Homesteading
    #15000777 - 08/30/11 10:28 AM (1 year, 8 months ago)

Have you considered it? I'm really thinking about doing this in Alaska or somewhere in the Pacific NW region. I'm so sick of the grid, and demeaning myself by being on a payroll.

This way of life just isn't for me..it's time for a change.

Everyone on the planet should be homesteading. We would then stop taking advantage of everything given to us and be much more thankful. Also, money would not be as important and therefore people with materialistic personalities would cease to exist.

As for me... I'm 22 right now but when I get a nice home after university I plan on being very self-sufficient. :yesnod:

There are many places around the world where you can do this. You can go to South America or even Australia. The Australian government will even let you extend your visa/holiday if you do farm work because they struggle to find workers when the mining industry pays so well.

I was actually just reading about this in the book 'Hide Your A$$ets and Disappear. Step-by-step guide to disappearing without a trace'

I was actually thinking of this too. I just read about a guy that marooned himself on an island for years only returning to civilization when he was deathly ill.

I often go over a month at a time without ever leaving my property.  In the 100 square miles around our cabin, there's only ten people, and that's about to drop to 4 people as soon as winter settles in.

It's not a homestead now, but definitely started out that way 50 years ago.  We have a ten mile gravel road down the canyon for when we need to get out.  Regular cars can even drive here during the summer months.

We survive by trading mushrooms to the ranchers and farmers for beef and other food.  We rarely buy anything but flour and sugar, whiskey, etc.

Oh wow. I dream of a place like that one day. Right now I look out my window and see an abandoned car.

that is a great place there RR. you can homestead in the city.  we live in a big city but our home is like a homestead. we grow what we eat and we eat what we grow. in the summer we are able to grow 90% of our food in the winter it drop down to 75-80%.  it's alot of work but if you enjoy it, it is not hard at all.

homesteading does not equal sustainability, nor does it mean living organisms and ecosystems won't continue to be exploited

that is a far step in logic.  those personalities will never cease to exist; not in our species or others

I agree that my conclusions are way too generalized but I believe it would significantly reduce those impacts.

Self sustainability is my ultimate dream. I too go for long periods w/o leaving my property. I have come to the point where I almost hate town. I am slowly working toward my ultimate goal, and can say the biggest mistake anyone who wishes to do this is to procrastinate in getting started. No path in life is easy, but none are so rewarding as homesteading. IMHO.

RR, love the homestead pics....and the barter system. Reminds me of a simpler time.
