Kadang mushrooms...

Today I saw something new to me in the asia store: Kadang mushrooms...
Well, what are Kadang mushrooms? The Latin name is Lentinus polychrous, not to confuse with Lentinus tigrinus! The mushrooms are from Thailand, so I guess it's a subtropical species.
It's a pleasant-tasting, spicy mushroom, and I will clone it and start a cultivation attempt.

Thank you for the link Sparkle.
I like his style. I cook like this, by feel more than formula.
...and that recipe is going onto the recipe threads immediately! ;0)
Take care,

Very interesting, must be a relative to shiitake (lentinula edodes) as shiitake was formerly known as lentinus edodes until recently. Does it taste at all like shiitake?

Yes, the taste is very spicy.
And it is not only an edible, but also a medicinal mushroom, containing bioactive compounds for cancer prevention:

Thanks! According to this paper, there are six Lentinus species in Southeast Asia:

This is very interesting
I love the link to the thai mushroom grower. I wonder how he keeps the humidity up in that tent?

Nice! There are some local Cambodian and Laotian markets, for which there's a lot of overlap with Thailand for food and ingredients. I'm going to look for this mushroom, too, and if I find it, attempt a clone.

If a culture was successfully obtained, would you grow using the same methods as shiitake? I'm curious how this will turn out.

Yes, I think a mixture of 80% sawdust (Beech) and 20% wheat bran should work fine.

I would definitely start off with plain sawdust, as a baseline.
I have gotten good fruits from similar blocks of edodes.

I just got back from one of the better Laotian markets in town. No dried mushrooms besides shiitake and wood ears. Some canned, but that doesn't help.
Sporulator, when you get your Kadang mushrooms cloned, please let us know. Some of us (me!) would love to get a culture of it. I've got a list of other Southeast Asian Lentinus and Termitomyces, and am scouring the Internet for a source of any of them dried.

Cloned!
It's a subtropical species, but it colonized the agar within 4 days at 71 ̊ F in my kitchen.
