Ghosts, what do you believe?
    #15284915 - 10/27/11 06:51 AM (6 months, 30 days ago)

I think it's utter horse shit.  You die and that's it, you don't come back to fuck with people and move objects around. I debated with a few friends of mine that all believe otherwise.  What does shroomery believe?

I brought up ouijia boards, god, demons, heaven and all other supernatural stuff and they believe all of it to exist and that "they wouldn't go play with a ouija board at some concentration camp."  I just said "On a scale of 1-10, I am a 9 whereas 10 is knowing ghosts don't exist, I am not a 10 because I can't prove it just like you can't prove I don't have a pterodactyl that visits me when I am alone."
Do ghosts exist?

Yes they do
No they do not

I beleive in ghosts, why wife her brother and mom both beleive also, as well as a few of my friends. They have had their crazy experiences.

Before my wife and I moved to Oregon we lived in a really old house in the basement which was turned into a single bedroom apartment. The owners upstairs have all (mom, dad, teenager) have all seen an older lady and a young boy as ghostly beings.
One night when they where all on vacation in Mexico my wife and I heard what sounded like someone bouncing a ball upstairs. My wife yelled go play outside and it stopped. It was weird. Another time the teenager came down to hang out for a while because is parents where gone and he saw the old lady roaming around and it freaked him out a bit.

Another house I lived in for a while just just had a funky vibe, not a pleasant one at all. My roomates old lady said she saw some weird blue lights in the house before we moved in. We laughed at her. By the time we all moved out we couldn't be happier to get out of there. For me it was just a funky vibe and random strange noises I could never figure out what they where from. I used to get home at 2-3 am and pretty much park my car and half run to the front door, I just didn't like it.

Now, I don't know what I beleive when it comes to ghosts. Left over energy, an actual spirit, or what ever. I just beleive there is some for of energy that can interact with the living 3 dimensional word we reside in.

I think ghosts are complete horseshit. I've lived in several 100+ year old buildings, one where someone killed them self and another where several people have died. Hell, my current building is about 60 years old and I know for a fact there have been a few suicides in this building(maintenance people told me). Not once have I ever even come close to a supernatural experience. I've also been to a few "haunted" places and the only thing I saw there were a bunch of nut jobs psyching themselves out over nothing.
"DUDE! DUDDE! DID YOU FEEL THAT? IT WAS LIKE SOMEONE TOUCHED ME OR SOMETHING!"
"DUDE! DID YOU SEE THAT? THAT WHISPY THING FLY BY? OMG THIS IS FREAKY, I'M GETTIN OUT OF HERE!"
"OH JESUS MAN, I THINK I JUST HEARD A LITTLE GIRL TALKING!"

Horseshit I say.

Ive lived in a "haunted house". Saw alot of random slamming, doors things moved across the room from where the were seconds ago, clearly heard footsteps in our attic and witnessed a possession in which the person began to levitate. But it was a Drafty House. Lotta wind.

None of that is true.

But because he wants to do it in his own strength, he is fighting not with man but with God. He wants to have a great task set before himself and to carry it through on his own accord. And then he is very pleased with his place. Many have taken the first leap of pride into life, many stop there."

I too believe ghosts are horseshit. I have heard many ghost stories from my friends, but all the people that tell them already believed in ghosts, spirits, and other superstitious supernatural shit, or they were religious.

I have yet to hear a ghost story from someone that absolutely thinks ghosts didn't exist and then became a convert. I see and hear creepy shit all the time, but I just write it off as creepy shit that I can't 100% explain. I think people that like to think about ghosts have fun coming up with all these wild ghost ideas in their heads the same way that conspiracy theorists love spinning their brains off in different tangents.

Horse shit, indeed.

But with enough conviction and determination, people will manifest "true experiences" about anything. Jesus, aliens, ghosts, voices, etc.

I believe that people who see/believe in ghosts either a) are having some kind of psychotic episode or b) are having some sleeping trouble, be it sleep paralysis or whatever or c) just let their imagination run away with them.

Definately real.  I've seen them, my family have seen them, one of them even communicated a future event that came true, proving to me they are real.

