I'm not a big car camper, but there's just so many options.
Beaches like San Clemente are really awesome for car camping. There's some spots I saw in Los Padres National Forest too... lots of small and secluded sites at the end of the dirt roads out there. Joshua Tree's got really cool car camping but a bit of a drive.
I know there's some car camping spots in Anza Borrego near the mud caves. You might check them out...
Heard mixed reviews of Caspers Wilderness Park. I'm not a big fan of the wilderness down there anyway since there is horse shit everywhere. (That includes most of Cleveland National Forest IME too.)
Hopefully this helped somehow

duuuuude why you did not come with to los padres avec nous two weekends past?
I would suggest joshua tree definitely, although it's super hot right now (halloween!) national forests are always good spots to car camp. BLM land too. If you are down for a little recon, I would say just go out there and drive around when it's still light out, and investigate! i've found some really sick car spots at the end of two tracks that look like they might go nowhere.

just got back from idyllwild- i car camped.
it was pretty sweet, because we had two cars, so we went up and found our spot, claimed it by leaving one car there, and then drove back down into town and had pizza and beer and listened to cover band before driving back up to camp.
googlemap "south ridge trail idyllwild ca" and that's where you want to go. once the pavement ends, just look for some little turnouts that are nice and level and have space to park and set up a tent. I wouldn't recommend a campfire though, it's too brushy.
