So I just started watching this really interesting documentary on The Mamas and The Papas called Straight Shooter that I got from Netflix. I paused it so that I could tell you about a story that John Phillips told about their early days of taking LSD. Before they were famous, they all took a trip to the Virgin Islands. One day Cass Elliot showed up with, get this, a QUART of liquid LSD that they tripped off of for a couple of months. They wrote some of their early hits during that period.
Anyone want to do the math on how many micrograms a quart of acid is?

If my math is correct that's almost 1 million micrograms if 1 micron = 1 microgram (weight of liquid water)

My math put it at 9 and a half million hits at 100 ug's a hit. But that was for the liquid weight of water as well, not of LSD.

Yeah, it could have been diluted at any level though. So it's really up in the air.

Ok you guys are wayyyy too giddy. Cool story by the way but everyones calculations are a little off in my opinion..
Here's my break down
Lets use a sweetbreath mint squeeze bottle (vial) for reference. Such a bottle is typically 3.7 mL big.
Let's now assume that the vial contains 100 hits of LSD. Fair enough right? That's what most people expect I'm assuming when buying a vial.
so now on to the QUART OF LSD.
One quart is equivalent to 32 fluid ounces, which is roughly 1 liter or 1000 mL.
1000 mL of volume divided by 3.7 mL per vial equals 270.27 vials worth of liquid in a quart (or 1000 mL or 1 L)
Damn lets just round it up to 275 because the shit was potent in those days.
275 vials X 100 hits per vial = 27500 hits!
woah thats a lot
at 100 micrograms a hit thats 2,750,000 micrograms
at 200 micrograms a hit thats 5,500,000 micrograms
damn either way, i guess you all aren't that far off after all that math, but wow ocelot of LSD

damn, are vials really 15 mL? maybe i've been seeing small ones all along. I got the 3.7 mL size right off a sweetbreath squeeze bottle but have no idea if one actually would hold 100 drops

They vary but 15ml is standard in most places as far as I know. Could be more or less depending on the container. I've seen grams of LSD diluted and sold in listerine bottles.

Fair enough, but those vials with the droppers that pop up in the recent blotter thread are definitely 1 dram vials.. 1 dram = 3.7 mL, dude's are getting ripped off? I'm curious, not really trying to argue, just curious because my whole perceptions of the acid game could potentially be thrown off here..
ok actually so, before I post and then go back and edit I just found this on answers.com
1 drop = 1 minim (ap) = 1/60th fluid dram
1 dram (liq - US) = 1/8 fl oz = 0.226 cubic inch = 3.697 ml = 1 tsp
60 drops (minims) = 1 fluid dram (ap) = 1 tsp
so yeah i guess those fancy glass vials with the droppers are probably closer to 50-60 hits
anyways feel free to add or clarify any information.. it's about learning

You're probably right. Most of the vials I see around are bigger than the sweet breath bottles so whoever dilutes them does the math.

I just finished watching the extras on the DVD. Interesting stories. John Phillips says that he and Denny were taking "handfuls of LSD" and eventually stopped eating anything but rice and whatnot and that they looked close to death? They were always seeing things that weren't there and stuff. They went to the doctor who asked them what type of drug they were using. They told him that it was LSD. The doctor took them to the psych ward and showed them people who had gone crazy on psychedelics. Then the doctor asked them how often they were taking LSD. They said "Well, everyday." They somehow got the impression that all of the musicians and talented young people in LA were taking acid every single day, so they started doing it. Everyday.

Nah she's still hot.
A quart of LSD is too vague to derive any conclusive answers IMO, since we can't know the potency of what was available at the time. We can only guess but let's assume it a whole lot and that TM&TP were typical musicians of the '60s.

I think it's possible. There were four of them and if they were taking it every day for months, their tolerance got higher and higher and higher. And you can assume that they must have shared some with other people. As far as the potency, we're talking about 1965 here. So they either had Sandoz or Owsley LSD most likely. I don't know of any other acid chemists at that time. And I can't say for sure, I have a feeling that no one was cutting or diluting LSD in 1965. It must have been pure.

Why wouldn't you want to dilute acid. I sure as heck would. It would allow a lot more wiggle room on the dosage.
My vote--informed by nothing more than intuition--is that their quart was weaker than what we're used to with 50-100 microgram drops.

yeah, I'd want it diluted a bit. I don't understand the major fanaticism in dealing with PURE lsd. I don't want to pay $20 for water either. but in all reality I don't want to put a drop equal to a grain of sand, on my tongue, and trip for a week straight. it just doesn't sound fun. a QUART of lsd?
well, it sounds maybe just a little intense?

My friend claims he saw a 5 gallon bucket of LSD when he was dealing it

Im assuming this wasnt a quart of crystal L but some liquid suspension, maybe a quart of rum (since they were in that sorta area) that had a crystal dissolved in it.

Yeah they mention that mama cass brought a vial of sandoz lsd-25 down to the beach with her and they lived off it and an american express card for several weeks, among much else. Cool little tid bit on the history of the band