If you study NDEs you'll quickly see that theres a lot of evidence that death is not the end.

Many mainstream scientists now believe that the brain is the receiver of consciousness not the creator.

Seeing is believing though.  You'll find out soon enough as will we all :reaper:

when i was a kid i had a pretty horrifying experience with ghosts,so i dont think i was going all psycho. i was a kid and my whole family saw them too, the big creepy thing that they would do was sit and stare at you i remember the eyes really well. at one point they became kinda violent i suppose i was playing and jumped onto my parents bed backwards and as i fell my hand somehow got cut open no bullshit and there was nothing around the bed that could have cut me just air, also you would wake up with the feeling like someone was chocking you or something. that house was messed up this is true.
just a side note to maybe i was experiencing some sort of mental instability both my parents did smoke meth when we lived there, i dont remember sleeping to often but my grandparents who lived there before us told us about it so idk
just my experience with them i am still not sure what i believe.

Its so egotistical to assume you know everything.  Thats what you have done by ruling it out completely.

A few thousand years ago people thought bacteria didn't exist because people hadn't invented a microscope to see them.  They had the same ego problem as you do but time proves out limitations must be expanded.

Its best to stay open to possibilities.  I could accept if people said they thought ghosts were unlikely but to state with certainty that its "shit" really is just ignorant and mind less.

There are billions of dead people. Wouldn't they all be ghosts or at least like 10% of them. If ghosts were real we would see them everyday because there would be at least a million we and probably wouldn't be able to get away from them. The people who didn't believe in ghosts would be looked at as crazy if this was true.

If you believe in ghosts what do you think the rules are for becoming a ghost? Do you think everyone becomes a ghost?

Re: Ghosts, what do you believe? [Re: PreparationH]

1 night i was crashing on my friends couch completely sober and we both heard the door open but it had not actually opened. Then we heard panting of a dog, followed by the sound of dog footprints. Buddy A was still sleeping and as the dog sounds continued they jumped onto his bed. In the midst of sleep Buddy A sat up and opened the window for the invisible dog. He then closed it, and you could hear the dog running down the alley on the side of the house. he woke up 10 seconds later because i had woken him up to tell him what just happened. he said it was strange because he had a dream about the same thing happening only he could see the dog. after that night i fully believe in ghosts, there is no way that did not happen.

no skitzo

Wow, even split.

I voted no, because I haven't seen/experienced anything causing me to believe in them.

This halloween is going to be awesome. Going to a huge kegger.. never been to a keg party before! Woot!

Couldnt have made it more to the point me self. I dont believe ghosts are some disembodied human consciousness, I do believe with absolute certianty that paranormal activity is a very real phenomenon. Ive seen shit happen that defies explanation heard shit where there should only be silence. I believe.

I pity the fact that you shut down all possibility simple becuase of the fact that within your limited sphere of existence you yourself have never experienced anything concrete.

Had my first and hopefully last paranormal experience last year, and that will change your perspective on life and death more so then a thousand DMT trips ever could.

Also, I now look at atheist as morons. They can't help it and I once too questioned the ability to maintain a conscious after physical death. But atheist are dead wrong.

Did that. Nothing happened.

and i do mean a loooooong while, living there helps

Yeah, did that too. Lived in a 140 year old building that several of my neighbors told me was haunted... Little girl, old man, old woman, stuff moving, lights going out, dishes being cleaned, etc. I didn't see any of that shit. The scariest thing I ever saw there was this:

And a couple of times I saw this!

I've had two very blatant experiences with ghosts. Both while very lucid, and before I had even begun using drugs.

I know they're real, but I would be very skeptical had I not had those experiences.

for all the people who have "felt" ghost or sensed them because they interacted with matter (a.k.a making sounds, creaks on the floor, cold sensation, being touched, waves in a pool etc), how does that even make sense? so they walk through walls... go places.. chill for eternity, bound to a specific material placebecause of some reason? how can they walk through walls but also vibrate the air molecules in some of the distinct frequencies that humans can here. How can they water molecules move? how can they stand? does gravity act on them? whats holding them together if they have no molecules.. how can 'energy' talk or have a datatbase of memories to draw from causing them to haunt someplace. why do some people haunt places and others don't? is there some special universal rule for who stays and who goes elsewhere? can ghost see? how do they sense the environment around them? how do they detect light and build a conceptual model of space if they are just ghost?

why are they restricted to our little corner of our solar system? if they're not, how do they travel? they can get in a pool and zip around space? how do they accelerate? how do they know where they are going? how come we don't have any concrete evidence of ghosts? how come people mainly "feel" them after they have been told they are in a place where they might see them?

