Most of our traffic originates from search engines, so it's important that we allow spiders to index the publicly accessible forums. That's how people find their way to the site.
But it's not really spiders that are the problem per se. It's anyone who decides to go digging through old posts and pulls up a long thread that isn't cached in memory. It's just that spiders are more likely to do that sort of thing more often.
Posting a reply to a very long thread also has a big performance penalty and can lock up the site. This is another problem which will be addressed with the upgrade.

You are aware why your suggestion has not taken place yet. Bumping this will not make the upgrades go any faster.
Anyway, what many members here have done to achieve similar function as an invite only journal is to create a private invite only PM mailing list. You can send your posts, rants, musings, or whatever to only those users who you invite and subscribe to your list. And you can remove someone at any time if you no longer want them on your list. It is very handy and private.
You may want to consider using that in the meantime.

Veggie - we do this already w/ AMU...We're hoping to get an AMU only journal. That way we don't have to worry about all the s & can actually discuss our experiments openly. I know several members knew of my cig butt experiment before I even started it.

A mailing list, public or private, would not show up in Active Journals. They are two different things.
>It would be awesome if only ppl on that mailing list would be able to post in said post<
Only people on a mailing list can post on the list.

veggie - I think you're missing our point. We want a journal that is never on the active list. It's hidden. Therefore, only Mods & those invited to said journal can view it. It's annoying when anyone that clicks on the "active journals" can see ours. They come in & start talking to us when they're not welcome or they just lurk the whole time. Our chat threads normally run 2:1 views to posts. That's a lot of lurkers.

Oh, I understand your point. The journal changes you are requesting and looking for will happen in the future. I was just suggesting a viable alternative that you can use in the present.

veggie - I feel ya, but it's not a viable solution ATM. We want/need the secure journal

Not trying to be disrespectful here... Want you to know that... Just curious as to what is going on...
You say the hardware is ready and racked... Most colocation's charge per rack space... When are we going to see new hardware and upgrades Ythan?
This place is awesome, and i want nothing but improvement for it...

Sorry, I just don't know man. If I had an ETA I'd tell you. We'll move to the new servers as soon as I find time to handle it myself, or someone else to take care of it.
