NJ Psilocybe Caerulipes
    #14937258 - 08/17/11 01:16 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

... im assuming anyway, unless you guys think otherwise... its an active psilocybe non the less.  Far north NJ, about 10 feet from a large stream in a mostly hemlock forest, growing from leaf litter.  Been hunting these woods for 5+ years now as it is my prime chant and black trumpet spot... first time i stumbled onto this... 6in of rain is a good thing.  Sorry for shitty pictures

There's plenty of bluing in the last pic.

Its purple-brown... the first sign of bluing was the cap margin when i pealed the pellicle, very slight took a while but became more apparent after about 15min to an hour, and is more apparent as they are drying... I am sure its a psilocybe its just wheather its caerulipes or not... seems to fit to me, dont know what else it would be

Looks like caerulipes to me. I also found my first one in my black trumpet patch. That means beech is there and is what caerulipes is usually associated with. It often mixes with hemlock.

Nice finds, Roy!

Thanks... while yes most of my trumpet finds come around beech trees, they are few and far between there.  90% mature hemlock with a mix of red and sugar maple, white pine, yellow birch and black tupelo, occational oak hickory and beech.  The closest hardwood to this find would have been a mid aged sugar maple.. many of them were growing from maple leafs... pic is not exact location but general area

Cool. I've read that caerulipes is also an associate of maple. I know from experince the it grows from birch occasionally. Mr. Mushrooms said he found caerulipes under hemlock as well. Honestly, I never really believe him and thought that there must have been beech nearby, but your observations kinda confirms what he said. Obviously there's more to the story than just saying, "grows on beech".

Indeed, it seems to me that they just like northern hardwood species.. ie birch beech maple and hemlock, though i do doubt that they would grow directly from hemlock wood more so hardwoods in hemlock forests, but who knows.  The more we find the more we know.

As for the stem, it is not brittle at all, quite flexible

So I went back today to actually look for them and scope things out.  Listening to what you said Bob i went looking for beech trees.  Now this forest is like i said mostly hemlock and in total i saw 4 live beech trees (not counting sapplings) but what i never realized is there where dozens of old decaying beeches... a disease or parasite must have blown through the area a long time ago and completely wiped out the beeches... they were all dead and their debris litters the ground.  And sure enough just about every one had these growing around them... it got to a point were i was supprised if an old beech didnt have them.. i went to the original spot (which is in a wash out area) and sure enough there was an old beech branch amongst the debris.  Its amazing actually, maybe they are purley linked to beeches in some way.  I still cant believe i never noticed these in the past though considering how much time i spend there, granted i never actual was looking for them.  Im starting to wonder how rare these actually are or if they are just hard to spot... they are quite tiny.

Good investigative work Roy. And nice photos too! You should post a few in the "Official Caerulipes" thread.

Others find them the way you did. I've expanded my search and still cant seem to find more growing abundantly as you did. I'm still stuck on the same little flood plain I first found them on.

You have it in a nutshell there....they're small. And close in color to beech leaves that litter the ground where I find them. Very easy to overlook if you're not searching for them.

Good work!:handth:

Thanks Bob, yea I was supprised how abundant they were.  The hemlocks made things easy, since the forest is wide open, the beeches are easy to spot from a distance.  So i just popped around from one to another.

No, to me it does not look like a caerulipes. Gill shots would be nice but personally I think it's either a mycena or a psathyrella species.
