A new year means a new Official Texas Thread.

you got a few of the same. Some panaeolus papilionaceus numbers 2,3,4,7,10,15,16,and 18. 9 like it could be a stropharia species.

No spore print for #9. The caps would have been too dry to give a print anyway. If I recall correctly they were fruiting from the ground which could very well mean off of older decomposed bovine dung.
Thanks for the Panaeolus species level ID. I didn't know about the reclassification of the other former species under papilionaceus.

Just recently moved to H town. I'm from the panhandle of Texas where absolutely no hunting occurs. Although cultivation does have a way. I'm extremely happy to be here as a part of the forum I love Entheogens I am a devoted follower of T. Mckenna, P. Stamans, ect... Any help getting started is greatly appreciated In Lak'ech.

ahh yes good thread. Thanks so much for sharing!
I'm digging number 9 and am wishing I could have a spore print of that lil buggar. Looks like it might have red/rust spores. Kind of like the red down under pan cyan. Am I wrong? Anyway, looks extra yummy.
Pans are by far the most interesting and exciting to me.
Peace, Frizzie

Nice finds Naum, I just moved into my new house in Austin, got some great areas and parks to check out here. Been raining here so hopefully the weather will warm up a bit and I can check out my surroundings.

P. cyanescens fruit nearly year round here as long as moisture and humidity are sufficient.
P. cubensis can be found in some of the counties near San Marcos, but this early in the year I bet your prospects for P. cyanescens are much better.
Good luck!

The P can stand for either Panaeolus or Psilocybe. I knew you were talking about Panaeolus as they are the only one that is endemic to Texas.
Your chances of finding them are better than cubensis out there in this weather.
Those counties are good. If you are willing to drive a bit Bastrop, Lee, and Caldwell are typically wetter and more humid than the surrounding counties in my experience.

Frizzie: From upthread: "No spore print for #9. The caps would have been too dry to give a print anyway."
I'm sure it's not Panaelous cyanescens. It's funny you mention the RDU mutation though. One of the caps from #12 had red colored gills but printed normal. wowitch17 found one a couple of years back too.
@Algolagniac: 13 is driving me nuts. I've seen that species in one of my books, but I've had no luck finding it. They was definitely on cow dung so I don't think that's it unfortunately.

I know most of them and I've been meaning to go back through and label them, but I haven't.
I'd like to know #1 which I'm pretty sure is the same as the last. A new lawn mushroom to me. Stem is very fragile and the mushrooms are pretty ephemeral too.

I know I'm about 13 days late on this, but ...
1. Bolbiiuts vitellinus 2. Laccaria sp. probably laccata 3. Some sort of gasteroid fungus. Probably a dead and old Lycoperdon. 4. I have no earthly clue. It's too dead and dry for me to identify. 5. Gymnopus dryophilus 6. Another Laccaria sp. it appears by the white spore deposit. 7. You have a thing for finding Laccarias! 8. Pluteus sp. probably cervinus 9. See 2,6, & 7 10. These actually Look like G. junonius to me! Nice find. 11. & 12. I can't give a guess as I can't see any gills. but 12 is being snacked upon by bugs! 13. Looks thick enough to be Trametes versicolor but I can't see any pore on the bottom so it could be a Stereum. 14. Bolbitius vitellinus

Good calls though our numbering is off.
I suspect 4 is the same as 5. I went hunting for a non-dried specimen when I found the dried ones and I think I found it, but maybe not.
10=11=12=G. junonius

It's some sort of Solanum maybe Solanum carolinense but the fruits are not as round as they should be. You're looking for the wrong thing if you're mistaking those for cubes even at a distance, but they can look like Gymnopilus from afar.

Could the could've myc. be diseased or just not producing because its so early in the year or what? I've been out looking every day its been above 55. this is a pick of the land. Any ideas?

i've been steadily finding 1 or 2 cubes each trip out to the field. i've been cutting them instead of pulling them out so i hopefully i haven't ruined any mycelium out there.
the mosquitoes seem to be multiplying faster, though. longsleeves and repelant.

Nice field sir.no actives for me either yet, but definite mycelium growth. Went poking around a few cow patties and found fuzzy white mycelium in every one. Good sign? I think so.

We plan to look tomorrow. It has been raining for about 3 days here off and on, and the next week, temps will not get below 57 for the low. Hopefully, we will at least find some white fuzzy if not shrooms. Will post pics if we find anything. In Northeast Texas.
Edit: Highs have been low 80s consistantly.

No finds. But we saw a lot of fuzz, so thats always a good sign. How long does it take for mushrooms to grow on average? In particular, cubes.

I found a few as well. Not very many, though. I would take pics but I ended up just tearing them up and tossing them into various locations that nearby that looked suitable for cincts. It was less than 10 anyway, and they were small. Last season at this time I was finding a lot more but hopefully this rain will keep up. I could use a trip...

