guess the rock!

http:// i'm starting this thread in spirit of the guess the plant thread, in hopes that it'll do as well and be as fun. if you guess correctly and get confirmation from the poster, you get to choose a rock to identify. you must guess the location the rock came from and the type of rock. please only post rocks with clues and details which make it identifiable, and know the origin. don't just post a simple ugly rock.

I suck at guessing the plant. I'm probably even worse at guessing the rock.
Looks like quartz covered with some kind of iron ore.

nope, it has a name. it is a well known form of quartz though, and iron oxide does cause the red. it's a very famous and sought after material.
also, the red is not on the outside only. this picture is of a cut slab.

google is a good place to start. the very general term for this stone gets it's name from the drillo river in sicily, which in ancient times had a different name that sounds similar to the general term(not the name i'm looking for).

River drillo used to be the Acate. So maybe Agate. I see some polished onyx that looks similar but the bands seem much too even.

not carnelian agate. rocks are always good to know. if i can get more people interested in rockhounding, then i've done some good for the rock community. there are as many species and varieties as there are plants and fungi.

Baker ranch agate. Mind you I am a geological noob, so have patience with me.
Seriously, some of the textures and colors on these agates are just mind blowing. I can see some good synergy between geology and psychedelics.

you're close, very close. eagle rock was actually an extremely close hint, like across the road. maury mt is about 20 or 30 miles farther east. it's closer to lucky strike than richardson's.
well, maybe not literally across the road, but very close.

extremely psychedelic stuff, yes! you should see some of the folks that come into my booth at faerieworlds high on the goods. alot of them have never actually looked at rocks other than just in passing. one guy's friends even said he slept cuddled up with a big piece of obsidian he bought from me.
baker ranch is near demming, new mexico. this piece is from oregon.

not considered moss agate, but close. the inclusions take a more organized form than typical moss.
think feathers and eagle rock! it's a valuable material.

I know a little bit, but you may being a little too specific. You live in Oregon, and are posting a rock very specific to a place in Oregon. Not very fair for people that live thousands of miles away.

i didn't mean it as an insult or a bragg, sorry if i came across as such. it is a world famous material though. you can find lots of pictures online. the game would be way too easy if there were no specifics. if we went by true geologic terms, every form of agate, flint, chert, jasper, and opal would all fall under chalcedony. geology has no term for these rocks other than that. for rockhounds, it's quite a different story. if this rock was sold as simply agate or plume agate, it would have almost no value to anybody other than the factories in china, india, mexico, or brazil.

I don't think you came off insulting or bragging.
I assumed it was an agate when I first saw the thread and I spent about 45 minutes trying to figure out what type with no luck.
Maybe give the win to Beefy1 so we can try another. Or maybe some more hints.

moqui marbles, or iron concretions
i'll also add that they come from southern utah, weathered out of the navajo sandstone formation that most people are familiar with via the arches and grand escalante staircase.

From mexico.
I cheated on the second part of my answers. Next time upload the picture to imgur or the shroomery so I cant just go back to where the image was hosted. It was sort of second nature to go back to where its hosted.

some are actually considered rocks, such as the word agate or any named variety of agate. the same can be said for opal, jasper, flint, and chert. these are not minerals, but chalcedony is, which classifies them all the same, which is just plain lazy for minerologists. they are all a form of micro crystalline quartz.

Well, Shit, All of the 'guess the..." threads are easy to cheat. Google image search will find the exact picture for you if it's ever been posted on the internet.

I think he was just making a reference to Breaking Bad, but I appreciate the clarification. So basically all of the stones in this thread have been true rocks thus far, no?Quote:

Wouldn't you already have to have an idea of what the plant is in order to be able to search the other google picture out and match the two? I'd like to know how so as to make my next time in the plant thread cheat proof.

Nope. Not searching for images by name, searching by pixels I think. Just right click the thumbnail, Copy image URL, go to regular google search, paste it into the box. Click search, it will return no results. at the end of the message saying no results, there will be a link 'try image search'
It will give you the exact picture along with a list of similar pictures.

i usually(not always) upload the pic to my pic folder on my hard drive, then go to properties and change the name at the top. then it goes to the shroomery and the website it's from is changed to shroomery. i think that makes it impossible to trace. tell me if i'm wrong.

Yep. Typing words in and looking at the pictures is fine.
Search by image kinda defeats the whole purpose of the thread.
Re-sizing doesn't help. you can just click find all sizes.

Mexican lace Geode is what I had
Close enough.
Got any photos of your personal stash? (of rocks)
I was expecting you to just try the google trick on that one.
Test to see if adding black lines will confuse Google enough.

No good. Still finds it.

fire agate is correct. there have been a few other stones than agate on here. i have posted 3 types of agate, 1 obsidian, and a herkimer. there has also been blue quartz, jasper, and that silver ore that i thought was a lead ore.
there was fire opal too.

it's a very old art form, the oldest of them dating back 443-495 million years, or the ordovician age.

i wish it was my fire agate. i get mine out of southern california, from the opal hill mine and another spot nearby, where i can dig whole nodules out of soft ash. opal hill mine is all in hard andesite rock, requiring sledge, chisels, and gads. i'm lucky to find a tiny spot of fire in it, though it does usually have some pretty sagenite, which i love. i'll dig a new one up here.

HOly shit that stuffs expensive. THey want like $3000 for a tiny little piece. look on google. There's several mines in san diego area that have similar looking stuff. I'll go with
Tourmaline Elbaite Cryo-Genie Mine, San Diego Co., California, USA. That's this one anyway

tourmaline on smokey quartz, from the himalaya mine, near pala. i would love to someday own one of those mines. i will if i inherit money, and one is up for sale. i get crazy when i see one advertised, but i don't have nearly enough money, and then be able to keep it running as well.
close enough, since the formation is the same, your turn.

it is pyrite. i was looking for the term "pyritohedron", but i'll give it to you. it's a well known location, but i won't give it away here because the deposit is almost gone, and i want to be able to continue collecting them. anyone doing a web search can find them easily.

Here's some stones I found:

The black one is not actually a stone, but rather something else. I'm not sure what the orange one is exactly. I found it in Idaho, and steel blades are incapable of leaving a mark. It is also slightly translucent when held up against a light.

hey shroomies, quartzsite was lots of fun and successful! i'm now in borrego springs looking for tortoise shells and waiting for my next show at my parent's house. i found a big whole 35 year old tortoise shell at wiley's well out in the palo verde wilderness a few days ago. i may go to the ocean view mine soon to sift for tourmalines and other beryls.
my last post was star garnet from emerald creek by the way, good going bait! heulandite! the most recent pic i'll guess heulandite. i have some new rocks that i got in quartzsite that i'll take pics of soon.

passifloracaerulea said: hey shroomies, quartzsite was lots of fun and successful! i'm now in borrego springs looking for tortoise shells and waiting for my next show at my parent's house. i found a big whole 35 year old tortoise shell at wiley's well out in the palo verde wilderness a few days ago. i may go to the ocean view mine soon to sift for tourmalines and other beryls.
my last post was star garnet from emerald creek by the way, good going bait! heulandite! the most recent pic i'll guess heulandite. i have some new rocks that i got in quartzsite that i'll take pics of soon.
How do you tell the age of a turtle shell? is it like counting the rings on a tree?

you can tell the age of the tortoise by counting the rings inside the scales, or at least that's what i learned when i was a kid.
i'm going to the oceanview mine this sunday for tourmalines and morganite. i'm fucking excited! it's really alot of bullshit tour crap, but they give you 4 hours to screen their tailings for 60 bucks. i'll grill the owners for as much info about the surrounding geology as well. i was told about people finding pegmatite dikes and breaking into them for nice beryl near the mines but on public land. all of the mountains out here are pegmatite though and it's been confusing trying to find places to dig/break.
i have alot of pictures of rocks i got in quartzsite, but i'm not on my own computer now. i probably won't be able to post anything until i get back to oregon. this weekend i'm thinking of going up near barstow to dig for some beautiful plume agate that someone showed me in quartzsite. anybody who wants to meet up and dig, give me a shout pm(hard work involved). it's exploratory for me still, but i know the general area to find it.

you want to look for pegmatites(groups of crystal conglomerate such as mica, quartz, tourmaline, and feldspar). you're right to look in contact zones, but also just break into the pegmatites when they seem hollow or part of a solid mt. if there are any crystals in a wash, then explore the hills above, and always inspect areas of past human disturbance.
