Fooman, I don't have a freezer at my disposal. Should I leave it outside (in NY) or should I leave it in the basement?

Is the manure prepastuerized? I've had good luck storing prepasteurized stuff in mycobags (with a filter patch) for long periods of time in a cool, dark closet. If the manure is dry you can store it in a breathable bag like a potato sack indefinitely. If it's pastuerized already I would go the mycobag route and just check the manure when you're ready to use it for any signs of mold or weird smells (or glowing from radiation ). Worse case scenario the poo goes bad and you lose a free bag of it.

HMC sent me a bag of their compost a long time ago and I had a bunch of other things going on at the time so I threw the box in a closet and forgot about it. Over a year later I found the box and opened it up thinking that I would find a moldy mess, but the compost actually looked, smelled and most importantly WORKED great.

This indicates it was sterilized, not pasteurized.

I bet that the basement will do nicely, though I have not had to do this yet.

(I am thinking that it is pretty cold where you are)

Very cold is good for mold control too.  ...and I also bet that the bag
that the material is in is strong.  (confirm)  Do keep it dry.

I envy you.  I would love to try some commercial stuff, but make my own.

Good luck OP,

JD

You know, I'm not sure what they did to the compost but like I said it worked really well. I'm guessing the fact that it was left undisturbed in the box it shipped in also played a role.

RR thanks for the help with the thread, and I apologize for my OP. I did mean pasteurize. It's Manure Based Mushroom Substrate from Out-Grow that comes all ready to go in 5lb mycobags.

I've heard people say a cool, dark closet so many times but what temp would you say a cool closet is around?

Just leave it in the bags it comes in.

Cool dark closet would probably be around 60F.

Really anything room temperature or below.

Just don't put it in a warm place like on top of the fridge or next to the water heater.

The kind of place you'd keep potatoes or similar