Who the fuck knows, why is it theoretically possible for a ball to roll of a table and instead of dropping bounce up.

but "down" has no absolute meaning except the direction of the pull of gravity here on earth. So unless you demonstrate a ball violating newtons laws of physics by accelerating against teh net force I don't think that is actually possible

I can understand skeptics.

Seeing is believing.

I didn't hear creaky noises, or anything. I was sober as one could be and with a friend. Sleeping on the basement floor of another friends in his storage room. No windows or other sources of lights. Room was so dark you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. Were talking and laying a few feet apart next to each other. Both of us are looking in the same direction and out of now where, A very thin mist made out of what I can best describe as just "pure light" manifested. Within a minute the foggy mist condensed into a solid orb of light and hovered there for a few minutes moving around but not much. The whole event couldn't have been more then 10 minutes long and when the orb disappeared it spread out into the mist again before doing so.

I have always been a skeptic, and this happened to me last year. If I was by myself I would have thought my mind was playing tricks on me
But when someone next to you shares the experience and confirms your not crazy by saying "Holy shit do you see that, I cant believe this"
... Well it leaves you with a lot of thinking to do.

Its an experience like seeing what I did, or an apparition that will destroy every skeptical fiber of your being.

I feel privileged in my having an experience most people never will have. My questions, my philosophies about life after death have for ever been changed. And there is no drug you could take that could transform your entire perspective on life and death the same way having an extreme paranormal experience while your sober can.

Newtons laws don't always apply to quantum physics.

Or I could just be drunk and thinking of completely different things,

i think most people just keep an open mind. having an open mind means you know that you can never really know anything. I don't certainly believe in anything...but that doesn't mean it might not exist

I mean there's a lot of unexplainable shit that goes on...i dont know what it is. Neither do you. So don't be so certain

Lol. My views on the paranormal don't reflect my intellect, my political views, my philosophies on humanity and what direction we should take our selves. You sound like someone naive and close minded.

And there's a difference between being an ass and a retard.

Besides most down syndrome people I encounter are quite nice folks.
I guess your better off being a tard then an ass though.

He's addressing your manners, not your intelligence.
Maybe you weren't being sarcastic just then. :bored:

My first encounter with a ghost was when I was 7 years old. I was on the way home from a friend who lives two houses down. It was about 8 or 8:30, somewhat dark outside, during the fall.
When I was crossing yards from my friends house to his neighbors, an apparition of a teenage girl manifested, traveling very quickly down the sideyard, passing right in front of me and then vanishing a few feet after.
It was like something you would see out of a movie. She was made of whispy ethereal material that was white and translucent. She wore a night gown that seemed like something a southern girl might wear a long time ago.
She actually traveled a few feet out into midair, because the neighbors yard drops several feet and has a retaining wall; which she passed by about a yard.

I was pretty young, and had never experienced anything remotely similar before, so I was completely stunned for a few seconds, but immediately ran home after. My family didn't believe me, so I never thought about it for the longest time.

Never used the word retarded, that was you.
I just said you sound like an ass for the way you stated it.

I don't call people retarded for there beliefs or experiences, I just find them interesting and usually try to understand them. If I don't agree, then that's fine with me, I just don't try and be all better than thou about it.

Oh well to each there own.

Its so egotistical to assume you know everything.  Thats what you have done by ruling it out completely.

We don't know for certain that the tooth fairy isn't real either. There is a minuscule probability she has existed. But the evidence is slim.

By the way, check your vocabulary: overconfidence in one's opinion isn't a sign of egoism. Perhaps extremely presumptuous or "closed-minded" is a more apt description.

Quote:

A few thousand years ago people thought bacteria didn't exist because people hadn't invented a microscope to see them.  They had the same ego problem as you do but time proves out limitations must be expanded.

Those in the past who denied the existence of microbes had a big ego? Weird logic. By this analogy, we can also assume those who denied the earth was round (as it was later proven) also had big egos?

People in the middle ages had extensive experiences of the devil and witches. Doesn't mean in time it will be revealed they were real. Science doesn't work that way.

Quote:

Its best to stay open to possibilities.  I could accept if people said they thought ghosts were unlikely but to state with certainty that its "shit" really is just ignorant and mind less.

Ignorant and mindless?

Again, the word is "overconfident." What's with you using personalisms incessantly?

Quote:

And again you display that you talk from ego not logic or research.  Thats your ego telling you that you know everything and everyone else is dumb.

And you responded to me with logic or research? All you did was insult me.

And there is no fucking research on ghosts. Get real.

Ghosts are usually just souls that didn't move on to the other side like you're supposed to when you exit the physical vehicle.
They are completely harmless to us although may be stuck in a tapestry of their own illusions.
They are just lost and stuck in-between the material and spiritual void, if you encounter one, you should help them find their way home.
Whenever dealing with any ethereal, physical or quasi-physical beings one important rule to always remember, all you need is love.
Also to be devoid of fear.

I do not mean to offend, if you disagree with me and believe I am wrong and that ghost are real, GOOD!  You have the floor, tell us why I am wrong and why lack of belief in superstition is flawed, you are the speaker of the floor, proceed...

******
Extra credit:
*Also, fill me in on why belief of demons, god, hell is a good thing.... I am curious.*
I am a full blown atheist, god is not real.  When I die, that's it.  It bothers me, I don't want to cease to exist,  life is awesome!  I believe that this life is all I have, and all that there is.  I try not to take it for granted because I think that after 60 more years TOPS, I'll be rotting in the dirt, I'd be lying if I said I am not  depressed by this thought yet such is LIFE, and I am so glad I have had the luck to experience it.  These realizations makes me try not to take life for granted(HA!, we all take this for granted, don't bullshit with me!)

If you believe in heaven/an afterlife, you believe that this is not the end and that there is something else/better than this right?  So do you then not get sad when you know you are passing away?  You do believe you are going "somewhere better" right?

I call bullshit, there are no ghosts, no goblins, no ghouls, no angels, no heaven, no hell, no afterlife... I think when you die you cease to exist just like as you were prior to birth, you just "weren't" I have no problem with this because I didn't have any problem with it 300 years ago...

I hope that I am wrong, boy I hope that I am wrong.

I believe in paradigms a lot.  I believe in horoscopes and astrological signs a lot too.

Look into some rappers that have the same zodiac sign as you and I bet after three songs you will see what I mean.  All rappers do is tell stories.

That said I believe some people are just destine to fight ghosts and people that are possessed.  Some people are just meant to be moral vessels for the psychedelic/religious experience.

The visions you see in your sleep are from of your astral body in higher planes.  the same dream as my cousin I had once is my personal proof.

Robert Bruce does an interview on Coast to Coast that is really awesome it will explain how the demons work on 1d and are flat (shadows).

I have seen people talking about the fighting the knights templar and talking to sasquatch and black choppers on youtube.  It sounds crazy but I can't discredit until I have proof.

A huge part of this whole doubt I have on hidden knowledge is our movies.  Futuristic Sci-fi movies are almost always talking about ancient technology.

I bring up movies bc we are a lot like them.  A lot of times the symbol that is acting out a role is more important than the thing he/she is symbolizing.  That's just like us if you think about it.  Through each trip we experience we are brought into another light.

That's why they use specific actors for movies.
The illusion of having a body:lol:

No theres nothing wrong with my description.  Your ego is the part of the mind that gives you the over confidence to believe you know everything.  To claim ghosts don't exist is to claim
1.  You know what a ghost is
2.  You know all possibilities in the universe and can confirm ghosts do not exist

I assert that no human can know that simply because no human can know anything 100%  Humans work on likelyness and thats the best we have ever had.

Quote:

And you responded to me with logic or research? All you did was insult me.

