THE SEEDLING THREAD- Let's see what you got!
#15279385 - 10/25/11 11:49 PM (7 months, 8 hours ago) |

I figured since we already have a flowers thread, I'd like to make one for seedlings. This can be especially useful for people trying to identify unknown seedlings. Often seedlings can look quite different than a mature plant, and it can be good to have some pictures to refer to. Plus, it is interesting to see mini plants. So this thread is dedicated to plants and cacti in their early stages of life. Let's start it off with:
Trichocereus Pachanoi "Mystery"

Astrophytum Myriostigma "Quadricostatum"

Sure, why not.
I see some really impressive cacti seedlings all around. Definitely a great variety. The chronological sequence is great.
Seems like praying mantises gravitate towards cacti. I have a similar pic of my own.

Hey SKrink, was your capensis grown from seed? It's beautiful! Also, and I apologize because I'm sure you've had to answer this question many times, but what species does the gorgeous flower in your sig belong to?

Yup, capensis grown from seed, hence posted here in the SEEDLING THREAD (jus messing with ya ) Seed courtesy of none other than World Seed Supply.
The flower in the sig is Huernia confusa, a stapeliad. Was lucky enough to pick up a specimen at the farmer's market that was already budding, all I had to do was see it thru to bloom.

Haha should have added "by you". I might just have to order some from WSS. Can you believe that I live in South Africa and can't find it anywhere? I must be looking in the wrong places.
Yet more proof that farmer's markets are the place to be.

I threw mine in a heated greenhouse; it's cold around here though; stays around 60F in the day and 50f at night. They THRIVE in the chillier temperatures, even as babies.
To be honest Skrink I have no idea what to do with them; will no doubt do a giveaway once they're 6 months old or so; might end up planting a whole ton in my garden, apparently they'll survive pretty freakin cold temperatures.
I'll have some pics up tomorrow then!

Here's a couple Mimosa hostillis - The little one I'm planning on Bonsai'ing. originally I was going to try to put it into a hydro setup. But never did, and it ended up root pruning itself in the rockwool, which kept it dwarfed among the others. Seems like a good candidate.

Some nicotiana

Some Trichocereus pachanoi

A little Pakistan Ryder Auto 12 days

and here's a Persea americana

please excuse the mess in the two rooms, I had just re-potted a bunch of stuff in there and taken the pictures before vacuuming up. Normally I'm not that sloppy, kinda embarrassing, lol.

Those look like they're doing great! Mine was doing awesome til it starting yellowing and dropping leaves from the bottom up. Nothing I do has seemed to help.. its down to its last 3 sets of top leaves and I fear its a goner.

Very nice! I'd love to start some of these up.
Thank you!
The mimosa seem to be very hungry little plants. I put them in Happy Frog soil since they germinated and they still started yellowing out a bit after 3-4 weeks. I transplanted into more happyfrog with added bonemeal/castings and fed them a some FF trio (1 tbl BB, 1 tsp GB, and 1 tsp TB). After that they really popped up and out and seem to be very happy!

Yippi,
I just noticed i got a 2-headed L.W. v. Texensis seedling.
I have never seen this before. I take pics and post in an hour or so.
Is this common?

Seems to be moderately rare, I have two seedlings like that from a batch where about 450 sprouted.

I planted 30 coryphantha elephantidens seeds and they all germinated, they grew faster than every other type of cactus seed i've planted then they started to die i noticed today they had a fuzzy white mold growing on them and sprayed with sulfur water. Are they going to survive? I have more fresh ones and some fruit growing on the mother plant so its not a big deal if they dont but it's nice to know they are 8 days old

Heres what I have going right now. My seedlings all have a ton of mold over the surface of their containers because I tried to plant cactus seeds for the first time and I kept them too wet. The mold spread to the other seedlings. They are growing fine though and soon will be transplanted to fresh soil and should be good to go:

lol ... Ill try to remember, these guys are SLOW to mature it will probably be at least another four months before I have mature pods... possibly longer.
Plus, Ill have to isolate a branch or two to get seed pure to each strain. I have other seeds though. This grow was more to sample the different peppers then to collect seed. Otherwise I wouldnt have put different types in the same tent. As mentioned though I can always isolate a branch to keep pure seed, and Ill probably do that on a few pods.
Hit me up after a few months or subscribe to my other thread and maybe we can hook up a trade down the road.

Aww ...
I know you have more to try again, but it always hurts to see that happen.
Also, have you looked into chamomile tea? I hear it works well as a fungicide to prevent damping off.

Thanks! All I wrote in my notes was 'used old seed mix' Racking my brains.. I think what I meant by that was 1 part John Innes #1, 1 part sharp sand, 2 parts moler. They are growing under a 160W 6400k cfl 15 hours a day, temps in the low 30s (~90f) dropping to 18C (64f) overnight, and they get cactus nutes for food.

