Rab, Heyoka, Gramatik, etc...).
Also check out Dexfest if you're anywhere near Tennessee.

Camp euphoria in Iowa is also a great small festival on private land. Hell there's probably some fests that go on in your neck of the woods if you look around

I volunteered at Electric last year and had a great experience. I did not have to work during any of the shows that I requested not to miss and I got one of my shifts with my friend that I asked to work with. My other shift (12 hour shift) was from 11pm to 11am. They called me "the sleeper". My job was to sleep in the merch tent, aka security even thought there were paid security out front of the tent all night, I just had to sleep in it. Ended up snaggin a shirt, so I ended up with a free ticket and a t shirt, don't get much better than that. I plan on working again this year at electric and already bought my summer camp ticket a while back.

Thanks for sharing.
I'm curious though did you have to close your eyes and pretend to sleep or actually watch people to make sure they didn't steal nothing? Couldn't the people selling merch watch that?

I was supposed to actually sleep. They told me to go back to my tent and grab whatever I wanted to sleep with. I ended up putting ear plugs in at like 1am because I was tired as shit. The chick that ran the tent left a few things there that were about 5 feet from me. When she came back and got her stuff I didn't even wake up.
I think I was just more of a deterrent such that if someone came if they would be like "shit! there is someone in the tent" and leave. I honestly that it was pretty stupid, but I was not complaining.
I got 12 our of my 18 hours out of the way that way. And I only had to stay till like 9:30. Plus my other shift that was supposed to be 6 hours ended up being about 3.5. So out of the 18 hours total I signed up to work I only ended up doing 15 of them. edit - just reread you post and I think you thought that the merch tent was open the whole time I was there. It was closed while I was sleeping so I was the only person in there at the time. Just a security guard sitting out from making sure no one got in.
And Tomorrowland looks like an awesome time. The trailer they have out for it makes it look so damn cool.

My buddy had to do that for one of his shifts. I met him in the venue and juts chilled for an hour and then his "supervisor" came by and told him to walk around to make it look like he was doing something just in case her "supervisor" came by to check up on them. He said he emptied two trash cans in the 4 hours he was working that shift.
The hardest shift I saw people doing is rolling big ass hay bales around to try and cover up the soaked ground from the rains the night before.

I think last year was so crowded because of all the mud. People were packing into the dryer areas instead of being more dispersed.

I went to Scamp 2 years back and had the time of my life. Superb vibes, great music, just an all around great atmosphere. I highly recommend going. Didn't make it last year due to me being in a wedding, but I will be there again this year.

Electric forest in MI is mind blowing. The forest is completely magical and completely worth the trip. Plus, three night of string cheese incident. Not did they kill it last year, but they really cacre about the festival and put wayyy more into it than any other festival ive experienced. They're the reason the forest is nuts just hear them jamm "Joyful Sound," live: http://youtu.be/l4rbbS2hhRY

just to be clear here, SCI just headlines the festival ok
Insomniac Events are the promoters and THEY are the reason the forest and the production is at a top notch level and they are the reason the lineup is awesome

Wasn't trying to give SCI the sole responsibility of the success of eforest, just respecting the fact that they care and put effort back into communities and areas they play at. They're not some snobby headlining act that just wants to sell tickets. They also want the experience to be memorable and magical. No dis to insomniac events or the promoters. A great festival is OBVIOUSLY a collaboration of passion and excitement from ALL parts that create it.

The lighted forest existed at rothbury music festival one and two, and I dont think insomniac was the promoter at that time. I thought it was a Madison House thing back then.
SO maybe insomniac/madison house is currently responsible for the lighting of the forest but the idea was born back a while ago under madhouse.
and this:

ive heard that the forest for EFF is way cooler and set up way better than when it was done with rothbury...there are obviously different promoters from rothbury to EFF...just cuz its in the same spot doesnt mean EFF has ANY assocation with rothbury

I guess you missed the part about madison house being part of the production of both rothbury and electric forest festival.
Go to
http://www.rothburyfestival.com/
and look at the bottom right of the page and look where there's little icons that say "madison house presents" and "AEG"
Now.. go to the bottom left corner of
http://www.electricforestfestival.com/
and notice how there's two icons
one says "insomniac" and the other says "madison house presents"
I won't challenge you with any more reading comprehension.. Carry on

Gnarnia looks pretty dope. Sweet location in the NC mountains and looks to be a chill ass festie with some good music. They've been announcing the acts on their facebook page for about a week now and the initial line-up is fucking legit:
Emancipator Tipper Break Science Beats Antique 7 walkers Gift of gab Govinda Vibesquad Polish Ambassador Eliot Lipp 12th planet Afroman Paper Diamond Mark Farina Papadosio Toubab Krewe ESKMO Midnite Rising Appalacia Zoogma

Definitely trying to hit this up at the end of the summer.

I've never been to a festival and looking at it probably wont go this summer either. Am I missing out much?
If I go I'd prolly go alone cause I can't think of anyone that would come with me.
Do they search you for drugs on the entrance?

Most places do not search too hard to find anything. As long is it is not in the open you don't have to worry. What most are looking for are weapons/beer bottles, or nitrous tanks.
And each festival I have been to I like to describe as an experience. An experience that is hard to explain as it is different than anything else I have ever done, but awesome none-the-less.

I suspect I'm missing out, do you think I'll be able to score some LSD cause all that I could potentially bring there would be MDMA, speed, weed and probably 25i.
I'm in the UK btw. Going alone? Good/bad idea?

