Don't say we didnt warn you! Parkers are super aggressive, they are from India, the land where beards are beards and barbers are skilled.

I really do love my Parker...I can't imagine using anything less aggressive.

Are you pressing the razor, at all, against your face? That is no.1 for reasons I would get razor burn or nicks. When you have the razor at the right angle, with a sharp enough blade, you won't have to use any force to keep the blade on your skin. The mere force of cutting your whiskers will be enough to keep the blade against your face.

That was the big thing to learn, for me anyway. Switching from using a regular cartridge razor to a DE razor, it's hard to give up that automatic press-and-swipe motion. Now that I have learned how not to press, I can shave even with Feather blades - recognized as the sharpest blades you can buy - and not get a nick or burn.

You don't know what it is, but it's there....
Like a splinter in your mind...
Driving you mad.

Thats the truth, with a sharp blade (Derby Extra does it for me and i have whiskers like a toothbush) you basically slide the razor over your face and its a pass. Any pressure will give you issues.

Got the Parker 99R today and let me say this: Holy fuck! I never knew there would be such a difference between razors. At first when I tried shaving with it like my 34C it didn't cut the hairs even close to short enough. I used to use my 34C angled so that more of the guard hit my face. With the 99R I had to angle it so that the curved part in the middle of the blade was almost flush with my skin, the blade was at maybe a 30-45 degree angle.

Once I figured out the angle that it cuts the closest, the shave got a LOT closer than the 34C ever gave me. Also made me bleed a hell of a lot more. I love the heft of this razor, the twist-to-open barn door opening for blade changes/cleaning, and the length/design of the handle. The handle is about 4 inches long and has that old school 40's barber look to it (see pic Wiccan provided)... But damn, it's gonna take me about 3-4 shaves to get used to how aggressive it is and figure out the right angle to shave. I think I'm in for a world of hurt razor-burn wise after this first shave.

All in all, amazing razor, but it seems to have STEEP learning curve at the cost of your blood/skin. It'll take time to figure out the proper way to shave with this razor, but that's to be expected with any new DE safety razor.

thanks for that quick review

sounds like it might be a little too aggressive for me.

My friend just got the Merkur Model 180 (or 23C I'm pretty sure). He let me give it a run and it was really fun. I'm thinking about ordering one right now. I have razor, cream, brush, and blades in a shopping cart and I'm just waiting to pull the trigger. It's 60 bucks for all of it so I'm a little hesitant.

yeah, the initial investment is a bit daunting. but, once you make it you'll be using the same gear for years to come and save a shitload of money in the long run.

It's been in my shopping cart for about 3 days now. I really want to buy it but I just need a little encouragement to pull the trigger. I was rocking the beard for the past few months but I shaved it off (when my friend let me try his merkur). Now work told me to shave my stubble. I forgot that I need to shave everyday when I don't have a beard. I should probably just buy it.

The only problem is right now I have an electric razor that I don't need to spend any money on to keep it going so a new razor isn't a necessary purchase. Even though the electric one tears up my face I could keep work happy without spending any money. I really like the ritual and history behind the safety razor though.

Anybody care to provide me with a little encouragement?

My hair is a little thick, is that going to be any problems for the Merkur with Derby blades?

Does this method require a lot of fine motor control? I have essential tremors and I have to be careful with razor blades around my jugular.

Yeah it takes some reliable fine motor control to use them somewhat safely. I would recommend that you stick with a high end electric shaver for safety and peace of mind, especially if you have tremors of any sort. I would recommend a good electric shaver if I could but I use a good old fashion straight razor.

Where :wtf:

I've switched to a single edge safety razor and love it but cannot find blades for it anywhere since I ran out a couple days ago.
As I look for a Parker 99R all I'm seeing are blades at like $1 a piece.
Am I missing something here?

This is urgent I'm not going out to buy disposables!

On the shaving forums mentioned earlier theres people entrepeneuring in them, they buy a whole box from Derby in Turkey and sell via PM's there right out of the box. The prices can be a very close shave to the factory price.

Its Derby Extra you want, all round the best blades for the money.

Here: 100 Derby Extra blades for $9,45 on eBay

how many shaves do you allow per blade (i could do the math but i'm not feeling it right now)? i allow about 4 to 5 shaves per blade and i've got some pretty coarse beard hair. i really enjoy these blades.

I shave every 2-4 days and I usually get about 3-4 shaves out of each razor. I also have very coarse hairs and the Derby Extra blades work perfectly.