I didn't insult you, thats your ego talking again.  You take a point that you cannot possibly know as an insult because it requires a change of your all knowing belief to accept you are incorrect so instead you view it as a personal attack.  Its a common emotional response mistake in debate.

If I am wrong and you do have all knowledge in the universe then I would happily change my view but I'm pretty certain no humans have all knowledge of the universe.  Only a god has that.

As for the research...  you clearly havn't looked.  Humans have researched ghosts and paranormal since the begining of time.  As for good modern research just look into the NDE phenomena.  Theres people who are clinically dead, brain dead and come back after rivival with real time information on events happening while they were dead.

This is not an isloated phenomena.  Doctors world wide have set up independant institutes to study the phenomena scientifically because they found it so compelling.

http://www.mikepettigrew.com/afterlife/html/u_k__study.html

Everything you have said to me can be summed up as this "I know the answers and you don't"  except you are not even aware of the basics like no human knows with certainty and their is research.

Humans have researched ghosts since the beginning of time? Nice hyperbole.

So, as early primates we set up laboratories in our caves and looked for apparitions?

As for "good modern research" look into NDEs... What in the actual fuck does a NDE have to do with ghosts?

Still waiting on this research of yours.

The bottom line is this;

To claim to know anything with certainty is an act of faith.

I'm a man of science and logic.  In science no possibility is ruled out and we do not rely on faith ever.  In cases like this where limited data is available it must be researched further and one day it may be possible technology will allow us to test and detect energies or forces that are now unknown to us now.  Indeed history and scientific growth has shown this to hold true.

I'm sorry if i insulted your faith in disbelief

I've studied them and gone out on various ghost hunts with groups at supposedly haunted locations (cemeteries, old houses or buildings, etc,) and I've never seen anything that would convince ghosts do exist. Believe me, I'd sure like to find evidence that there is something beyond death, but it sure doesn't look like it to me.

I agree with this, but possibility doesn't necessitate probability.

And the schizophrenic can shake his fists and yell at the psychiatrist that one day science will develop an instrument that will detect the voices in the room, but that doesn't make them any more substantial.

Your disbelief IS an act of faith.

For unbiased scientific and logical view one has to accept we do not know either way.  To choose a side of belief or disbelief requires an act of faith.

Ghosts do not exist.  Neither do gods, demons, ETs that butt rape you (although, I do believe there are other lifeforms or intelligence in the universe), tooth fairy, santa claus, leprechauns, bigfoot, the lochness monster, the evil eye, lucky rabbit's feet, ancestors that watch over you, reincarnation, afterlife.

To reduce believing in this BS and not believing to the same level by calling them both beliefs or faith..... Well OK, if that's all you got.  It's all really just a word game that people who believe in BS try to use.

There's only two things that would make me change my mind:
1:  If I personally experienced or witnessed any of the above to the point that continued disbelief would no longer make sense to me
2:  If there were solid empirical evidence that could be seen by anyone

And I'm not trying to challenge anyone's beliefs.  Believe whatever BS you want.  We'll never see eye to eye.  I'm just answering this thread.  Have a nice day!

Just cause you perceive something does not mean the event actually occurred in consensus reality. It is possible that electromagnetic energy is interacting with your brain and causing the hallucinations, many, many, haunted sites have been found to have unusual EM activity.

Lol at the people "Ghost don't exist" like it's a blatant fact.

Chances of most of you ever being lucky enough to have an experience like mine or getting to see an apparition are slim to none. Oh well I guess you'll figure it out when your dead:lol:

Ghost are real. I have seen one with someone else. Your a skeptic til it happens and once it happens you become irritated because it's something you can't prove and thus the cycle of folklore ghost stories continues on like it always has. Its quite a niche to be in though, to be able to have your perspective on consciousness after death changed forever. Its comforting in a way, yet again irritating... I feel like people view me and my encounter the same way I view people I see on TV with thief UFO abduction stories, completely ludicrous crazy bullshit.

I went through my cycle of being agnostic but that seems completely foolish now. And people who don't believe in ghost, I would love to call them stupid, but before last year.. Well I was on the skeptic/non believer's side. If my friend wasn't there to account for what I witnessed, I would think either I stayed up too late and my mind was playing tricks on me or that I was schizophrenic.

