HICKMAN COUNTY, TN (WSMV). It's considered to be the largest bust in Hickman County in 50 years. A barn was being used as a still to make hundreds of gallons of moonshine.
The sheriff received a tip and raided a barn Thursday night near the Toddy's Bend area. There, officials discovered 1,000 jugs of illegal liquor.
Wilson Rochelle is accused of making it and bringing it to Nashville to sell. Authorities think he's been doing this for some time, and they say the economy is the biggest reason.
Sheriff Randall Ward tells Channel 4 the moonshine they found has a street value of $50,000.
Rochelle was convicted for making moonshine 40 years ago.
Charges are pending in this moonshine discovery until the grand jury hears the case.

$50,000 for 1000 jugs is $50 per jug which I assume is a gallon. Seems pricey for moonshine.

Moonshine fresh out of the still is 90+ percent.

Moonshine is not usually 90% ABV. It's more in the 50-68% range depending on the stiller.
$50 a gallon is a pretty standard price for decent moonshine from grain. A gallon is 5 fifths and I can't buy a fifth of even cheap rotgut 40% ABV vodka (the kind that comes in plastic bottles) for less than 5.70 with tax. That makes moonshine almost twice as expensive by volume, but moonshine is at least 50% ABV, has some flavor, and doesn't taste so terrible I can't drink it. Oh and you get a cool glass bottle or 4 mason jars depending on the market.
Weirder moonshine like pure fruit shine and the sotol you can buy in S.W. Texas can go for $100+/gal easily.

I said fresh out of the still. Any alcohol can be refined to 90+%

You can't easily obtain 90% from a pot still. Large scale moonshine is rarely produced using a reflux still due to a much greater cost in equipment for little return. Hence most moonshine is not 90% fresh out of the still. Maybe 75-80% tops on a second run.

My particular still has valves that can be adjusted so that it functions like a pot still, or a reflux still (giving me anywhere from 50% to 95% ABV depending where I set the valves). My boiler is a beer keg, but my design could be scaled up to produce the kind of volume it takes to stock up 1000 gallons; the extra cost of making a versatile still like mine would be well worth the effort. Really, it's a matter of extra know-how, not extra cost, as the extra cost is quickly erased by the profit margins of selling shine at $50 / gallon (which sounds totally reasonable to me -- where I live, in Canada, a fifth of a gallon goes for no less than $20, so $50 is half of liquor store prices.
And the shine I make compares very well to commercially available liquor -- better than much of it! Of course, I make it quietly for home consumption only, never to sell.

That's what I'd like to do. Get me a small home still and run a little batch off now and then.

Pretty simple technology.

What's wrong with selling illegal liquor? He's just beating out the national/international competition. Assuming he's not in a "dry" county... in which case he's simply taking advantage of a job opening.
