Fruiting Chamber pics and questions
    #15294520 - 10/29/11 09:31 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

My current fruiting chamber features an aquarium air stone covered in perlite, two addition tubes of air, a humidifier, and a small LED flashlight. I am going to monitor the humidity and temperature.

Can I get some feedback?

Here you see a cased tray inside the fruiting chamber

To case, I have a layer of casing, my substrate (rye grain), and a top layer of casing that is composed of peat moss, vermiculite, calcium sulfate / calcium carbonate. I then spray some hydrogen peroxide and cover it with foil. Last, I poke five or six holes in the aluminum foil. I've seen a little green mold. Can I get some feedback about my casing?

Here is a different casing pan showing some green mold.

Why would you put the humidifier in the grow chamber?

These pictures are somewhat inadequate to see what is going on..

That's a nasty looking mold.  I hope it's been tossed out long ago.

In the future, the casing layer goes on top, not top and bottom.

Don't spray anything you're trying to grow mushrooms on with peroxide, unless you see a small spot of cobweb mold on the surface.  Peroxide harms the mushroom mycelium, knocking it back and then allowing the much faster growing molds to take over your project.

You should dump all that stuff and build a shotgun terrarium for growing mushrooms.  Let nature do the work.

RogerRabbit,

When I do a transfer between rye jar to rye jar may I use hydrogen peroxide? What about when I am adding a grain jar to a bag, may I use hydrogen peroxide then?

I will cease using hydrogen peroxide to mist my casing

Only use it for first aid. You should do your G2G and G2Bag in a still air box or flowhood. Srsly threw that ish with the mold and such out. It will make you sick and could possible compromise your health in a very serious way. Don't mess with contamination or try to save it unless its like cobweb and you got a flush already coming in. And even then toss it soon as your flush is done.

So if I'm understanding correctly, hydrogen peroxide has very little use and may actually contribute to contamination?

I got rid of the one green tray that was significantly contaminated. The first picture seems to have a little green contamination, so I sprayed it with hydrogen peroxide in hopes that I do not have to throw away the whole tray because of one small green area.

The second picture looks almost like fresh frozen snowflakes. I am referring to the strange way the mycelium has colonized.

I'm starting to think about switching my design to something resembling RogerRabbit's shotgun. I still think it would be beneficial to include aquarium air stones / air pumps.

Leave out the air pumps, the air stones, etc etc.

All you need is a clear tote, a 1/4" drill bit and drill, and some perlite.

K.I.S.S = Keep It Simple Stupid.

The SGFC was engineered...by an engineer(Roger Rabbit) to keep a high RH
and provide your mushrooms with proper FAE through regular misting and fanning.

To often people want to add things to their chambers...it is all unneeded
and in the end complicates things or creates other issues and problems.

Drill 1/4" holes 2 inches apart on all 6 sides of your chamber, moisten
some perlite, strain well and then place 4-5" into your chamber. Simple,
easy, cheap.
