White worms/larvae inside Amanita Muscaria... dangerous??
    #15314070 - 11/02/11 07:35 PM (3 years, 26 days ago)

I'm going to be drying some Amanita Muscaria in my oven on a low heat.  It's said by many people (here) that the heat will drive them out.  If that's so, they will just die in my oven right?  That's fine by me.  Once dried, I'm going to crush the Amanitas into a powder for tea.  Is there any reason I should worry about the potential larvae?

I separated the stem from cap on 7 muscarias.  1 cap had one little larvae tunnel and looked good.  The other had multiple tunnels.  I'll discard that cap if there's reason.

Also, what oven-temperature is best for drying muscaria?

Any advice is appreciated!

I found a patch last year of Muscaria var. Formosa,
I tried to dry them in my window and I noticed these same bugs (I'm assuming)
They didn't dry at all and they ended up smelling like rotten jizz and covered (inside and out) with these wierd little worm things...

Personally I don't like the thought of wierd things crawling in my psychoactives... I think it would bug me during the trip...

Why wouldn't the mushrooms dry?!

Just looked before putting them in the oven... I have 7 caps and only one has larvae tunnels.  I saw the little fucker crawling around so I tossed him in the garbage.  I may just discard that one.  Or just discard the areas the bug clearly got to.  The cap skin is most important which is easily salvageable.

I don't think they're dangerous but I believe they produce irritants that add to the nausea. If you have a powerful fan you could try to force as many out as possible by breaking up the mushroom and drying it in front of that and then finish drying in the oven.

Muscaria are common enough to be picky with your finds. Just keep an eye out during the right seasons and find a healthy fruit.

The maggots are probably harmless, but could harbor parasites. Also, eew. Also, first post in the forums like ever.

Actually not everyone was a noob.  Being a noob is a very new phenomenon.  Many people, the great majority in fact, were simply "beginners", "novices" or "new to mushroom growing".  Being a "noob" is reserved, and in fact created specifically for and by, the newer, much more lame generations coming about.