Well mine at 5 months looked nothing like this either They are my plumpest pot from last years sowings. Here is the same pot at 7 months.

They were started with some mycorrhizal seed inoculant, and were out of their bag and acclimated to normal humidity within 2 months. The last 4 months they have been under lights, which is when they really took off.

Probably an invalid question seeing as this place is called the shroomery but what species was colonising the grain?

The most obvious answer of course! I'm guessing since it is anaerobic it will not provide any benefit to the plant and will probably die or get eaten by trich.

Bridgesii Seedlings

I received 100 Lophophora seeds in the mail, but they are labeled as Lophophora Mix and all in one small bag. I can't get in touch with the seller and have tried multiple times. Any way to differentiate between the species when they are seedlings or will I have to wait until they reach flowering age?

I know who you got them from. Did she have them labeled as williamsii? If so, I think they are all as advertised. GRow 'em and find out. Also,

I've seen mixed loph seeds advertised for pretty good prices and much as I like variety I think it would drive me a little nuts trying to determine what species the plants were. Sounds like that may not be the situation with this order though. I got some mixed williamsii recently and there were plenty of bonus seeds but overall germination was quite low, at least the price was low too. I don't think this was the vendor you two are talking about.

Well, I guess it will just be fun seeing what germinates and what doesn't. Hopefully, when my new order arrives I will have some lophs that I know the species of and that will make germinating those seeds a little more fun. :P

Got some seedlings coming along quite nice. Not long and they will be going outside in a nice bed with direct sun wooo.
Salvia desoleana - I think I'm going to fall in love with this plant, so aromatic and hairy. Some Nicotiana species off to the left.

Damiana - Not sure of species but I'd encourage speculation based on these little guys!

Mirabilis jalapa - wild looking seedling, this one popped up unannounced in my 5 gal caapi pot

Scutellaria zhongdianensis, baicalensis, incana, orientalis, albida, laterfolia on their first set of true leaves. There is actually some organization going on in there so I should be able to accurately divide them by species in a couple weeks. Lobelia inflata hiding in the lower right.

Withania somnifera - favorite adaptogen, cant wait to chew on some raw root this fall

Bridgesii with a few williamsii hiding off camera - terribly stretched but alas they to will go outside soon enough. Perhaps they will meet up with a family of Pereskiopsis in the future.

Also growing some peppers, datura ferox/inoxia, calabash tomatoes, acmella, nicotiana mutabilis, sylvestris, rustica the list goes onnn
Cant wait to put these all outside

The damiana look similar to those in the growlog I have going. Your leaves are stubbier, but that may be environmental.
It's also nice to see withania somnifera. We don't see that one as often as we should.

Lophophora williamsii (they're a little stretched but I plan on grafting most of these), Cereus forbesii v. spiralis, Cereus peruvianus monstrose, 2 trays of Trichocereus Bridgesii, and the last two pics are cherimoya seedlings. If you've never had a cherimoya before, you're missing out.

Capsicum baccatum "Criolla Sella"

Capsicum chinense "Habanero"

Datura Inoxia

Wild Ipomea from Belize (fastest seedling I've ever encountered)

i grafted a fissuratus seedlings to pereskiopsis. they looked exactly alike.
now they have grown considerably but they look nothing like a fissuratus. they got spines. but i harvested the seed from one of my plants. they seem very odd now.

is it possible they are some sorta hybrid? i mean its rare for me to harvest seed from my plants. the plants either drop seed or get stolen by ants but these a. fissuratus seeds i hand harvested from the plant.

That is most definitely a Mimosa Hostilis. They fold up like that at night. That's a young one and will form spines as it gets a bit larger.

Accidentally dropped my tray of bridgesii and lophs all over the ground. Thankfully I recovered all the seedlings and got to replant each one along with some other sunburnt bridgesii seedlings from outside (on the left). There are 4 lops hiding alongside 65 bridgesii. I wont lie I totally got off putting them in neat little rows...

Yes, we have the kona on the site.
I also have several different morning glories sprouting. I'll have to grab some pics when they start to look a little more interesting.

A mutated one. There is a few forms usually propagated through cuttings.

What method did you use to germinate them ?

I bury them all in a single Chinese soup container. I keep the lid on and come back to check them after a few weeks. Then I dig them up and transplant them. It might be more beneficial to presoak them though. I've seen other growers do that.

Would soaking them in boiling water be beneficial?

Not boiling. Just water.
Here are some of the morning glory seedlings just starting out. I'm doing a progression from pink to red (scarlet o'hara) to purple (grandpa ott's) to heavenly blue to flying saucers to pearly gates (pure white). They're not much to look at now. But I'm hoping for something interesting.

A Vaccinium arboreum seedling I found not three feet from the parent plant.

Here's a twig of the parent plant with which to compare:

This is what the seedling looked like a week or so after I plucked it from the earth:
