It's kind of a waste of time and effort supporting a cause that will waste more money and resources on things which are for the most part trivial.

it is NOT trivial if you are a farmer. Monsanto goes to great lengths to deny farmers the right to generate their own seed...to the point of hiring private investigators and lawyers to intimidate guys who own seed cleaning equipment.

Exactly!!! If you watch the video LiquidSmoke, you will see that. Not trivial in the least! It's that mentality that allows companies like Monsanto to do whatever they want and end up fucking us in the end! How is it trivial when they are bankrupting and taking EVERYTHING away from generational farmers for "allegedly" violating their patents on seed? For trespassing on their property so the gene police can get these "genetic reports" that are used against the farmers in court to sue them for everything they have? How is it trivial that b/c of Monsanto, you are effectively causing us to create monocultures of cash crops which weakens said crops b/c they are unable to defend themselves NATURALLY against pests/environmental problems, which also plays into their bottom line... ***enter their pesticides**** sold and used to combat these deficiencies that THEIR monocultures have created. Not to mention the harm that these chemicals do to the ground/ground water and US!!!!
Need I continue?!?!??!

Mississippi and Iowa, two big farm states, were recently tested for glyphosate levels in the air and water. Researchers found the key ingredient of Monsanto's Roundup herbicide in every stream sample tested, Scientific American reports.
The magazine quotes Paul Capel, environmental chemist and head of the agricultural chemicals team at the U.S. Geological Survey Office, saying: "It is out there in significant levels. It is out there consistently."
But Capel said more tests were needed to determine how harmful the chemical, glyphosate, might be to people and animals.
Real-Life Examples Speak For Themselves However, while a politically-guided agency needs more tests—and probably more tests after that—to make a public statement regarding the health effects of the chemical, some people don't need tests to be sure what those effects are.
People like Viviana Peralta in San Jorge, Argentina. Peralta's baby daughter suffers acute asthma attacks every time a crop duster sprays herbicides and pesticides near her house, which sits in an agriculture-rich province 600 kilometers from Buenos Aires.
A Le Monde story tells of Peralta's experiences, saying that she eventually made the connection between her daughter's asthma attacks and the chemical sprayings—a suspicion that a pediatrician would later confirm. Glyphosate was found present in Ailen's blood.
Le Monde reports more about the town of San Jorge:
Quote:
In San Jorge, cancer rates have spiked 30% in the past 10 years. Residents say that following a crop dusting, their lips turn blue and their tongues swell. Chickens die. Dogs and cats shed their hair. Bees disappear and birds become scarce.
And, the story continues, San Jorge is not alone:
Quote:
In the province of Chaco, which borders Paraguay, a study carried out over the past 10 years in a town called La Leonesa suggests that cancer rates have tripled while the incidence of malformations has quadrupled. The situation has created tensions between residents and rice farmers, who use glyphosate and spray from airplanes...
Andres Carrasco, an embryologist from the University of Buenos Aires, published a study in late 2010 demonstrating the toxic effects glyphosate can have on amphibian embryos. His work has earned him no shortage of enemies. He was physically attacked on a visit to La Leonesa and the conference he was scheduled to give there was canceled.
Carrasco is quoted saying he hasn't even made any new discoveries. "I just confirmed what other scientists had already discovered. The scientific evidence is there. Above all, there are the hundreds of [ill and malformed] people who are the living proof of this health emergency."
Apparently, though, that scientific evidence is not enough for the U.S. Geological Survey Office, or any other federal government agency, to show much concern about the effects of glyphosate on public health, despite finding it in every water sample tested.
(To be clear, the EPA is reviewing the chemical, but more than 30 years into its use and with a deadline for a decision still years away, it's not exactly treating it with any urgency.)

