Well, I am over here in Afghanistan, situated in a remote area, and will be here for nine months, already I have been through some situations that will change me. If you are curious about what is like, I might be able to give you some perspective.

That's intriguing. I'd be interested in hearing your general reflections about the area, in addition to a story or two if you have time.

The local people like us pretty well, we mostly just kind of make sure our area is stable. The local "bad guys" are always hitting us with RPG's and small arms. Me being a medic, I have tended to the local populace and my own guys. The conditions are pretty terrible. The water is unsafe to drink. Mostly, the area we operate in is a sparse farmland. One night while pulling a traffic control point, a vehicle wrecked on a bank of a river, and I had to patch up a busted boys knee. Another time, the "bad guys" had us ambushed in a U-shape, during which a smoke grenade went off in one of the guy's hands'. There was tissue trauma, and I could see underlying tendons, but I was able to patch him up. Apparently, the majority of the populace here have no idea what 9/11 means.

Why are you guys over there, really?
Don't say to stabilize the place, because there are plenty of war zones in Central Africa that could also use stabilization.

As a medic, have the locals offered you opium?

The people here smoke hash like it is going out of style. We've been offered some, but gotta decline it. As to why we are here, I can't honestly answer that question, but I am here so I gotta do what I gotta do.

Are you liable to any kind of troubled by posting here from your location? Do you think if they were aware of your activity here that it may make you prone to random drug tests?
It doesn't look like you're worried either way.
Do you have a strong anxiety about killing or being killed?

Interesting, I've always wondered about these things. I had a good friends of mine, practically a brother, come back from his tour in Iraq about 3 years ago. He came back a completely different person. He never said what happened, I remember him showing me pictures he had taken of of the aftermath of some bombings, pieces of people strewn around and he seemed to find this funny. He was going to clinic for PTSD a few months after he got back and then off'ed himself. Still not sure what really happened there.

Be safe, and godspeed sonavapreacha.
So far what has been the most profound realization that has came to you since your deployment, and/or what was the "heaviest" (for lack of a better term) event that you've undergone since being there?

Well it's not surprising that the locals don't know about 9/11. Those people are so used to invaders that it doesn't really matter either way
About how many troops do you reckon use hash or opium? I'm guessing you guys aren't tested; it seems like you're in the middle of nowhere.
