Wanted to get some opinions on how I did my BRF cakes.
I did the normal 2 / 1 / 1 ( verm, water, BRF ) but I then took 3/4 of a cup of organic brown rice and cooked it for 35 min ( supposed to take 45 min to be fully cooked). Rinsed and drained it and then mixed it in to my BRF mixture. I was making enough substrate to fill 12 1/2 pint jars.
The other thing I did different was, I filled the jars completely up to the top. Tapped the fairly hard on the counter top so they would settle and then finished capping them the rest of the way up with more BRF substrate. Because of the lack of the verm barrier I used microspore tape to cover the holes in my lids.. Then just cover with foil and PC like normal for 60 min at 15 psi. Let cool over night and used the oven method to knock up the jars with a syringe. Picking the needle though the microspore tape, injecting the solution and then covering the hole with another piece of the micro spore tape.
After 4-5 days, once I've got a solid colonization started, I'll peel off the tape covering two of the hole to it can breath. So far I havnt lost any to contaminates and my cakes are the full size of the 1/2 pint jars !!!
Once I drunk them I'll post picks showing the size difference between the cakes with a verm layer and the ones without.
Peace

just wondering what you thought you might improve with those variations?
I can't say that this won't work, time will tell but the verm layer & the gap at the top do work well to keep contams out. taking the tape off sounds liek trouble to me... the cakes only need gas exchange at this stage, so micropore tape should be enough I would have thought.
but I'm no expert by any means, and I always frig around with Tek's a little bit too so best of luck and we'll see how it pans out

My first attempt at BRF jars with a verm layer on top settled like a inch or better in the PC.
Several of the settled so much that I couldn't get the needle to reach past the verm layer when I was getting rdy to knock them up. So I figured why bother and just went with the microspore tape and this way I'm gaining an extra 1/2 - 3/4" of usable mycelium cake to fruit from

Smart move
EM knows his stuff. Keeping journals of ALL your grows is a great idea because it will help you spot any points that you may need/want to improve on in the future, and it'll give the rest of us the opportunity to help you avoid potential pitfalls. It also gives a reference for future new growers to follow.

As long as they're straight walled, your good. Those are the preffered jars though, for PF-Tek and more!

Hey quick question EvilMushroom, Mind me asking what tek you're currently using? The reason i'm asking this is because i'm trying to figure something out, I was doing this tek as an entry into growing mushrooms, I Will probably use this tek 1-2 to get the hang of things then move onto a bigger tek for a more bulk yield, Can these jars be used in a more bulker tek? Costing me about $23 for 6 jars which ain't bad at all, But if i'm only going to use them once and there not really used/good for other (bulker) tek's well yeah.
Thanks EM

Its been over three and a half years since my last grows, which were all Shiitake mushrooms on pasteurized hard wood substrate. I have since moved onto other hobbies but hang around from time to time to see whats new and how people are doing.
You can always crumble BRF cakes into bulk substrates, or grate them with a large clean cheese grater for more inoculation points. Look at the first run or two with cakes as a learning experience before moving onto other techniques, as said in the TEK its a good base to get a feel for things.

Those jars are also great later on for no pour agar jars, or LC/LI jars.

How much weight would roughly be in those 2 cups? I'm deciding how much to buy there is 2/3/5/8/10 etc etc, it goes by price $9/$10/$13/$16
I might grab 5L As i guess Vermiculite is always handy.
EDIT : 500g of BRF will that be enough? for 1 run of 5 jars also?
Another question is 100% ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL Fine to use? Rather then %70, Or could i just dilute the %100 add %30 water? there is 5L of %100 for $30, Seems not bad rather then buying small amounts.

Dilute to 70%. The way cells get killed is by absorbing the alcohol along with the water. Basically the water gets the alcohol into the cell, thus killing it from the inside out.