Yep, but they bamboozled the people who wrote the legislation that governs this shit and it appears the courts are in their pockets too. Farmers who show up with Monsanto genetics in the crops should be suing Monsanto for trespassing. Monsanto made farm crop genetics property and their cash cow is straying onto others property and the courts are coddling Monsanto.
Quote:
Under U.S. patent law, a farmer commits an offense even if they unknowingly plant Monsanto's seeds without purchasing them from the company. Other countries have similar laws.
In the well-known case of Canadian farmer Percy Schmeiser, pollen from a neighbour's GE canola fields and seeds that blew off trucks on their way to a processing plant ended up contaminating his fields with Monsanto's genetics.
The trial court ruled that no matter how the GE plants got there, Schmeiser had infringed on Monsanto's legal rights when he harvested and sold his crop. After a six-year legal battle, Canada's Supreme Court ruled that while Schmeiser had technically infringed on Monsanto's patent, he did not have to pay any penalties.
Schmeiser, who spoke at last year's World Social Forum in India, says it cost 400,000 dollars to defend himself.
"Monsanto should held legally responsible for the contamination," he said.
Another North Dakota farmer, Tom Wiley, explains the situation this way: "Farmers are being sued for having GMOs on their property that they did not buy, do not want, will not use and cannot sell."
"It's a corporation out of control," says Andrew Kimbrell, the executive director of CFS.

I haven't watched the documentary posted, but I know exactly what it's all about.
US law needs to change to disallow the patenting of dna. Plain and simple. To give any company a exclusive rights to dna is ridiculous, even if it is bio-engineered by them.
To the naysayers, this is what it's about. Mansato sues farmers that use their patented soy bean crop without paying them for it. The kicker is that this soy bean crop that they bio-engineered has pollen like any other plant, pollen that then sexually reproduces with crops that don't have the mansato patented reproduction gene. Mansato reps go around the country finding any farmer who doesn't pay them for their soy bean crop and them tries (often successfully) to put them out of business for not using it. It's genetic monopoly and needs to be stopped.

it seems more of a thread for hippies to get riled up about a movement.
Which is why it seems more appropriate for the Political Forum.
Not much talk about cooking and brewing and what not.

Yeah but you're not really talking about the art of gardening or things you've planted and cooked.
This thread's just about policy more than anything. Hence it's a political thread.

Yeah I hear ya
I think the biggest disaster in this situation (the original thread subject) is how it affects artisan cheese makers.
In America there's been a strong cheese rennaissance, moving to grassfed milk cows for cheese, which produces a far superior product than grain/corn fed beef.
But now there's this ongoing push to outlaw raw milks cheeses, and essentially bullying over artisan cheesemakers in favor for large corporate farms.
It's a damn shame.
The same can be said about grassfed beef vs cornfed beef. The comparison in quality is substantial.
(see how i changed the thread discussion to be more food related?)

Timeline of FDA raids against farmers, health clinics and dietary supplement providers - 1985, July 7. FDA agents raid the Burzynski Research Clinic (Texas), steal 200,000 medical and research documents, and force Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski to pay for copies to be made of them. No official charges are ever filed by the FDA (http://www.myopia.org/fdaraids.htm).
- 1987, February 26. Twenty-five armed FDA agents and US Marshals storm offices of the Life Extension Foundation (Florida), terrorize employees and seize thousands of nutritional products, materials, computers, files, and newsletters. Eighty percent of seized items are later determined not to even have been on the warrant (http://www.naturalnews.com/021791.html).
- 1988, November. FDA agents raid Traco Labs (Illinois), seize several drums of black currant oil as well as many containers of encapsulated product. The FDA claims the capsules the oil was being put into are an "unapproved food additive" (http://www.drpasswater.com/nutritio...).

I mean the raw food movement is also a bit fraudulent in itself.
The health benefits they claim for the most part are pretty much quackery. You should check out the raw food store and see the kind of crap they sell in claims that they "detoxify" your body. Black Mica mineral water for $200 a bottle. Shower heads that supposedly turn water into a body-purifying magical essence.
What's funny is these people will be the first to blur the lines between raw foods and natural organic foods in an attempt to bring more credibility to their enterprises.

hey city boy....you dont feed a cow on corn- you finish them on it. If you feed a cow on nothing but straight corn for more than 90 days they tend to keel over and die.
you should see how many cows eat loaves of stale bread, or silage in the winter. especially when hay is sky high in price.