If you love meeting new people and can make quick friends than you'll do just fine. It's really not that hard to make new friends at a festival because everyone is usually vibing pretty awesomely, but its nice to have a core group of friends to meet back up with after you go out on little mini adventures throughout the course of the big adventure.
There is a lot of down time at camping festivals so if you go by yourself become good friends with your neighbors cause you'll want to chill out and chilling out by yourself in a crowd of thousands of people sounds like a bummer to me. Find a festival with music you actually are stoked to see, don't just go to one to do drugs. You'll have a much better time that way.
Edit: and yes you are definitely missing out! festivals are like the icing on the cake of life

ok well im sure i could take the amount of money they spent on ultra and RAGE 2 festivals and have a better time
id take EFF or Bisco (2 festies that are heavily influenced by EDM) over a fest like ultra or EDC or Electric zoo simply cuz ur in one spot the whole time..instead of going to clubs after u get kicked out at 11 or 12, theres just latenight sets, and they are free, and you dont have to dress up and mess up nice clothes...you can get as spun as you fucking want and not have to worry about driving or really figuring anything out
and have these kids even raged camp out festivals before? sadly too many people at ultra have not experienced a camp out fest and dont understand the difference btwn them
id go to ultra if its free or real cheap but it isnt and there are way better festivals out there...plus the people at a place like ultra suck, just a bunch of bros and disease infested sluts who want attention (see the girl humping the tree video from ultra last week)
camp out festivals beat the shit out of non camp out festivals...anyone who has been to a few of both will tell you this...its a fact

at fests like ultra you cant even bring in food or drinks either, how bullshit is that?
at camp out fests you can pretty much bring whatever you want into the concert area
honestly i dont drink beer or wine, so at a place like those festivals im stuck with only drugs...at camp out fests i can bring any liquor with me that i want as long as its not in a glass bottle
non camp out festivals are just way too fucking expensive for schwag services and bullshit stipulations
if u got expendable money then i guess this convo is irrelevant, but im on a budget like most festival go'ers and i can only afford so much and im not willing to throw that money away on sumthing shitty when i can spend half that money somewhere else and have WAY more fun

Ya, went with experienced campers. Ultra is really one of a kind. That video of the girl and tree is my only complaint with ultra... Real ravers wouldn't have youtubed that. It's a shame, but its a mixed crowd... Sexy crowd tho. My friends come from all over the world for it year after year.

um ok u agree with all i said tho?
u can have WAY more fun at a real festival, one that u camp out at and stay at for 3 entire days and dont have to drop at least a grand, moreso like 1500 tho at the least
thats assuming you get a house/hotel for the weekend/week, ticket, transportation, drugs, and clubs for afterparties
if ur nto raging it like that then u provly shudnt even be there
i just hate the idea that they kick you out, sure after that ur gonna see a lot of people from ultra around miami but at a camp out fest its just fun to go around and meet new people and have converstaions with them at 6 in the morning when everyones spun out...its fun to be in the crowd and its not really like that after 11 or 12 at a place like ultra
and i cant imagine the crowd at ultra being cool at all

Camp fests I wouldn't say are more fun, its a different animal. The part your Hung up on is the perceived value, imo. Ultra comes in at about $2500 per person, flying from out of town sharing a hotel with 2 after/pre parties. You could spend $10,000 and not do everything. Some people don't even walk through the gates, opting for the other music week festivities. It's a riot really.
Campouts are going to be way cheaper and more accessable, but if u can go to ultra ur in for the time of ur life. I love the mingling at campouts, but the people are def not all cool. I haven't had bad experiences, but I'm constantly paranoid about the tent and or cops, wierdos following my girl friends around, and lack of hygiene. Lol. Still its all for fun tho, just two different animals.

well ultra is for the mega rich and im not trying to party with douchebags like that, like im really not
i hear the crowd at ultra is pretty horrible
and thats why u go to festivals on private campgrounds, soooooo much better, fuck UCs and getting arrested at a festival
i just think ultra is extremely inefficient on money if u only got enough money for one or 2 fests, then ultra is not for you
id MUCH rather go to a festival filled with wooks and dirty people than custy bros and stupid sluts eating meth laced rolls and thinking they are bomb
camp out fests u get way more bang for your buck and honestly i think u hear better music too
ultra has too much gay trance and generic house music...at a fest like that if u go to the right sets, you can potentially see the same track being played 10 times by 10 different DJs...i want more electro and glitch and dubstep and psychill and stuff that isnt just fuckign house music

Geeze you sound pretty pissed that you can't afford to go to Ultra. That sucks man. You know lots of people (like myself) LOVE house, and slightly less so trance, and think dubstep is abysmal shit.

Ya, call me a homo if you must, but i reaallllly liked seeing sander, ferry, armin, gareth, and atb Back to back to back to back to back to back.
Im more of a house guy, but I think it sucks seeing trance sets at top 40 clubs, so the only other real place to enjoy it, for me, is warehouse clubs in big cities (which never draw that kind of lineup.) Finding a good trance crowd anywhere is fucking expensive IMO.

Ultra is fun. Lots of hot bitches, great city...but I'm not as big of a house/trance type person either so it's just not worth it for me to go down every year. That and they seem to get a lot of the same headliners I've seen before or that already come through my city throughout the year. When I did go I did notice quite a bit of overlap in song selection like someone was saying above. I say you gotta go at least once...but I'd much rather go to a sweet camping festie myself. You really don't have to worry about anything like you do at a hotel fest. And I really like camping, the freedom it gives you and the 'headier' vibe.

Festivals without camping aren't real festivals imo. They are just multiple concerts all day for a few days ha. For me, camping at festivals and hanging out at your campsite is over half of the fun of festivals, music is just a plus at that point.
Chicago has a few 'fests' each year, but having to leave each night and drive/take a train to a hotel just isn't for me. To each his own though.