For unbiased scientific and logical view one has to accept we do not know either way.  To choose a side of belief or disbelief requires an act of faith.

Walking out the front door is an act of faith according to this definition.

I can't prove the world is going to exist when I turn my head around, but to claim we should adopt skepticism for every little tiny thing is pedantic and solipsistic.

We can also be agnostic about Satan and any other fairy tales.

Life after death or ghosts is not "every little tiny thing".  Maybe it is to you but to most people these questions are some of the most profound and fundamental questions of human existence.

You can't lump everything into one category either.  Its like saying anything I don't believe is a fairy tale.  Its unscientific and egotistical.  Who is going to decide what we should lump into your fairy tale catagory or not?  Thats why I advocate science because we don't want people making assumptions just to fit their personal paradigm.

As smart as you think you are for not believing you have some dumb fuckin responses to the believers. There's a clear distinction between:
1.) blind faith in illogical things
2.) recognizing our ignorance of existence. Leaving room for the mystery that pervades us.

It's easy to get lost in the details.

We all hold our own perceptions.
I'm sure you understand ours, but you choose to retain your own, respectively.

The experience is mutual;
so let us not create a disconnect through the critic of casual dialogue.

We are all capable of holding the same thoughts, it is just sometimes hard to convey the abstract and intangible.
To be lost in the mistakes of experession is to lose sight of what was expressed.

I think its more likely that ghosts/paranormal experiences are not (caused by entities) trapped here, but are instances where there is some "bleedthrough", for lack of a better word, from a parallel universer/reality. The latter which interestingly are considered to be likely real by quantum physicists. Similar to the theory that there are more ways to move through space-time than the up-down-forward-backward-left-right etc.. This theory also gives a lot of leeway to explain the lack of adherence to physical natural laws. But when you think about, dark energy and dark matter, in current accepted understanding, have to exist; and could be a related phenomena :P

whoops! apparently i myself have just rezzed the dead, my apologies

It's become an absolutely ridiculous notion to me.
(though that is not why I picked this user name)

But years ago when i was much younger the idea caused me some actual worry.
Now it seems silly and the more I learn about science the more ridiculous it all seems.

I love those ghost shows. I tune in at the end where they have nothing substantial to talk about. It's hilarious. Or ....OMG!I feel a cold spot! lol

I felt the same way for the first 20 years of my life, and i lived in a house where I had to write a lot of stuff off to drafts and pipes etc. or rather, very likely correctly explained a lot of occurances that way. Then i had a much more direct and up front experience that has since made me re-evaluate a few experiences from age 15-17 hah and offer the explanation I posted here to myself as I feel the need to explain almost everything that I believe to the extant it is possible and not disprovable; until someone offers me a hole in my current explanation I will probably be slow to amend or expand my explanation.

The fact is there are still many things humans currently do not understand.

Just because we have come so far scientifically should not suggest we now have all the answers.

Just stroking my own ego, no worries dude.

Regarding the specifics of ghosts, I don't know what to believe. I know there is something more to our bodies than physical matter.

If I hadn't had a very vivid experience with a visible ghost myself, then I would be very skeptical; considering all the nonsense that can be tied in with superstitions.

You shouldn't need any entheogens. People have paranormal experiences sober.

FictionalGhost is just trolling now. Ratings are like a children's popularity game.

Even if I experienced a ghost/paranormal activity, I wouldn't believe it, I'd figure I was losing my marbles and hallucinating.

You say that now, but I think it really comes down to the nature of your experience.

I believe man is the pinacle of existence.  Science knows everything. Anything beyond that is a delusion. If I can't see it it doesn't exist.  I don't even believe in the possibility of bacteria on my ass :snub:

Thats absurd and the stupidest statement ever.

Its like a guy in 1800 saying if I see anything flying that isn't a bird I must be hallucinating.  Oh look there go the Wright brothers I must sanction myself because its not in my existing paradigm.  Derp.

Its the epitimay of self assured egotistical brainwashing.  :commonsense:

Its funny how the people who dont believe in ghosts consistently make assumptions about what the phenomenon is and how its caused.