I think the biggest disaster in this situation (the original thread subject) is how it affects artisan cheese makers.
i respect you for having kept an open mind through this thread, but cheese is hardly the biggest looser. you can go on netflix right now and find 2 movies on demand:
one is called "Colony" the other is "Vanishing of the bees"
When you look at the impacts of any ecological process, never focus on products that we, ourselves, indulge in first. There are Millions of variables that must be Carefully kept in line before we can even Begin to indulge in the fruits of the world we live in. and bee's are the lifeblood seasonal production! ( No bee's - We's FUCKED )
BYC, i LOVE how up to snuff you are on this shit! i've seen all those movies and everything netflix has on water, fuel, etc. This definitely belongs in this forum. several of those movies detail Several successions of ppl who worked at monsanto and other companies, who are now writing the laws that let's them do what they do. Keep your voice up!

The Corporation: Since the late 18th century American legal decision that the business corporation organizational model is legally a person, it has become a dominant economic, political and social force around the globe. This film takes an in-depth psychological examination of the organization model through various case studies. What the study illustrates is that in the its behaviour, this type of "person" typically acts like a dangerously destructive psychopath without conscience. Furthermore, we see the profound threat this psychopath has for our world and our future, but also how the people with courage, intelligence and determination can do to stop it.

Fuck Monsanto, the patenting of life, contamination of non-GMO plants, monocultures, the false promise that their GMOs increase yields or are more environmentally friendly, poisons built into plants, antibiotic markers, "substantial equivalency", the pillaging of small farms, the revolving doors in politics, synthetic biocides, subsidies for the unsustainable production of food, undercutting foreign agricultural markets with government-subsidized/cheap crops, the lawsuits against innocent farmers caught in the crossfire, the lack of labeling, the allowance of false advertising, and on and on!
Monsanto is NOT solving world hunger or providing any benefit except the lining of their own pockets. If we wanted to solve world hunger we could simply not feed as many animals the edible crops that are grown. They profiteer off the labor of poorly compensated farmers, government subsidies, and sidestepping regulation through cronyism and bribery.
I'm not forever 100% against genetically modifying things but the truth is humans have not mastered an understanding about how genetics work and calling these first generation GMOs "substantially equivalent" to traditional breeding techniques is utter nonsense. At least there are some GMO projects that have a noble intent behind them. "Golden Rice" seems well-intentioned at least since it is modified to have more beta-carotene which is a precursor to vitamin A which can be a common dietary deficiency in some parts of the world. Still, it's irresponsible to unleash these kinds of things into the world without significant testing and overwhelming understanding of what we're doing.
Here's a list of at least some of the companies that buy seed from Monsanto in the USA and Canada http://us.seminis.com/products/hg_dealer.asp?/

much of what you're ranting about is government and ultimately you, you need to deal with your elected officials, remove those that continue to stupport the status quo. it just as with GMO crops, you have the choice not to buy the products. the more people that know and dont buy the weaker these companies become

Putting the onus so heavily on the individual is not right. I do what I can on the individual level but corporations rule this place. There's also very little distinction between corporations and the government with all the revolving doors not the least in Monsanto's case. To me it's just a system of valuing money over nature, health, ethics, safety, or democracy. Buying into that system is a trap.

