That offends me. No I'm just kidding. But really? I understand where the term stemmed from, and was appropriate in its time.. but why still today?

Because they called themselves Indians? Most Americans don't even know what India is and if they do it's because they talked to one on tech support. So it doesn't matter.

I took an Ojibwa studies class in college and the professor, who was full blooded Ojibwa, did not like the term "Native American" but had no problem with being called an Indian. He preferred to be called Ojibwa though. It was a while ago, so my memory is a bit cloudy, but I think it had to do with the fact that Americans put them on reservations, and tried to make them assimilate into our lifestyle. He said they forced them to convert to Christianity, and took their children away to be educated in American schools. The Ojibwa language was almost completely lost a few decades ago, when only a handful of the elders still spoke it. He said the whole "political correctness" was just another assault on their culture, and calling the Ojibwa "Native Americans" insulted their heritage...

Being Native myself, I can respect that logic. But I don't necessarily want to be called an Indian, simply because I'm not.

You're Native American? That's awesome! Which tribe are you a descendant of?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember learning in school that all the "natives" marched their asses over here via the Bering Straight. So technically they aren't native anyway.

The 'Native' part meaning we were here before the Europeans.

Yea, I might get a little carried away with it. But I am extremely proud of it. I should go on to say that I, myself am only half blood. My mother was full on native, but my dad is an african american.
I'm adopted though, and have nothing to do with my biological parents
