Figured I would start a thread of "Spores under a Microscope!"... Trying to use some of these spores as "intended"... Feel free to post your own pics, or comment on mine!

Some shots taken @ 400x, with a camera aimed straight down the barrel! 2nd picture of both these, appear to be germination of spores w/ mycelium...

out of curiosity, what is the purpose for viewing spores under a microscope other than perhaps identification and entertainment? Is there any real advantage to be take by using a microscope in this hobby?

ID'ing is prob. the biggest use... Along with checking cultures for contamination... I find it entertaining none-the-less...

yeah not saying I don't understand why people have them. I wish I could get one right now, but is it really useful for contams in agar? I might have to look into that.

In Agar? Contams should be obvious "on" agar... You can use your microscope to see contams inside your spore syringes!:super2:
Im just enjoying my new toy...

Great stuff guys.
EM, how do you compute the "Correction Factor"?
Thanks!

The gentleman who sent me the scope calibrated the scope with a stage micrometer.
This gives you a number to X by the scale on a reticle for accurate sizing of specimens under the microscope.
He sent me all the numbers for each of my objectives, so when I measure a spore for example I multiply the divisions by the correction factor of that objective to find the size of the spore in micrometers.

I see. I must have gotten similar info with my scope.
I need to get busy with that thing, but am occupied these days.
Thank you for taking the time,

great thread. cool equipment, I have been thinking about getting one, so I can view trichomes, without using one of those little radio shack 100 times hand microscopes. It would be way cool to view spores from wild strains, too.
