Psilocybe Subaeruginosa, Outdoor Cultivation............. * 6
    #14553921 - 06/03/11 01:15 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hello,
I roughly followed a woodlovers tec that I found on here last year.
It worked for me!!!!! Had 3 come up so far.
Its early days yet, only been cold enough for a week or two.
I live about 75mins from Perth in Western Australia.
From what I can find out the ones I've been collecting down south for a number of years are Psilocybe subaeruginosa.
Wondering is there anyone in the Avon Valley or around Perth that has had similar success cultivating their own?
Sorry photos did'nt work, I'll try and work out how to do it.
The avatar photo is one of the ones I've just grown.

You might want to contribute your methods, notes, and/or pictures to one of the following links. There are plenty of people who are interested in expanding wood-lovers, and I'm sure you have some insight on how to pull it off now that you have proven successful!

Thanks for your reply Ryath.
From what I've read of your posts you sure know what your doing.
I would like to contribute to the links you supplied.
Not very technology orientated and am having trouble working out how to post photos.

Would be really gratefull if someone could reply with the steps to adding photos to a post in 'easy terms'. I have managed to upload pictures to 'Pics' but can't get them onto a post.

No problem! I'm always glad to see fungus expansion! :hehehe:

Now that pictures are uploaded, click on the "pics" link near the top of the page. This should open a new window or tab where you can view all of the images you have stored on the site (thank you shroomery :bow2:). From there, you can click on the white box with text in it associated with each image, which copies the image location. Then you go back to the window or tab you want to post that picture in and right click, then click paste or you can hold control and push "v." (or the apple icon + "v" if you are on a mac) which is the key-command for pasting (ctrl+c for copy).

Alternatively, you can check the boxes of each image you want to copy if you want to mass-post pictures. After you checked all the ones you want to post, go to the bottom of the page and click "copy code." This expands a big white box of text full of multiple image locations. Click on this like you would a single image white box and paste in the same manner.

I hope that is clear enough to consider "easy terms." Let us know if you still can't get it and I'm sure we can describe it differently until you figure it out.

Lots more pins in the tub thats fruiting.

Misting them lots as its quite dry, not much rain.

Looks like things may be starting in the other 2 tubs.

Been reading lots of really good info in some of the threads, Shroomery is great!

All are fully open now.

Am about to start a number of new tubs with sub stems.
Have recently been hunting and have lots of stems between wet cardboard.
Got some Red Gum chips and some Pine.
Also going to try Hay(straw) and Cardboard on its own.

Of the tubs I made last year 1 is fruiting out of 3.
Its the tub with the most wood chips/soil.
Emptied a third of a bag of potting mix in it after xmas.
All of the tubs had lots of cardboard.
There have been 16 up so far in the fruiting tub.
2 new pins in the last few days.
Having some subs come up has inspired me.
Thanks for all the excellent advice on Shroomery.
:bow2:  :bow2:  :bow2:  :bow2:  :bow2:  :bow2:

Recently been back to the South West of Western Australia and acquired a number of new Subs. :mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2:
Was good pickings, more than I’ve seen for a few years.
Seems to be a good season for them.
Placed stems and buts between moist cardboard in plastic containers.
Half filled one container with only stems and buts, no cardboard.
Kept them in the dark for 2 weeks.

 Was pleased to see the mycelium growth on the cardboard.

Materials for new tubs.

Redgum chips, Pine shavings, Jarrah bark, Pine mulch, Straw, Cardboard, Potting mix, 2 hollow Wandoo logs.
15 Tubs, 5 Pots.

Combinations of materials were mixed -

Evenly spread the mycelium between all the containers, covered with 2 - 4 inches, all containers have drainage holes.

Made up these pots as well.

Wanted to try some logs to see if the mycelium will infest them.

Nursery

Trying to cultivate more mycelium in a few different mediums
Straw, Pine shavings, Redgum chips.

These are now in a dark place.
Planning on letting them go until their full of mycelium.
If good, am then going to try a very basic inside fruiting tech.

:mushroom2: An update on my Sub tubs. :mushroom2:

It has been raining heaps.

The 3 tubs from last year,
Tub 1, The tub that fruited - No second blush yet.
Tub 2, Has 2 pins that have stayed the same size for 2 weeks.
Seems as if there dormant?
Tub 3, Has lots of mycelium but no pins.

Tubs from this year
All look like the mycelium is continuing to colonize the cardboard its on and is making it's way into surrounding substrate.
Seems to be colonizing the tubs with potting mix and pine shavings the quickest.
Have covered each of this years tubs half with cardboard to see if it will encourage the mycelium to infest sooner.

This is a container of wet Redgum chips that I put some stems in, its 1 month old.
It lived in a dark spot in a cold room for two weeks.
It wasn't doing much so I moved it and all my other inside container experiments in close vicinity to a wood burning stove.
The stove is on for 10 hours a day and heats the surrounding area nicely.
Its been in the dark and warmth for two weeks with good results.

  :amanita2:

In this container are the stems from my last hunt, in between wet cardboard they went.
These have been in the container for only 9 days in the dark and warmth and the mycelium has grown through the cardboard already.

Am hoping the container completely colonizes so I can break it up and make more containers.
Would like to get some outdoor beds going at home and also colonize a few local areas.

  :amanita2:

I am thinking of stems on Agar now, then maybe getting onto inoculating jars.

The last container (stems from last hunt) in the above post has me concerned.

The top 1-4 pieces of cardboard are drying out even though the container is sealed.
The mycelium is still growing strong even so.

I'm wondering if I carefully re-moisten the cardboard will the myc die or get knocked back?
and is there a chance that the myc will colonize all the cardboard and become a chunk,
or am I better off using it now for new tubs?

These are some substrates I'm trying

Soaking in rainwater.

Crushed Gumnuts, Roo poo, Casurina seedpods,
crushed pinecones, Dyed woodchips,
Xanthorea, Pine bark, Wandoo bark.

All have sub mycelium on cardboard in them.
I'm storing them in the dark and warmth to encourage faster growth.

An update on one of my outside tubs.

Have covered most of the tubs half with cardboard to promote moisture retention.
As suggested by Austrip:thumbup:

Checked on some of them today and was pleased to see that most of the myc has taken to the substrates.
Will post a full report soon.

Tub half covered in cardboard

What seems the quickest is the Pine mulch from Balingup mixed with potting mix
This tub was started 2 months ago with sub myc on cardboard

A close up of the luvly stuff:fonda:

:cookiemonster:

The myc seems to really like the Pine mulch, it was decomposing when I collected it.

Theres some green moss or mould thats growing on the pine mulch.
Though only on the surface and mostly on the uncovered side.
The sub mycelium seems not to mind.:mushroom2:
