Preserving My Finds For Display! HELP!
    #14662977 - 06/24/11 01:23 AM (3 years, 1 month ago)

So as a beginner mycologist, its only natural to want to preserve your finds for a collection... how do i go about doing so with out messing up the fungus too bad? any suggestions on long-term display preserving?

I heard of someone doing some sort of freeze-drying method with several mushroom species, but have never seen it for myself.  The standard method for preservation is drying, but they typically shrivel up and do not look nice like they did fresh.  Freezing causes them to retain their structure (moisture), but they cannot be thawed or they will wilt.
So basically, there is no good way to preserve mushrooms in their fresh state.  Take a lot of great pictures, and dry the specimens for your herbarium and further research.

Thank u for the tip! starting a herbarium is fun, i just wanted to know if there was a way to be able to keep them semi-structured. i once heard of submerging them in liquid silicone.. the silicone replaces the H2O molecules and they just look rubbery after, but in their (almost) natural state. Never seen it done though

I've considered that, but never heard of the technique applied to plants or fungi.  It certainly wouldn't be easy or widely available.  At least not now.

I saw some plastinated fungi at Melbourne Musemum once. I didn't take a photo at the time but found this one on the net.

I think there is some sort of spray that harden's throughout the fungus to preserve it

But im not sure

I sent an enquiry to the BodyWorlds people.  You need Chapter 13 of the Heidelberg Folder:

Quote:

Dear Joe,

Thank you for your enquiry. The plastination technique can be applied for the preservation of mushrooms (as described in the “Heidelberg Plastination Folder”, chapter 13) and has been applied for this purpose earlier. However, I don’t have any information about labs where they do such work today.

If you are generally interested in plastination, it’s physics, chemistry and application in medical science and some other fields: The “Heidelberg Plastination Folder”, a collection of technical leaflets, is available at Biodur® Products, EUR 26.50 (engl. Version), www.biodur.de.

Best regards from Heidelberg
