Maple tree root and fungi symbiosis.

These were growing directly out of the roots of a live maple, the roots have been exposed to the surface by cows. These are extremely slow growing fungi, i have been monitoring them for 6 days and they have hardly changed.

Ganoderma species, possibly g. lucidum. These are not symbiotic btw, but sapotrophic on dead wood. Indeed, ganoderma species are sometimes incredibly slow to mature.

The roots are alive the tree is about 25' tall, the only thing that is dead that it could be feeding on is the extreme outer layer of the root bark.

Those look like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reishi Reishi/Lingzhi to me.  They are a good medicinal shroom.  I recommend to make some tea with them.

That mushroom is not a symbiote. It's a parasite.

Nah, it feeds off dead wood, so it's not really a parasite. It's a composter, essentially. I've often found ganoderma species growing like this, from dead wood inside a living piece of root or trunk. The dead wood is there. Trust me.
