I just remember looking up things that at least in the 90s not sure now. Big pharma along with tobacco and alcohol were contributing to anti-drug warfare.
They would not like what so ever if droogs became illegal, specially tobacco and alcohol.
but then again this is just mj, which will hurt tobacco and alcohol because it will become fully legal eventually. but big pharma... ehh maybe they will just buy into it and create different levels of pills, inhalers, who knows

I don't see this case getting very far, although it would be nice to see the DEA get sued..

No, not really. Its not at all unusual for a law firm to take on a high profile case pro bono. Its free advertising and since they are going up against the government, the expectation is they will lose, so if they DO lose, its not a big deal. OTOH, if they WIN, it will be a VERY big deal for them. So...no real downside, nothing but up side. That's how it works.

I see what your saying on the lawyers side. Just done underestimate pharma. The billions of dollars and all the power they have. The law firm would never go against those clients. EVER. Dont care how much of a profile the case is. Pharma is not saying noo.. Ofcourse this is all from guesses. No facts. But it makes sense if pharma clients say no.. that law firm would not pursue it...

Wherever the trial is, there needs to be large demonstrations there to put pressure on the judge. It's ridiculous that the DEA blocks all studies and has that single lab pump out a single strain of weed.

Yes, it has halted research on the plant itself.
You hear of studies because other countries around the world also do research with cannabis. Its incredibly difficult to do so in the states, and if you do get approval yadda yadda, you have to get your cannabis from the one university in the country that is allowed to produce it. It does not matter what KIND of study you are doing, its the same rules and regulations.
And yes, it needs to happen, and would be a great advancement in modern medicine. Not only are we at a loss in understanding THC's effects on the brain, but, more importantly, we don't fully understand the mechanisms in our own bodies that "break down" or "absorb" THC's effects.
Think about that news story posted a few days ago, the one about Endocannabinoids (Endo = "from within", so naturally produced cannabinoids) incredibly important role in the "placebo" effect. When we take something that is placebo, our brains produce endocannabinoids, which give us relief when we really took nothing. Now THAT is worth studying  we always act like we are so advanced and far ahead in the modern age, because steve jobs gave us apple iphones..... we really don't know shit about ourselves at this point, let alone know anything about the world around us 
That's really the great thing about intellectual inquiry, its why its addicting to some people (like me); once you open one door, it leads to a hallway with 4 more doors, than 8 doors, ect ect. There is always something new, always something to clarify, whether we are talking medical research, or historical research, or whatever.
