Some little kats
    #15196286 - 10/08/11 01:24 PM (7 months, 17 days ago)

These are a few babies i'm growing on a windowsill. Not sure the exact type but they do not seem to be the narrow leaf variety. I have some more coming up and some outside. I should take a pic of a couple that are about 6' tall. I keep topping them or they would be way out of reach by now.

Looking good. Surely the bottom right isn't Catha or if it is it is the most bizzare looking one I have ever seen.

Narrow leaf plants start out looking more broad-leaved anyway. The one in the back left looks like it might turn out to have narrow leaves.

Yes, the one in the right front is, upon closer examination, apparently a damiana. I see the kats i planted coming up below it so i'll just snip the dami. They do look like they will turn out to be kind of narrow leafed. I'll have a better pic later on. For now just ignore the big one in front.

What's your soil composition, and hot often do you water, I've got 2 out of 3 (one isn't gonna make it) doing well, and on their second set of leaves, but they're not near as tall as yours. Gonna transfer to different pots real soon!

If you can't find one, shuffle down the way a little, a little change of scenery or a view from a different angle may give you the insight you need.

fng, i just use buck a bag potting soil, the good stuff. I add a little perlite to improve drainage. I have one outside which is about 6" tall plus the 2 grandaddy ones. I keep hoping one of them or both will flower but after 8 years or so, not a flower to be seen. Maybe one of these newer ones will flower some day? I'm going to have a shitload of seedlings pretty soon because i got good germ rates. Be sure to give them lots of sun.

Baron, i have loads of rue but haven't tried sprouting any lately. They are hard to grow and like harsh conditions. But they sure will sprout.

Check this for answers to your questions: http://www.plot55.com/growing/c.edulis.html

Khat hates soggy roots so don't water too much. I grew mine from seed in coarse sharp sand like I do with cactus seeds. Once they were starting to out grow their seedling trays I put them in a mix of 50% potting mix and 50% corase sharp sand. I water mine about twice a week (they are in quite small pots at the moment).

Also, don't plant them in an area where they can be seen from the street etc otherwise you'll get Africans jumping your fence and tearing your plant apart.

I think I read a story on here of someone who had to chop their khat tree down because of the amount of people who were stealing the plant material

That would have been GoOnThen. See this thread for the story of his qat tree.

Fortunately in the US I doubt this is a big concern--Stoney's are in the back anyway, right? Also narrow-leaved plants are avoided by most groups, and I'm told even in Australia are free from the worry of being harvested unlike the more common types of qat.

Shit that was a year ago
It was a sad day

I had four large pieces survive and they are all growing really well. So far two of the large plants and also a number of the smaller ones have been given new homes.

The crazy thing about this tree is its still ALIVE I had to go and hedge it the other day to keep it down under 3 feet.
I was sure it was dead but it started showing growth again in winter

Now I have to decide what to do with it again.

Cheers
Got

I had some wide leaf plants but they died out along with my pereskiopsis. I thought most people prefer the narrow leaf anyway. No one knows what it is unless you tell people. That's the same way most indoor pot grows get busted, people shoot their mouth or show it to someone. Cops here have no idea what it is or if it's illegal and there are other common plants which look somewhat similar. In other countries it may be different. I've never heard of it for sale. fng, i thought that was funny too.

If anyone asked me what it was i'd say i got it at a yard sale and thought it looked pretty.

A friend of mine had Africans trespassing on his property lots to get his khat bush. We didn't even know what it was at the time.

My brother's friend had one in his front garden and an African guy knocked on his door and asked if he could have some. He asked him what it was for and the African guy told him it was medicine. He said he could take some. However, more and more people started coming and trespassing. They'd even stand on his car to get to stuff. He chopped it down and then some fucker had the nerve to knock on his door and abuse him for chopping it down. WTF!

I assume you mean real africans and not the pc euphemism for black people. The blacks around here wouldn't know what it was if you told them. In parts of africa they do chew it every day. About as dangerous as coffee. I have countless plants in my yard front and back including many cacti, vines, bushes, etc and no one has ever asked what anything was or what it was used for. I believe khat use to be scheduled but despite looking hard for it, i have not been able to find anything outlawing the live plant.

They do bust shipments coming in but customs can bust anything, they can bust roses or coffee or anything they wish. It does not mean the items themselves are illegal. They might be packed wrong or not have documents. In the case of khat they look at intent same as poppies. You can grow all the poppies you want but don't let them catch you scoring the pods and making opium.

Yeah, they were African Africans. I used to have to deal with Indians (from India) stealing curry leaves from me which really got me angry since it'd wake me up at night and the tree was getting all fucked up. I was going to chop the thing down but then when I discovered that the guy who wanted to buy the place was a complete fuckwit I decided to leave it so he could deal with the same problem.