Just wanted to say hi, I just joined the forum and I'm looking forward to hunting my little magic friends. I've cultivated before, thought not very well, always have a mold issue. Thought I'd try hunting this year, and look forward to some good finds. I'll post anything interesting I come across.
A couple years ago I found an Amanita Muscaria (I'm 99% sure) out in a park in west houston. Anybody else seen this around? I can post a pic if anyone's interested.
Always open to meeting new people with a shared interest, so if anyone wants to get a beer and hang out, let me know.

Muscaria are relatively rare in these parts but they exist. Cubes abound though in the Summer after rainfall. Make a friend who has land with cattle. The area east of Houston is excellent for hunting cubes.

that's a good sign man... sandwich the stem in between 2 pieces of corrugated cardboard. boil the cardboard first, to remove the glue. place the stem on the cardboard (the rippled piece) and fold over. place inside a tupperware container. poke a hole about the size of a quarter for gas exchange and cover it with medical tape. spray about once to twice a week. you should see mycelium in a couple of days.

Hows it going guys? I live in austin and have been dying to go out and look for some mushrooms. Especially with all this wet/warm weather that we have been having. I just always feel sketchy driving around looking for fields with cows that I could explore. I searched for some outside of McMahan on some friends land and actually found a shit load of non-active mushrooms lol.
mod edit: Asking for locations is not allowed.

Man I can't anything in austin but inky caps and non active pans.
Every field I hunt is just...dead.
May come hit you up on that offer naum. Been so busy at work I'm only able to hunt at night....ontop of that my preassure cooker is dead.
Ugh!!! I want some shrooms! Tired of dealing with Molly and Lucy!

Yall need to be patient! Not all fields produce actives. You need to look around to more than one field. Be safe! When I stopped at one of my fields, from my car, I saw actives in the field. Having non actives in a field is a good sign for the field. You may just need a little more experience. For copes, it took me awhile to know what I was hunting. The cubes are a different story. What ever the situation is, post your finds and lay them out in an orderly fashion so that the trusted ad-visors can critic your finds until you know. REMEMBER: the shrooms need to bruise blue. That is one of the most important factors. Also be respectful of the field you are in including animals, trash etc. If you can get permission to be there than do it! With all of the rain we have had thru Texas & the Gulf Coast, there is going to be a lot of actives to pick. GOOD LUCK! BE CAREFUL & RESPECTFUL!!!!

To be honest with you, none of that looks like bruising. It just looks like spore deposits. Not trying to be a downer, but I think you have Panaeolus antillarum. Hopefully I am wrong.

Thanks for your input man, I know you are just looking out for me. I should have posted better pictures of the bruising. But I am positive these are Copelandia cyanescens. Look how similar they are to some blue meanies I found in the same area a few months back http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15027847 The stems on those meanies in the 3rd and 4th pics in that thread show no bruising either. But the same mushrooms a few minutes later (pics 7&8) showed their true bruising color.
The reason the cut end of the stems in the second pic (of my earlier post on this thread) dont show bruising is because that picture was taken about only 1 minute after I cut them. They showed heavy blue bruising about 5-7 minutes later. The stem in the center of the caps in the last picture shows how dark the bruises turned.

Nah those are Panaeolus cyanescens, P. antillarum is whiter and chunkier.

None of them are actives, and that may be a good thing since now I know precisely who you are and who went hunting with you
I see several inky caps, maybe some Psathyrella, that hard one on the tree is maybe a Fomitopsis or Ganoderma applanatum due to brown staining on the pore surface. That fuzzy one you were rubbing the top of is Polyporus arcularius, the big ones after that are Pluteus.

Looks edible, from Amanita section Vaginatae. But pics of the underside and the base of the stem are key here.

That break in the stem almost looked like an annulus for a second. Definitely a Russula though.

hello everyone I'm new to this forum although I have been reading posts and researching for quite a while now I do still consider myself a noob, and unfortunately for some reason I cannot upload pictures my files are within the limits of size and their .jpg. So without pictures I'm not sure how you'll be able to help me, I am pretty sure that I have found Copelandia cyanescens in south east texas. They are growing from cow dung. the largest 1 right now has a stem of about 2 inches and a cap with a diameter of about 3 inches. the caps and stems are a pale brown and the gills are a grayish brown. I'm currently waiting on a spore print but when I pulled off the shroom spores fell on the stem wich was wet and made a black residue so I'm assuming the spores print is going to be black. now I have read about Copelandia cyanescens and some say the blueing effect in some is super intense and in others is almost absent. now my specimen is not blueing except maybe a little bit on the stem, so I guess what I want to know are there any look alikes that could be dangerous? thank you all for any help you can give I hope to have pictures uploaded soon.

That actually looks like Panaeolus cinctulus. Wait for someone more knowledgeable though. You need about 30 times that number to have a good time though

In general if you want a response from a TI you should make your own ID request thread instead of asking here.
I really should trash this thread or heavily edit it and add a rule about no ID requests...