That's the problem... there has been growing demand from the public that GMO's be labeled as such, but of course they have flexed their muscles in preventing that from becoming a requirement for their food products. If you look at one of my first posts in this thread, there has been many rallies!!!! The consumer, for the most part, don't know when they go to the market if they're buying GMO or not b/c it's not required by law to be labeled as such.

is it not your choice to buy the products you know use stuff you dont approve of? is it also not your right to petition the government on your grievances

growing demand, if .001% of the public is complaining about GMO grains in breakfast cereals and that number increases to .02% but only the original .001% is actually contacting their elected reps to step in and start with conspicuous product labeling then has that demand actually increased. the problem with most of those that want to see this sort of legislation is that they dont speak up, instead they take the alarmist yet inactive approach of only telling people and often times they're misinforming those they do tell. why not take a proactive approach and contact companies that dont use the GMO products and ask them why they arent labeling their stuff as GMO free. the milk I buy is free of rBST/rBGH and is labeled as such in order to generate the added sales without having to spend a fuckton on 'organic' which is yet another con from the government

dont waste you time with petitions, they're great for letting people feel as though they're doing something but they're typically ignored unless it's a petition to get a republican governor out of office in wisconsin

you know, sometimes things have to be said ( OR HEARD ) time after time after time before you get that "Ah-HA!" or "Oh YEAH!" moment. and it's just as true with me.
Quote:

to give you a better analogy, we talk to our supermarket guys fairly often askin about fresh produce and varieties etc. the guy told us once, "if there's Ever Anything you guys want, Please say something! we know that if we get 10 ppl to ask about it, there are at Least a hundred more thinking about it."
Quote:

Guilty As Charged! I'm gonna put that in my pipe and smoke it for a while. it's certainly not a complete solution but it's a piece of the puzzle, and was my " oh yeah . . stoopid!" moment so really what we need are 100 ppl calling legislators a day!
anyways, i've gotta get to work - i was trying to remember the name of the movie i just watched on netflix about golden rice. that's another gross fallacy. i don't think it had anything to do with well intentioned business. if i recall it was something closer to those areas having no interest in foreign seed of Any kind. practically at the govt lvl. and the extra vitamin a or whatever was the shim to get under the fence. once their in their in. and they destroy economies, families and lives. it's india all over again.

Tuesday, February 14,2012 Monsanto Found Guilty of Chemical Poisoning in France
A French court has found U.S. chemical giant Monsanto Co. guilty of pesticide poisoning in the case of a French farmer who became ill after exposure to one of the company’s herbicides, according to Reuters. The case is significant in that it sets precedent for other cases alleging pesticide poisoning or negligence in reporting of potential effects on human health resulting from pesticides. The court has said it will seek an expert opinion regarding the farmer’s losses in order to determine the appropriate amount of damages he should be rewarded.

i'm Startin to want some Swank ass AMU sigs . .. but i digress . .
Shrooms are you saying that those companies/labels are owned outright by monsanto ( cause i'd be interested to learn that monsanto is a parent-head of other companies ( or whatever you call the boss's boss )) or that they have been ( are are now ) known to use g.m.o.'s in their feedstock.
we all know that kraft/fill-us-more-us does every chance they can. and just about anything that has a corn derivative is g.m.o. but i haven't heard about wheat or things like cane sugar, beets and potatoes.
does anyone have a list of "products" (read:plants) that haven't been altered on the Monsanto scale ? ( i just learned that my gf's computer apparently knows that monsanto should be capitalized >.< )

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-03-09/monsanto-dow-modified-crops-to-get-expedited-reviews-by-u-s-.html
tldr; glyphosphate no longer works. We need some plants that survive agent orange, and we need them now.
Quote:
The move to speed biotech approvals comes as seed-makers develop new technologies aimed at slowing the spread of so- called superweeds that are no longer killed by Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide. Half of the 12 plants designated for faster review by the USDA are herbicide-tolerant crops made by Monsanto, Dow, DuPont Co., Bayer AG (BAYN) and BASF AG.
[...]
Dow soybeans engineered to tolerate applications of three herbicides, including 2,4-D, fall under the new system, while earlier petitions for approval of soybeans that tolerate 2,4-D and one other herbicide and for 2,4-D-tolerant corn remain under the old paradigm. Dow is counting on at least $1 billion of profit from 2,4-D and crops that tolerate it, known as the Enlist system, as farmers try to control superweeds.
Crops engineered to tolerate 2,4-D have come under attack by activists partly because the chemical is one of the two herbicides comprising Agent Orange. Dow’s Resler-Friend said it was 2,4,5-T, the other chemical in the defoliant used during the Vietnam war, that was a health concern and it hasn’t been produced in 25 years.

I feel evil!! My father worked for both GD Searle and Monsanto.. My mother receives a widow's pension cheque from them every month.
My father worked in direct partnership with the guy who invented glyphosate (I won't give his name, too many psychos out there, plus you can find it if you look, he has a view of Central Park now...) I've met him many times, he's a really nice guy actually, long time family friend.
In fact both my father and the creator of glyphosate were thoroughly kind, decent human beings. I get annoyed when people tar the entire corporation with the same brush. All studies done at the time indicated glyphosate was safe to humans and animals.
Not in any way defending the wider practices of Monsanto, just pointing out that the individiuals are 99% working because they get a grant and can actually do research they are interested in, not to fuck over the world and put farmers out of business.

I'm not saying that at all! I do realize that there are scientists w/ geniune interests and good intentions, that's not where the problem lies... it's the corporate machine that is Monsanto that is only concerned w/ one thing... profit; and will do anything to achieve/boost said profits. Even if it means endangering the population b/c they didn't want to invest the proper time and money into their due diligence before unleashing it on the public or even worse... they didn't care. Many scientist in the pursuit of their research and expansion of knowledge have inadvertently developed dangerous technology that have been abused by the powers that be which was never their intention... look at the atom bomb! There is nothing wrong w/ research... but it is another thing entirely when it is used on the public and in the case of the Monsanto FORCED onto the public unknowingly or against their will!!! Furthermore, continuing to do so when it is now apparent that it is NOT "safe" for animals, humans, or the environment is just plain disgusting... greed and power rearing its ugly head!

I hate that I used the word "invented" in regards to glyphosate creator, ugly language on my behalf, really irks me..
I wasn't intimating that you or anyone in particular was saying that all research scientists were evil and out to destroy the world, particularly good God-fearin' folk..
It's just that it's a common misconception, espcially in the media, that all employees are somehow colluding in a scheme of world domination.
I think we agree that there is a marked difference between the research aspect, and "marketing" and business side of the company and it's subsidiaries and parent companies.
Unfortunately if you are a research PhD and get offered a postion with what has essentially unlimited funding depending on your results, it's very hard to turn down. I used to enjoy going and wandering around the labs at Monsanto world HQ in ST. Louis, would sometimes go to work with my dad for a couple of hours at the weekends.
All the people I know who worked there were really nice, although most of them weren't from the US.. Lots of Belgians..
(sorry I'm a little high and not posting too well today...)

The Future of Food: THE FUTURE OF FOOD offers an in-depth investigation into the disturbing truth behind the unlabeled, patented, genetically engineered foods that have quietly filled U.S. grocery store shelves for the past decade. From the prairies of Saskatchewan, Canada to the fields of Oaxaca, Mexico, this film gives a voice to farmers whose lives and livelihoods have been negatively impacted by this new technology. The health implications, government policies and push towards globalization are all part of the reason why many people are alarmed about the introduction of genetically altered crops into our food supply. Shot on location in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, The Future of Food examines the complex web of market and political forces that are changing what we eat as huge multinational corporations seek to control the world's food system. The film also explores alternatives to large-scale industrial agriculture, placing organic and sustainable agriculture as real solutions to the farm crisis today. The Future of Food reveals that there is a revolution going on in the farm fields and on the dinner tables of America, a revolution that is transforming the very nature of the food we eat.

Farmageddon - Farmageddon is the story of a mom whose son healed from all allergies and asthma after consuming raw milk, and real food from farms. It depicts people all over the country who formed food co-ops and private clubs to get these foods, and how they were raided by state and local governments.
