As far as I know they don't allow the homeless to take up permanent residence there. Are the protesters that much different?

Of course they're different. Homeless people don't have money to pay for legal representation so they can't stay. The OWS people have got a lawyer to convince a judge to issue an injunction preventing the police from evicting them.
BTW, I'm not taking sides. I'm not clear on whose side I'm on in this whole OWS thing. Just pointing out the facts as I see them.