Any finds this week? With the rain last friday, near Houston at least, and the beautiful weather I would think they are growing right now. Unfortunately, my family sold our ranch a few years ago so I have nowhere to safely go hunting. Been growing my own.

I've been curious about hunting for mushrooms lately (1st post), decided to take a stroll through some woods near my house and spotted these.
They look very similar to active mushrooms ive seen on the web but cant be sure, I'm doing a "print" on one and will look in the morning..
I'd be interested to hear any speculation as to what they could be.
thanks!

It is a coprinoid mushroom growing from "ozonium" aka orange-ish basal mycelium which really narrows it down. Cool find, but not active. My speculation is that you found Coprinellus domesticus.

YAY DFW! Ill be hunting the next week and post what i come across! It will be my second hunt! My first was TOO dry... plus i only searched a feild about 5 min from my house. After pulling up google maps and scrolling around my area, i have discovered that i live around ALOT of feilds and woods.. I also discovered that 2 or three miles from my house is a professional race horse breeding place( its named somthing like that..) and a mile OR less from that, is a Theriputic Riding place. Wish me luck! I wish you all luck =). -Trippy

No luck , i did find afew old half dry cow patties. I brought some home and put them in a heavily shaded area of my yard, put some mulching leaves and decaying wood around and on top of them. Do you guys think i will have any luck?

Hey guys, i went looking around in my yard and stumbled on this little guy.
1.
(Im pointing where i picked it.)
2.And this is somthing pinning at the bottom of my uncles garden.
1.Discription:
Stem:White, then bruised a yellowish-tanish color.
Cap:Etimated to be about 2 cm in diameter. A greyish-tanish color(kinda depends on the light) Had indentions on top inbetween where gills are under underneath. In the center it has a brownish-orange spot.
Gills: Connected to the stem, kinda spaced apart, black.
Spore: This was my first attempt at a spore print.(I failed, i pushed too hard and made it a pancake....)There was only one in that spot. Im guessing black because the gills where black. Also it left kinda a dark smudge... But its not enuff to go off...
After looking around i would ID it as Coprinus plicatilis.
2.Description:
Brown/tan pins..(All i can see so far.)
Im sorry i have a crappy camera.I just figured out how to take alittle better of pictures with it so hopefully my next pictures will be better.
Any ideas?
I will deffinatly be looking for more! Good luck you guys:)!

I made my judgement based on the picture and his description. It appears that it is deliquescing and his evidence kinda corroborates this with,
Quote:
Also it left kinda a dark smudge...
I didn't read that he pressed the mushroom down hard and that that could have caused the smudge.

The Cubes:
The Copes:
Copes lined up. Note the bruised stems!

Another failed day of hunting idk if it's too dry or its just not the right season right now in killeen texas and I've kinda wondered if the cows have to be eating a certain food for anything to grow on this field because they are not fed anything they just graze the weeds and grasses in this area the is cow patties everywhere thousands over hundreds of acres of fields the only signs of mushrooms were three puff balls and I walked for miles and miles all day so if anyone has any tips please help maybe I should go to some other farmers field and ask if I can check his out I just dont know what too look for like to find cubes does the field have to be a grass field ir is dirt and weeds ok or do you just need the poop and the right season and cubes will grow on it even if the poops on cement?

Aminita? Growing under a beech tree, but also closely to an oak. Last shot shows red bruising. Awaiting spore print, assuming white.
Found growing in oak debris, hidden in tall grass. awaiting spore print.

#1 - First thought was Macrolepiota rachodes, but I think the taxonomy has changed it would likely be considered allied with Chlorophyllum olivieri #2 - Not sure. Looks like young Clitocybe nuda, but check the spore print color to narrow it down and don't eat anything unless you have positively identified it 100%. Right habitat and right time of year. #3 - Agaricus very likely campestris - What does it smell like?

#1 I have no idea, some TI said Lepiota. I'm wicked new to taxonomy and got thrown off by the universal veil remnants. #2 I think are some sort of clitocybe. was told to check for stem consistency (i.e. fibrous or chalk like) at first i thought chalk like, but i checked some more i found growing and they definitely have a fibrous stem. #3 had no noticeable smell, but I suffer from allergies and smelling isn't my strong suit. there was, however, yellow staining in the stem and cap, turning to brown and fading slightly. So my best guess is agaricus xanthodermus

When in doubt throw it out. A. xanthodermus usually has a fairly unmistakable unpleasant odor. That being said most of the Agaricus I found in your specific locale were xanthodermus.
Keep on hunting. It's one of the best times of the year for edibles down here.

Of course! I live in the middle of nowhere and am surrounded by nothing but forest with the occasional meadow, so I'm out almost every day before work This cold front is invigorating, I love this time of year!

Coprinus disseminatus.
More Lepiota.
This weird thing was found growing on an oak tree near the base.
Boletus?
Unfortunately these got crushed and I was unable to get a print. Found growing in cedar debris. Other than that, It's looking wonderful all around.
